Bandits are planning to attack Abuja-Kaduna train service again -SSS warns

The State Security Services (SSS) has issued a security warning regarding a significant scheme by bandits to launch an attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train service in the near future.

It will be recalled that on March 28, 2022, a train heading from Abuja to Kaduna was attacked in Katari village, Kaduna State. About 970 passengers were on board, many were hit by the assailants’ bullets and several were abducted into the bush by the marauding terrorists who were said to have arrived on motorbikes holding firearms and other deadly weapons.

This prompted a temporary suspension of operations by the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) along the route.

Sadly, despite repeated security reports and warnings about the impending attack, the authorities did nothing to secure the rail tracks and its environs. Noting was also done to safeguard the lives of passengers in the event of an attack and it happened.

A confidential letter, signed by the Director of DSS FCT Command, R.N. Adepemu, has been leaked. The letter, titled “Security Alert: Impending Threat By A Coalition Of Banditry Syndicate To Attack Abuja-Kaduna Train Service Along AKTS Corridor,” highlights the necessity for passengers on the train to exercise heightened caution.

The DSS cautioned that there is an imminent threat to the seamless functioning of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS). The internal memo disclosed that a group of bandits is collaborating to carry out an assault on the Abuja-Kaduna train with the intention of kidnapping passengers for ransom in the near future.

The letter strongly recommends that security measures be intensified both within and along the AKTS route. These measures include aerial surveillance patrols, monitoring of the rail track, military and police checkpoints and patrols, and targeted security operations in specific areas such as Byazhin, Jibi, and the Ja forest.

Additionally, the memo suggests enhancing the presence of Nigeria Police Mobile Force (NPMF) operatives equipped with walkie-talkies to ensure proper escort services on the train.

The deployment of more personnel from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) with walkie-talkies is also advised for escort duty.

The memo underscores the classified nature of its contents and warns of potential legal action for unauthorized disclosure. Furthermore, it proposes the establishment of a crisis response team for rapid intervention in the event of an attack and emphasizes the importance of intelligence sharing among all relevant stakeholders.

While this imminent threat has not yet become public knowledge, the DSS alert raises concerns about the safety of passengers and assets along the AKTS corridor.

Therefore, discreet management of this intelligence is deemed crucial. This assessment is particularly relevant in light of previous fatal attacks on the route that resulted in casualties and the abduction of passengers for extended periods before eventual release, as outlined in the DSS memo.

Catholic Church in South Africa begins class action against mining firms

The church says it filed the case after it was approached by mine workers for help.

The Catholic Church says it is shepherding a class-action lawsuit through the courts against mining companies in South Africa on behalf of coal miners with lung disease.

The Southern African Bishops Conference said on Wednesday that lawyers filed papers with South Africa’s High Court on Tuesday.

“Very often ex-mine workers are no longer members of trade unions and, therefore, lack the means and capacity to seek legal recourse from large companies which are responsible for their lung diseases,” Archbishop of Cape Town Stephen Brislin said.

“It is thus incumbent on the church to give assistance where it can, … so that they can access compensation that is legally due to them.”

The miners are represented by Richard Spoors, a lawyer who has won compensation in similar cases before.

Filed on behalf of 17 former and current mine workers, the case targets mining giant BHP, its spin-off South32 and South Africa’s Seriti, Dasantha Pillay, a lawyer with Spoors’s firm, told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

It seeks recourse for all miners who worked for these companies since 1965 and contracted lung disease as well as dependents of workers who died from coal dust-induced illness.

The firms did not immediately reply to AFP’s request for comment.

The church said it initiated and facilitated the case after it was approached by mine workers for assistance.

Coal is a bedrock of South Africa’s economy, employing almost 100,000 people and accounting for 80 percent of electricity production. The industry is concentrated in the eastern region of Mpumalanga, which environmental campaigners Greenpeace said has some of the dirtiest air in the world.

The class action accuses the companies of failing to provide their workers with adequate training, equipment and a safe working environment despite knowing the risks to coal miners.

