Will Trump’s trade war with China hurt American farmers who voted him in?

By Rosa de Acosta

US President Donald Trump has imposed an additional 145% tariffs on all Chinese imports despite pausing his “reciprocal” levies on all other countries in a stunning reversal last week.

But China is not backing down, saying it will “fight to the end” if Trump continues to escalate what is already becoming a full-blown trade war. On Friday, China also significantly ramped up its own duties on US imports into the country.

To analyze which nation might blink first, CNN examined China’s largest imports from the United States — soybeans — to see if and how that demand could be met elsewhere, what US farmers stand to lose and more.

Both countries are deeply intertwined with each other on trade, though China sells about three times more to the US than it buys. The result is a significant trade deficit amounting to almost $300 billion in China’s favor, a gap that Trump wants to close with tariffs.

China buys mainly agricultural products from the US, including soybeans, oilseeds and grains. Soybean imports, mostly used for animal feed, already took a hit during Trump’s first term when the two countries sparred in an earlier trade war.

At the time, China sought to diversify the source of its imports and looked to other countries for agricultural products. It’s set to do that again after imposing 125% tariff on all US imports – a move analysts expect could send China’s imports of American agricultural commodities like soybeans close to zero.

US soybean exports to China are now subject to a total tariff of 135%, resulting from 10% tariff imposed on certain agricultural products in March plus the 125% levy announced on Friday.

During the first US-China trade war, Brazil — the world’s leading soybean exporter — emerged as a winner, with China’s imports of the legume surging over the years. Brazilian soybean exports to China have grown by more than 280% since 2010 while US exports have remained flat.

Last November, Xi went on a state visit to Brazil, which was meant to strengthen ties between the two countries. In 2024, China was the main destination for Brazilian soybeans, accounting for more than 73% of the country’s total soybean exports.

With production expected to rise — the Brazilian soybean crop is projected to reach record levels this year — China could increase its imports from Brazil and other South American countries like Argentina, which is currently the world’s third-largest soybean producer after Brazil and the US.

What this means for US farmers

The US agricultural sector lost around $27 billion during the 2018 trade war, with 71% of the losses being soybean-related, according to the American Soybean Association.

And farmers, many of whom live in states that went for Trump in the 2024 election, are still struggling with the fallout. Only Illinois, the top soybean producer, and Minnesota, the third-largest soybean producing state, went for former Vice President Kamala Harris last November.

Most of the soybean-producing states in the US voted for President Donald Trump last November.

China is looking for more allies beyond Brazil to counter US tariffs and expand trade cooperation. On Thursday, China announced that it was willing to work with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries to strengthen communication and coordination. Earlier this week China’s Commerce Minister discussed with EU officials restarting talks on trade relief and negotiations on electric vehicles.

Motorists and passengers in FCT cry out as touts impose fines, impound vehicles

By Igho Oyoyo

Although the nation’s capital, Abuja, is known for its beauty and serenity, beneath this lies a menace that has become a nightmare for motorists and passengers alike.

Touts in Abuja, brandishing identity cards of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), have gained notoriety for harassing, intimidating and extorting unsuspecting victims at major bus stops and on highways in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Places such as Area 3, Area 10, Banex Junction, Berger Roundabout and Wuse Market, have become hotspots for these touts who seem to operate with impunity.

Their modus operandi is to invade vehicles, often blocking the road and surrounding the car, removing the backseat and demanding that the driver pay a huge sum of money, usually not less than N20,000, for the vehicle to be released. Drivers and passengers unfortunate enough to encounter these touts share harrowing tales of their experiences.

“I was driving my family to the park on a Saturday morning and parked by the service lane between Area 3 and Area 1 Bridge to make a call. That was when these touts blocked the road and surrounded my vehicle. The first thing they did was to collect my car key.

“I felt a bit relieved when I saw a Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), thinking he would come to my rescue but I was shocked when he told me, ‘Oga, don’t drag with them; they are in charge of this area.’ They took me to where they called their office under a tree at Area 1 Park, where Lugbe and Kuje passengers board their vehicles.

“They showed me their price list of offences and demanded that I pay N25,000 for wrong parking, claiming that I had violated some traffic rule. I tried to explain that I had done nothing wrong, but they would not listen. I had to part with N15,000 to free my vehicle,” he said.

