The African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria has congratulated Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya, SAN, on her inauguration as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), describing her assumption of office as a significant moment for the legal profession and an important milestone for women in law.
The association had earlier congratulated Badejo-Okunsanya following her victory in the NBA elections. In a statement signed by its National President, Mrs. Caroline Ibharunefe, AWLA Nigeria said her formal inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter in her leadership of the association and presents an opportunity to advance reforms and strengthen the profession’s contribution to justice and society.
AWLA Nigeria said Badejo-Okunsanya’s emergence and assumption of office represent a source of pride for the Nigerian legal profession, particularly for women lawyers who have continued to seek greater representation and leadership opportunities within the profession.
“Your historic emergence is a moment of great pride for the Nigerian legal profession and, particularly, for women in the law. It is a testament to your excellence, dedication, courage and years of distinguished service,” the statement said.
The association said it looked forward to working with the new NBA administration in areas that align with its mandate, particularly the advancement of the rights and welfare of women and children, access to justice, strengthening the rule of law and creating greater opportunities for women in the legal profession.
“As an organisation committed to advancing the rights and welfare of women and children, promoting access to justice, strengthening the rule of law and empowering women in the legal profession, AWLA Nigeria looks forward to working with your administration in advancing these shared ideals,” it said.
The association also said Badejo-Okunsanya’s leadership would be closely watched by women lawyers and younger members of the profession, who see greater female representation in the leadership of the NBA as an important part of the profession’s evolution.
AWLA Nigeria expressed the hope that her tenure would be defined by sound judgment, integrity, meaningful reforms and an inclusive approach to leadership.
It wished the new NBA President a successful tenure and an enduring legacy of service to the legal profession and the wider society.
“May your tenure be marked by wisdom, integrity, impactful reforms, inclusion and an enduring legacy of service to the legal profession and society,” the statement said.
The association said it remained committed to supporting initiatives that promote justice, equality, professional development and the advancement of women within the Nigerian legal profession.