84-year-old man kills 75-year-old wife for refusing to sleep with him

By Kehinde Okeowo

s

An 84-year-old man, Gabriel Ahuwa has confessed to killing his 75-year-old wife for refusing to make love to him for a long time.

The arrest of the octogenarian was confirmed on Wednesday, by the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, while briefing journalists in Benin.

According to NAN, the police spokesman said the elderly man is among the 198 suspects apprehended in the State for various crimes, such as armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, among others.

Speaking in the murder incident, Nwabuzor said: ”The suspect is not remorseful. After killing his wife, he still claimed that his action was the only solution to her starving him of sex,”

However, while reacting to the allegation by the police, the suspect explained that he decided to take his wife’s life because she has been declining his sexual advances.

Ahuwa, who said he has reported this to the deceased family and his own family, went on to allege that he was also told that his late wife has been sleeping with her pastors.

“My wife does not listen to me. Anytime I asked her to come and sleep with me, she would decline. We have given birth to seven children.

“I reported my wife to my family and hers too, but she failed to listen to them and continued with her old ways.

”Meanwhile, I heard that she has been sleeping with some pastors,” the suspect said.

He, however, said he regretted his action after carrying out the gruesome act.

Police apprehends ritualist that baths with human skull to attract customers

A 26-year-old businessman, Franklin Akinyosuyi told the police that he bathed with a human skull for a month to boost patronage for his businesses.

Akinyosuyi, a photographer and owner of a clothing store, stated this after he was arrested by the police. Akinyosuyi said untold hardship and low patronage made him turn to rituals.

“I am a photographer, and I own a boutique as well. It was last year that my uncle took me to a herbalist,” he said when paraded by the police in Ondo state.

“I explained to him that my business wasn’t moving well, so he asked me to pay N200,000 to make a concoction for me, which I paid within three weeks.

“After he was done, he called me to come pick it up and that was last year in November. He directed that I should be bathing with the human head every Thursday at exactly 1 am. I used it for a month but didn’t see any difference in my business. So, I had to call the herbalist and tell him to refund my money.

“I also asked him to come and pick up the human head as well, but he refused to come and pick it up, but he had started refunding my money because he already sent me N20,000. So, on that fateful day, I decided to go and throw it away, so I dropped it in my backyard.

“Unfortunately, I went out and before I could return, my landlord’s children saw it, informed their father and they ultimately called the police.”

On her part, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, police spokesperson in Ondo, said Akinyosuyi was reported to the police by his landlord following his suspicious activities.

“The suspect was challenged by his landlord for keeping a bag in a corner of the compound and the landlord was suspicious and asked the young man to open the bag,” she said.

“When he did, a human skull was found in the bag. After he was arrested, he claimed it was given to him by a native doctor in Osun state.”

I ended up studying law for 9 years – ex-UniCal law faculty alumni recounts tale of sexual harassment

When Queency Patrick, a lawyer and alumni of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar read about Nelly Idagba’s encounter with the controversial Prof. Cyril Ndifon, she told a story that revealed a deep and long-standing rot in that faculty.

Her story.

I read your story with a nostalgic depression.

I also studied in the faculty of Law Unical and can attest that your story is the experience of many female students from that faculty, not just from the notdistinguished notprof but from other predatory sex wizards.

While Ndifon gave up on me in his short pursuit, I had a nightmarish schooling existence with a certain Thomas Ekpang.

Ekpang told me face to face that if I didn’t sleep with him, I will never be a lawyer! I was failing his course, land law, a core course, and rewriting it for 4 years post-graduation. I ended up studying law for 9 years as against 5 years. I was so traumatised and swore never to practice law in my life. One day, after his threats and taunts, I told him that no member of his family will ever be a lawyer.

I wrote all manner of petitions to the then Dean and then VC and nothing came out of it, I gave up and accepted my fate until Ekpang was removed as Final Year exams officer.