Another driver, who simply identified herself as Mrs Mary, recounted a similar experience. “I was dropping off a friend at Area 3 when these touts pounced on my vehicle. They claimed that I had parked in a no-parking zone, which was not true.

“They demanded that I pay N18,000, and when I refused, they threatened to damage my vehicle. I had to call a friend who intervened before they would let me go,” she said.

Passengers are not spared either. “I was travelling from Lagos to Abuja and had to drop off at Berger Roundabout. As I was about to disembark, these touts rushed into the vehicle, claiming that the driver had not paid some sort of tax.

“They demanded that we all pay N5,000 each, or else they would not allow the vehicle to move. It was a traumatic experience and I had to part with my hard-earned money to avoid any trouble,” said an FCT resident, Mr Emmanuel Useni.

The activities of these touts have not only caused financial hardship for motorists and passengers but have also created a sense of insecurity and fear.

“I am afraid to drive in Abuja because you do not know where to park without being harassed by touts. You never know when they will pounce on you and demand money. It is as if they have a license to extort from innocent people,” a private car owner, Ms Comfort, said.

The FCT and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) authorities have been criticised for not doing enough to check the excesses of the touts.

When contacted, a senior staff member at the FCT Transport Secretariat, who preferred anonymity, stated that the office was aware of the problem and was working to address it.

“Our secretariat has received several complaints about the activities of these touts and we are taking steps to address the issue.

“The FCT has increased the presence of security personnel in areas prone to these activities and is working with the leadership of the NURTW to ensure that their members do not engage in such practices,” he said.

Additionally, the senior special assistant on media and publicity to the AMAC chairman, Kingsley Madaki, said the council had received reports of touts extorting motorists but asserted that these touts are not council staff.

“Those hoodlums on the roads are not AMAC staff. The chairman has said that whenever such people are seen harassing individuals, the police should be called to arrest them. We have arrested some in the past and they often claim to operate under FCT, DOAS or the Transport Secretariat.

“Our staff are not on the road because they are well-trained; they are not touts like those who harass and extort drivers. We do not have any of our staff harassing people. Sometimes people misunderstand these NURTW hoodlums for AMAC staff and it is not so,” he said.

However, many residents are sceptical about the government’s commitment to addressing the issue. “We have heard promises before but nothing seems to have changed. These touts continue to operate with impunity and it seems like the government is not serious about addressing the issue,” said a motorist, Hassan Hussein.

A member of the NURTW, Sunday Sule, denied that their members were involved in the extortion racket on major roads in the FCT, admitting that they were not aware of such activities.

“We have not received any reports of our members engaging in such conduct. However, I will try to reach out to our leadership and if what you are saying is true, I assure you that our leaders will work with the authorities to address the issue and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.

Despite the denials, many residents believe that the NURTW is complicit in the activities of the touts.

A civil servant in the Federal Ministry of Education, Donald Iyobosa, said he had been a victim of the touts at Area 1, who showed him their NURTW ID cards.

“It is hard to believe that NURTW is not aware of what’s going on. These touts are using NURTW identity cards to extort people. It’s clear that they have the backing of the union.

“I have been a victim of their harassment and it was not a funny experience at all. I dropped a colleague at Area 1, and before I knew it, three of the touts entered my car and told me that I had been arrested for wrong parking. I ended up bailing my car for N15,000,” he said.

An Uber driver, Mohammed Yusuf, lamented that the activities of the Abuja touts have negatively impacted the economy, forcing many drivers to increase their prices to account for the demands of the touts.

“We have had to raise our transport fares to cover the money we have to pay these touts. It is affecting our bottom line and making it difficult for us to operate,” he said.

He appealed to the FCT authorities to take a decisive action on the matter.

Leadership

For the Yoruba of northern Nigeria

By Lasisi Olagunju

“As an Offa citizen, I am made to look like an inferior being. While competing for anything in the North, I would be told that I am a Yoruba man. If there is something to compete for in the South-West, I would be reminded that I am a northerner. Permanently, I am an inferior citizen until this lopsided, skewed, warped national structure is re-configured.”

Chief J. S. Olawoyin was the leader of the opposition in the Northern Nigerian House of Assembly from 1956 to 1961. On Wednesday, 5 February 2025, I was in his hometown, Offa, Kwara State, to review a book launched by his family and the Offa community to posthumously mark his centenary. Olawoyin was the first Asiwaju of Offa and a Yoruba patriot who used his entire political lifetime fighting against his people being put unfairly in northern Nigeria. For this, he was jailed, released and jailed many times. At the book launch event, I used the review to interrogate the dilemma – actually the tragedy – of a floating people; bats who are neither south nor north. The quote above is on page 22 of that book.

Heaven is God’s throne; Earth, His footstool. Whether throne or footstool, whichever you are, you are part of the palace. But some people are neither throne nor stool; they are neither on earth nor in heaven. They float. That is what we see in the recent NNPCL appointments and the subsequent noise over the Yoruba of northern Nigeria’s Kogi and Kwara states, and the perceived privileges they enjoy under a south-western Yoruba president.

My Zaria friend came for me at the weekend. He called (calls) me Tinubu’s man. I don’t know what I have achieved to merit that badge of honour. He accused me and everyone around me of marginalising the North in federal appointments. “Once you people can’t get a Yoruba from Lagos, you go pick one from any of the SW (South-West) states. If none exists, you slide to Kwara or Kogi to get one. Tinubu will be an OTP (One Term President). It shall be well.” That is his WhatsApp message to me.

His mention of Kogi and Kwara strikes me. Butterflies are not birds and can’t be birds unless their Creator recreates them. Think about this: If you were born a Yoruba, and Kwara or Kogi is your state, can you ever be president of Nigeria? If you contest a major political party’s presidential primary and there is a freak, and you win the ticket, where will your running mate come from? Will he or she come from the North where you geographically belong or from the South where, ethnically, your home is? Can you even be vice president? The same factors that make you unfit for number one cancels you out for number two.

But, sometimes the butterfly enjoys birdy bounties. You are Yoruba from the North Central. You will be lucky if the president is your brother Yoruba from the South-West. Because blood is thicker than water, he will give you jobs that are zoned to northern Nigeria. Only he can do that. To any other, you are a nobody. And, if your brother does that for you, he will say Eni ò dùn mó kò gbodò wí. Those unhappy won’t be able to shout because they also need you tomorrow. You have been that lucky twice: Under Olusegun Obasanjo, you produced, twice, the Chief of Naval Staff (Admirals Samuel Afolayan and Ganiyu Adekeye). The officers, in 2001 and in 2005, respectively filled a northern slot – because they were northerners. And now under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Yoruba of Kogi and Kwara become, once again, northern Nigerians.

Every ethnic group should be a ruling house in a just Nigeria. But no. There are Royal Houses, long decided. It is a huge misfortune to be a minority here. It is worse if your tiny conchie has to contest a space with regional hawks. Think of how really the minority have fared in the North since the beginning of Nigeria. The British were not tentative in anything they did here; they left records. And, through those records, we get great insights into what they did with the country, where we are and the likely face of the future.

I use their records to address here the spectacle of spectators called the Yoruba of the North Central. Those who created Nigeria divided the regions (north and west) along the lines of pre-colonial conquest. With painstaking dutifulness, they also maintained interesting profiles of the tribes that inhabit each of the regions. For the North, they observed and kept a meticulous account of the peoples, their features and their characters. They then decided who would rule and who would serve the rulers.

Major G. Merrick, researcher and officer of the colonial government, wrote a long list of tribes in his ‘Languages in Northern Nigeria’ (published in October 1905). Beyond listing the tribes, he has a cross-ethnic comparison of each of the peoples’ mental and physical fitness. The first group he identifies in our North are the Shuwa Arabs whom he says “are a good class of men” who have “a certain independence of spirit, objecting to being commanded by Yorubas…whom they hold to be inferior races.” This feeling, he says, “has earned them a reputation for insubordination.” The Hausas, he says, “make the best soldiers”. The (northern) Yoruba are “useless as soldiers.” The Fulani, he writes, are “an intelligent race” but they are “somewhat exclusive, and the negro is, in general, somewhat afraid of them.” The list is long. Every ethnic group mentioned in that publication has a mark of the beast.