The stories of Unical sex predators is a different can of worms and I hope with this protest, the whole house will be cleaned out.

Like most cases of sexual harrassmen, assault and abuse, it is not easy for victims to speak up cos at some point you begin to feel everything happening to you is ur own fault. You begin to doubt your self when no body in authority is willing to help you. I remember going as far as reaching the Chair person of the LGA where this man comes from, a woman, to no avail.

For those who fell prey, shame becomes the cloud over you need for justice. In my class forum now, a lot of women are boiling over as a result of the remembrance of thier encounters with these lecturers but none may speak out, we prefer to bury the trauma and allow it gnaw at us every time someone touches it. It is a sad situation.

I only pray and hope these young girls in this generation will get justice and thereby assuage the wounds of many.

Queency .

How Prof. Cyril Ndifon forcefully had sex with my daughter twice in his office – Prof. SinemAbasi Ekong

It was on August 29, a Saturday, I got an anonymous call from the Airport Police Station in Calabar. The caller sought to know if I was the mother of … and I said yes, he said my daughter was giving a statement at the police station. I exclaimed because the 20-year-old girl had never visited the police station before let alone give statement. The caller said she was crying when a Good Samaritan saw her, asked her some questions and eventually brought her to the station. I immediately had to call my in-law in Calabar, because we are based in Akwa Ibom State, who now had to go to the station to meet with her.

He (my in-law) went there and being a medical doctor, he directed the conduct of medical examination on her. That done, I now asked my daughter to narrate to me what transpired. She told me that she was sexually assaulted by the Dean, Faculty of Law, UNICAL, Prof. Cyril Ndifon. She said the incident happened in the dean’s office between 3 and 5pm of August 29. I immediately insisted that my in-law should bring her to Akwa Ibom, it was then my husband and I sat her down to find out what actually transpired.

I must state that she is a brilliant student; you can find that out from her department. She said they had a test, incidentally it is only the law and medical students that are on campus at the moment, others had yet to return from their short holiday. So, the entire campus is quiet but it beats my imagination why a lecturer would fix a test for Saturday when there are so many empty lecture halls begging to be used during the week.

The dean may have done this to satisfy his usual and normal animalistic behaviour. She said the test was supposed to have been for one hour and he had instructed two persons to supervise it. Suddenly, he (the dean) came in and stopped the test 20 minutes before time at which time so many students were probably struggling to dot the I’s and cross the T’s. He walked straight to my daughter’s desk collected the script and tore it.

He left the torn script on her seat, so the girl collected the pieces up and put them in her bag. She left with her three friends. According to her, you will still have to pass through the faculty before leaving the building. She said as they were leaving, the dean accosted her again and asked if she still had the shredded script, she said yes. He instructed her to follow him to the general dean’s office to recopy the answers on a plane sheet, which she did.

The unsuspecting girl followed him to the general office where two people were including the dean’s secretary. The office of the dean is on the first floor of the building, according to my daughter. She said while writing in that office, the dean who had earlier gone out, came in again and instructed her to follow him to his private office on the second floor so that she could comfortably use the table.

It meant this whole thing was premeditated because if the dean was sincere, he would have used his official office space next to the secretary’s office instead of going to his private office. She said he claimed that he had some work to do also and would want to monitor the girl and my daughter had to follow him. Not up to five minutes after getting to his private office, the dean asked the girl to kiss him, she refused. He now pretended as if all was well so that the girl could feel free. She continued copying.

Before she knew what was happening, he got up and tried to force my daughter to drink whiskey, she told him that she had never taken alcohol.

Now let me give you her background. She finished from the Air Force Comprehensive School in Akwa Ibom State where there is no cheating and where the students are well tutored. He now asked her how many A’s do you have?

My daughter said she has many. He now promised to increase the tally. She told him point blank that she was not interested in influencing her results. So, he now tried to force the drink, but the girl struggled. Before this time he had locked the door and kept the keys away. He now told her that he wants to have sex with her, they started struggling. She pleaded with him that she had not eaten since morning and that she read deep into the night for the test. But he kept struggling with her. She was shouting but there was no rescue.

In the process, he removed his clothes and continued struggling and probably overpowered her after exhaustion. He forcefully removed her trouser and assaulted her. By this time, the girl attempted to run out again but the door was locked. He dragged her back and pushed her down again. Within spilt seconds he quickly dashed out after dressing hurriedly, suspecting that people would have heard, locked the doors and came back some few minutes later with a bottle of stout.

My daughter was weak and was pleading with him to allow her go that she was feeling dizzy; he had sex with her again for the second time. When he saw that the girl was almost becoming speechless and also fainting, he opened the door and told her to go. He offered to drop her but the girl said no. She went down the building herself where she met one of her friends who was still waiting and was narrating her ordeal crying when a Good Samaritan saw her and carried her.

This case was reported at the police station. She was taken to the police clinic for medical examination. We have reported it officially to the university authority. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Epoke, was sad about it and he asked us to do a letter, which we did. I asked the vice-chancellor if the dean was above the law, because I told him that I learnt this had been his stock-in-trade over the years, he said with the letter with him, he was going to take action. The thing happened on Saturday, I called my daughter back on Sunday, and we went to see the vice-chancellor on Monday but ended up seeing him on Tuesday.

I know the God of justice is alive to see me through this case. Even though this has happened, it is my prayer that this matter should set other children free. I have confidence that the university authority will handle this because the vice-chancellor gave me his word because I told him that nobody should victimise my daughter.

For those lecturers trying to protect Ndifon, if they think this action is good, may sexual assault never depart from their families. This is a traumatising experience. I never thought it will happen because my daughter is brilliant. Why did he not choose to do it with those girls who willingly go to him to beg for scores? Why my daughter who never went to him for scores?

A 70-year-old man forcefully having sex with a 20-year-old girl, my daughter, who is the pride of the family, this is wicked. The pains of us, the parents, whose daughters he has molested, will hunt him forever and ever. She cried.

Tribunal judge says she was misquoted about SAN’s attempt to bribe her

  • As Nigerians query Her Lordship’s invocation of God’s wrath rather than the wrath of law on corrupt lawyers

By Lillian Okenwa

Although a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Eyitayo Fatogun, SAN, who was reportedly present in the court for a matter when Hon. Justice Flora Ngozi Azinge, Chair of Panel 2, Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Kano, on Tuesday, allegedly announced in open court that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria has been trying to bribe her, stood up on behalf of all lawyers present and urged that she escalated the matter to the appropriate authorities, Her Lordship has denied saying there was an attempt by a Senior Lawyer to bribe her.

PUNCH had reported that alerting a stunned court about the bribery attempt, Justice Azinge revealed that some lawyers prosecuting election matters before her have tried to corrupt the system by offering bribes to her and her colleagues.

PUNCH also reported that while encouraging Justice Azinge to report the bribe-bearing SAN to the relevant authorities, Fatogun, SAN said he was privy to cases where judges who failed to report cases of this nature were cited for judicial misconduct.

But in a trending publication by politicsdigest.ng, when Sunusi Musa, SAN, a counsel in an election matter before Justice Azinge drew Her Lordship’s attention to the bribery allegation, she denied making it.

Musa SAN to Justice Azinge: “My Lord, a news was all over the media that a senior lawyer with case before you was attempting to bribe you. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria with a case before this Honorable Tribunal, I deem it necessary to urge my Lord to name the SAN.

“We are five Senior Advocates with cases before My Lord, for clarification and the interest of our reputation, My Lord should identify this lawyer”.

In her response, Justice Azinge told Musa that she was misunderstood.

“I didn’t say that Counsel. What I said was that there is allegation that money is transferred to the account of orderly of one of us and a tribunal staff by a lawyer. The said staff is currently under investigation on this matter.

“A lawyer has attempted to bring meat for me during Eid El Kabir celebration which I declined and cautioned him that it is unethical.