Lord Frederick Lugard in his ‘Northern Nigeria’ (published in January 1904), has a deeper (political) assessment of the groups that make up his favourite Northern Region. To Lugard, the Hausas are “the business-men of West Africa” who also “make admirable soldiers, and are brave and reliable.” The Yoruba, Lugard notes, “are hardly less keen traders than the Hausas, at least equally industrious, and much quicker to learn.” The Fulani, he calls “the ruling race” but whose “misrule has compelled interference” by the British. Lugard, however, declares that “bad as their (Fulani) rule has been…the future of the virile races of the protectorate lies largely in the regeneration of the Fulani.” Lugard explains how he arrived at that conclusion. He says the Fulani’s “…coloured skins, their mode of life and habits of thought, appeal more to the native populations than the prosaic rule of the Anglo-Saxon can ever do.” He then declares a resolve “to regenerate this capable race, to mould them to ideas of justice and mercy, so that in a future generation, if not in this, they may become worthy instruments of rule under British supervision” (page 8).

Note what those two gentlemen wrote on the principal tribes of the North. The past is forever true with our present. It explains why some people rule forever, and others, till eternity, rue their exclusion from power. Think about T. S. Eliot’s “Time present and time past/ Are both perhaps present in time future/ And time future contained in time past.”

My Zaria friend was angry because of the appointment of the NNPCL Managing Director, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, a native of Oke Ode in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. My friend would not listen to me when I told him that Kwara and Kogi are in the North and Ojulari, from that axis, is a northerner like him. He insisted that the reason the man got the job was because of his Yoruba ethnicity. From my friend’s tempest, it would appear that the far Muslim North is the only North. He forwarded to me a social media post comparing Buhari’s nepotism with that of Tinubu. My friend gave the trophy of dubiety to Tinubu.

A very long list of Yoruba appointees of Tinubu is slithering across the World Wide Web. I looked at that list; I read through Buhari’s records. One mirrors the other. They mock Nigeria; they shame decency; they laugh at whatever our old and new national anthems say about unity and brotherhood; about truth and justice.

The government is scrambling to say the Tinubu list is a lie. The regime stutters, very embarrassingly. Can we also have lists of appointees made from other tribes? Tribe and tongue are the new identifiers. States and regions are dead.

Whatever the North does to the Yoruba and their Tinubu now and in the future serves right the Yoruba elite. They used to demand a restructuring of the Nigerian federation for better delivery. They harassed regimes after regimes with that demand. They said it was the cure-all for what ailed Nigeria. But they are quiet now; very quiet. They are either with their brother, eating with both hands and with ten fingers or they are sharpening their teeth, expecting to be called to the table. It is a shame that they forget that this Egúngún festival is never forever. At the end of this season, priests and all, including their children, will have to pay before they eat àkàrà and èko.

We read statements that talk of “Tinubu’s Yoruba government”. Can I be allowed to say that Tinubu is not building a Yoruba cult for Nigeria? The strongman is, instead, carefully building a sect of personal devotees. A majority of his worshippers being Yoruba (from Lagos) is just normal. But how far can one region, one ethnic group, or a cabal, or a family go enjoying Nigeria alone? We saw how fleeting, brief, and transient it was with the insular, north-centric regime of Muhammadu Buhari. The streets of the North enjoyed it while it lasted. And, I think some of us warned the North that time that today would come; and it is here. Where I come from, we say that if you eat alone, your eyes would be red twice: the first time is when you eat yours, the second is when others eat theirs. If I were of Buhari’s persons and region, I would be too ashamed to complain that someone is using my fake coin to pay for my service.

Ikú nde Dèdè; Dèdè nde ‘kú – Death baits Dede; Dede baits Death. Tinubu plays the tongue-twisting game. The president took the chairmanship of the NNPCL from his bosom friend in the South-West; he gave it to an ‘outsider’ from the North-East. He took the Managing Director of that company from the North-East and gave it to the North-Central. The two top jobs went to the North, yet the North is in pains. The South-West has neither of the two juicy positions, yet it is rejoicing and dancing. The region that lost the chairmanship of the oil company is grateful; the one that gained the firm’s two topmost posts is angry. Oxymoronic reactions. Outsiders would be confused. But the child that is crying knows why it is weeping; the mum knows why the child is inconsolable. From the two divides are reactions that confirm the artificiality (or superficiality) of what we call zones and states, and Nigeria. It is a stain on our claims to a banner of unity and strength.