“I’m here to serve with integrity and patriotism and will not give way for corrupt practice. Justice is what I’m here for,” she said

When the news broke about Justice Azinge alleging that an SAN attempted to bribe her and other judges, even as she invoked God’s wrath on anyone who collects bribe money on her behalf, many were unimpressed.

Brand Communicator, Calixthus Okoruwa said: “When some legislators sought bribe from Femi Otedola some years ago, he did not ask for the ‘wrath of God’ to descend on the fellows. Instead, he got evidence and indicted them. They promptly faced the wrath of the Law. And Femi Otedola is a layman.

“So why is a ‘Learned’ judge now waiting on the ‘wrath of God’?

“Why is a ‘Learned’ judge now pleading ‘her case’ before the court of public opinion?

“What a tragic paradox Nigeria has become!

“The people who tried to bribe her, are possibly ghosts without names!”

Ex-Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Worgu Boms, asked: “Why bring God’s Holy Mame into this mess when we have the Police and the Court and the Prison and several Laws and payment of fines and debarment and Reprimand and all to deal with this?

“Why did we even set up a Tribunal to deal with Election Petitions when there is God?

“Could God, The Great Judge, not have judged it?

“Mtchew!! We are where we are…”

Likewise, Gender Activist, Olufunke Baruwa said: “No, not God’s wrath but the law. She should report them all to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. This religiosity in public office is annoying, particularly coming from those who should know better!”

Threatening Judges and Their Families: A condemnable trend

By Kunle Edun

I have always believed that the members of the legal profession hold the key to democratic growth and development. All over the world historical jurisprudence showed the role the members of the legal profession played in the growth and development of their countries of birth and residence.

We must practice and assist the courts or the Tribunals to dispense justice in its purest form and not to erect road blocks to attaining justice. Every time, lawyers argue causes and matters in chameleonic manner just to impose injustice and pervert the cause of justice and thereby produce unjust decisions, we murder justice and enthrone evil. It is these kinds of practices that have helped to enthrone “democratic dictatorship” in our electoral jurisprudence and have emboldened political rascality in our polity.

Nigerians are worried that lawyers are the cause of the problems. This may not be entirely correct. No one says lawyers should not do their jobs, as professionals and in line the Rules of Professional Conduct. But in doing so no lawyer should act as a misleading minister in the temple of justice. No lawyer should knowingly mislead the court or Tribunal under the guise of performing his professional duties.

Mr. Christopher Alexander Sapara Williams, the first indigenous Nigerian lawyer, called to the English Bar on November 17, 1879. He defined the appropriate role of lawyers in these golden words: “The legal practitioner lives for the direction of his people and the advancement of the cause of his country.” This also informed the Motto, object and vision of the Nigeria Bar Association, which is “Promoting the Rule of Law” Lawyers must not pursue or defend the interest of their clients at all cost. The bar and the bench must all be together in the pursuit of real justice. If we do not, we would one day be victims of our own kind of justice.

Let me end this piece with the evergreen admonition of Hon. Justice Niki Tobi, JSC for the bar, the bench and the citizenry, as stated in the case of Abubakar vs. Yar’Adua (2008) 19 NWLR (Pt.1120) 1 at 177-178, paras. H-G. My Lord said, “One last word – politics as it is played in Nigeria, leaves much to be desired. There is so much acrimony, bitterness and violence. Nigerians play politics as if they are in a battlefield. It is not so. I do not agree that politics is a dirty game. It is a decent game; only some Nigerians made it dirty. The problem in Nigeria is the politics of winner takes it all. Another problem is the gain from it. I will suggest that politics should be made less attractive. If that is done, there will be less fight, acrimony and bitterness. In years back, the fight in politics was within, in the sense that only the players of the game were involved. In more recent times they have involved the judiciary. Nigeria Judges are called all sorts of names by litigants. They are suspected for the slightest action. Parties do not seem to believe that Judges can dispense justice in the light of the law and law alone. The insults are getting too much. Some of us have always taken the matter as one of occupational hazard. It has gone to beyond that and that is very very worrying. In the administration of justice, somebody must be trusted. Why not the Judges. I hate to say what I want to say to end this Judgment. But I must say it. No human being and I repeat no human being can influence me in the performance of my judicial duties. Only God can. Fortunately, God is holy and can never make us commit sin. Let every human being get that one straight for now and forever. Despite all the insults, this court will continue to administer justice in the interest of our most cherished democracy. This court has consistently promoted democracy in its judgments and will continue to do so in appropriate cases. I recall vividly in recent times that this court, in the promotion of democracy, consistently gave judgment in favour of one of the parties in this case. This court will not shy from its responsibilities as a final court in deserving cases to promote democracy in the performance of its judicial duties in accordance with Section 6 of the Constitution. This court has no jurisdiction to interpret or construe clear provisions of the constitution or a statue in the guise of promoting democracy when the enabling law does not allow it. As that will be a trespass on the constitutional role of National Assembly, it will not do such a thing. Not at all.

No matter the insults, the caricatures, the threats and billboards intimidation like “All Eyes on the Judiciary”, the Judges will still do justice and the heavens will not fall. There is a reason why there are appeal courts. If a party is not satisfied with the decision of a Court he has the right to challenge the decision by appealing to a higher court (Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court).

The structure of the court’s system is a reflection of the fact that Judges are also humans and bound to make errors, hence the availability of appeal to a panel constitution of more number of Judges. That is the only institution that is still ensuring that our democracy survives. We therefore, collectively owe the nation a duty to protect the Judiciary. Advocacy for change and reform are ok, but certainly not threats and intimidation.

I will not sell justice and anyone who collects money on my behalf will face God’s wrath – Justice Ngozi Azinge

Hon. Justice Flora Ngozi Azinge who Chairs Panel 2 of the Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Kano, on Tuesday ruffled feathers when she announced in open court that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria has been trying to bribe her.

Alerting the stunned court about the development, she disclosed that some lawyers prosecuting election matters before her, have tried to corrupt the system by offering bribes to her and her colleagues.

Although she did not disclose the identity of the senior lawyer, Justice Azinge said the Senior Advocate in question has a pending case before the tribunal.

“A Senior Advocate of Nigeria who has a pending case before me is attempting to bribe me. Money has been flying in this tribunal since yesterday. Whoever collects money on my behalf, God will punish that person and his generation yet unborn — to the fourth generation.

“They keep abusing judges, insulting us every day in the papers, in the media — that we are taking bribes.

“Let me repeat again that nobody should approach me with money again. I’m contented with what God has given me, and I have a roof over my head,” she said.

But Eyitayo Fatogun, SAN, who was present in the court for a matter, stood up on behalf of all lawyers present and urged the judge to escalate the matter to the appropriate authorities.

To reinforce his argument, the senior lawyer said he was privy to cases where judges who failed to report cases of this nature were cited for judicial misconduct.

When PUNCH contacted the Kano State Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Chairman, S. S. Gezawa, for his reaction to the allegation. He said he read the report in an online newspaper that the Chairperson of the Kano EPT, Justice Azinge alleged that some lawyers were attempting to bribe some judges.

He added that rumour had it that one of the court officials received the sum of N10 million, as a bribe.

“I’ll say, it is what it is, it is an allegation. If any member of the EPT or my Lord, the Chairperson of the panel, Justice Azinge, has any allegation or proof of evidence of such, it can be formalised, a complaint can be channelled to the NBA or to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee for necessary action against the erring lawyer.”

“We should also remember that lawyers are not immune to prosecution.”

The Kano NBA leader then advised that if there is any concrete evidence against any lawyer that he erred, it should be reported to any of the Security agencies, especially the Anti-Corruption Agencies, the police, the EFCC or the ICPC, if it involves a staff or public servant.

“So long as it has not been formalised, we will see, as my lord said, it is rumours and allegations, that is what it is”, he added.