Our president does what he wants when he wants it while leaving the dazed asses to bray. But, across the Niger is a humming volcano called the North. It is very evident that the North is mobilizing for battle. The northern establishment has gone to exhume Buhari from provincial Daura. They’ve replanted him in their regional capital, Kaduna, for proper coordination of the street and the boys. I think Tinubu knows what is going on; but he is not bothered. He thinks he is the other power bloc and is on very firm ground. He truly is. If he were in Italy, he would be addressed as Capo di tutti capi – boss of all bosses. He thinks he is Nigeria’s very first real strongman. And he acts and lives it. He has money in super abundance – his wife and son show this off dropping some billions here, some billions there – in a season of famine. The man has power and he knows how to use both with precision and to maximum effects. He combines Muhammed Ali’s stings with Iron Mike Tyson’s bulldozer punches. If I were part of his enemies, I would be very worried. This man won’t go the Goodluck Jonathan way.

In all of this, the ordinary man, north and south, are the losers. They lose life, they lose living. Under Buhari’s ‘Change’, their lives took a plunge. Today, they battle to breathe.

Military attacks in Amasiri Ebonyi State: Abuja Lawyer petitions CDS, DSS, CP

Following an alleged military resurgence in a community (Amasiri) in Ebonyi State, an Abuja-based public interest lawyer, M.O. Idam, has called for the intervention of major stakeholders in Nigeria’s security architecture to curb the unnecessary waste of human lives and property.

In a 14th April petition addressed to the Chief of Defence Staff, the Commandant, Nkwegu Military Cantonment, Nkwegu, Abakaliki, the Director General of the Security Service, the Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Police Command, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State and the Governor of Ebonyi State, Idam Esq. urged “Nigerians to speak against the ongoing needless military aggression and urge the Chief of Defence Staff and the Commandant Nkwegu Military Cantonment to withdrew the military operation in Amasiri.”

The petition reads:

Sir,

RE- CRY FOR HELP, AMASIRI IS BLEEDING.

RE-EMERGENCE OF MILITARY INVASION, BRUTALITY AND AGRESSION REIGN FREELY AGAINST MY COMMUNITY, AMASIRI.

The above subject refers.

As a civil rights and public interest lawyer of Amasiri indigene, I write in pensive but helpless emotion to yet again draw the attentions of well meaning Nigerians and the authorities to the above subject matter, yearning for an urgent intervention.

The crisis between Oso Edda and Amasiri in Ebonyi State which has regrettably occasioned the loss of several lives and properties and has continued to pose tension, hostility and anxiety among the two neighbouring communities (Oso Edda and Amasiri) in Ebonyi State, despite effort by Amasiri indigenes to pursue amicable settlement options only, in resolving the matter, even the face of provocations.

Quite disturbing is that on 11th April 2025, the stakeholders of Amasiri, in pursuance of their resolve to seek peaceful alternative to the resolution of the conflicting issues with their Oso Edda neighbour, attended a peace committee setup by the Commissioner of Police Ebonyi State, following an invitation for that purpose, which was also attended to by several other stake holders in old Afikpo Zone. Unfortunately, the Oso Edda neighbouring community refused, ignored and or completely rebuffed the invitation to attend the peace committee and instead, seized the opportunity to again embark on another round of attacks against certain communities in Amasiri while her stakeholders was away in Abakaliki seeking peaceable settlement to the conflicting issues.

The attack which targeted Ama-iyime and Ozara-Okangwu of Amasiri, saw several properties worth millions of naira burnt while several other valuables also looted in the process. An incident that has triggered the already existing tension, anxiety and unrest among the once most blissful and quiet community, Amasiri in Ebonyi State.

While Amasiri indigenes and visitors who identify with her are targeted for onslaught by their estranged Oso Edda neighbouring community who are now on rampage along the Okigwe-Afikpo federal highway, waylaying vehicles and fishing out commuters who are either of Amasiri origin or identify with Amasiri. This coordinated aggression is freely carried out uninterruptedly as a result of tacit silence from the state government of Ebonyi State.

More worrisome is that there is a totally unprovoked, unwarranted and needless military resurgence in my community. Amasiri. Over the night, the military who are reportedly detailed from Nkwegu barracks reinvaded yet again my community, breaking homes, destroying properties, arresting the young and old and shooting sporadically in a totally peaceful area, without any news of any form of attacks from Amasiri or crisis in Amasiri, while leaving the aggressor, her Edda neighbouring Community. This unrest is reportedly aided, sponsored and coordinated by powerful politicians in Edda zone who have deployed their contacts in government to set the military at all cost against my people in Amasiri just as a bait to secure a major progrom or massacre of Amasiri people simply to achieve their agelong desire to take over her ancestral land.

The public is hereby notified that there is no crisis nor violence in Amasiri and her people have not in the list of ways behaved in any manner to warrant a military presence.

I am constrained to yet again call on Nigerians to speak against the ongoing needless military aggression and urge the Chief of Defence Staff and the Commandant Nkwegu Military Cantonment to withdrew the military operation in Amasiri, which is totally unwarranted and unprovoked, even as I prevail on the governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency Francis Ogbonnia Nwifuru to quickly intervene in this matter to save the lives and properties of the peaceful people of Amasiri.

The governor is here again informed that there is total unrest in Amasiri which is occasioned by the military; homes are deserted, farmlands are also not safe, economic activities have been halted as anxiety and tension now possess the hitherto quiet and peaceful land. The governor is urged to most urgently break the deafening silence and intervene in the matter to restore peace in Amasiri.

In a loud but very helpless voice, I urge the governor of Ebonyi State to quickly and directly address the situation personally as the Chief Security Officer of the state to curtail the ongoing intimidation, harassment and prevent a possible carnage on the defenceless and vulnerable people of Amasiri.

Let the whole world know that there was no reason for the resurgence or re-invassion of the military. The people have remained peaceful and have been attending all the peace meetings called for my the authorities in search of peace.

The military re-invasion in Amasiri remains unlawful, ill-motivated, self-serving, unwarranted, illegal, unprovoked and most be condemned by every Nigerian.

A concerned indigene.

Open Letter to PBAT, While You are in France, Ask the French President Why he didn’t Declare a State of Emergency During the Political Crisis of 2024: If the French President (AND THE UK, AND USA) had a penchant for state of emergency, where would you be traveling to for vacation?

By Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja

Bonjour Monsieur President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT),

Pardon my french, and pidgin English, “you really fuck up oh, by this declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State ohhh”!!!

I had to say it in French because I hear that you are currently vacationing or is it a working visit in France!!!

To borrow the expression that we Nigerians learned from the popular TV show: “WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE”, “Was this State of Emergency in Rivers State your final answer ?” As in, had you explored and exhausted all other options?

To borrow another expression from the same TV show: “Could you not have phoned a family or a friend or more experienced political leader like the President of France to ask for advice before declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers”.?

Indeed, if you had asked the French President, Emmanuel Marcon for advice, he would not have advised you to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers State as a solution to a political crisis.

In June 2024, this French President was only 46 years old when he faced (and successfully handled) one of the worst political crises in France since the year 1962.

Yet, as a solution, the French President did not declare a State of Emergency upon the Parliament of France or any other territory of France!!!

Monsieur President BAT Sir, please pause and think for a minute:

“If the President of France and his counterparts in the United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom are in the habit (have the penchant) of declaration of a State of Emergency, as a solution to any political crisis within their countries, would you be frequently traveling to the said countries for vacation?”

Yesterday, I was driving home after attending the memorial of the death of Jesus Christ which held at the auditorium of the National Polytechnic of the Kingdom of Lesotho, I was listening to the news on radio, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

It was announced that for the first time in so many years, the Parliament of the United Kingdom had enacted a legislation to declare a State of Emergency!!!

This State of Emergency was not declared upon any territory or region of the United Kingdom.

No, the legislation was enacted to declare a State of Emergency upon British Steel Corporation by empowering the government to take over its operations from the current owners which was a Chinese company!!!

The BBC News stated that this is the first time in a long time that the Parliament of the United Kingdom that such a “draconian” legislation was being enacted!!!

Wait till you hear this!!!

The major reason why the Parliament of the United Kingdom declared this State of Emergency was in the best interests of the citizens of the said British Steel Corporation.

Majority of the staff of the said British Steel Corporation were at risk of losing their jobs if the Chinese owners had gone ahead with the declaration of bankruptcy and winding up of the said steel company.

Also, the risk of loss of livelihood of many citizens of the United Kingdom who provide ancillary services within the vicinity wherein the said steel company was located!!!

It was based upon these cogent, verifiable and over-riding public interests that the Parliament of the United Kingdom declared a State of Emergency on the British Steel Corporation!!!

Monsieur President BAT and members of the National Assembly of Nigeria, was there any one page document that contained a verifiable, empirical evidence of destruction of oil pipelines in Rivers State before you both enacted legislation to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers State?

Was the said report authored by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, which has the responsibility for protection and prevention of vandalism Oil pipelines in Nigeria according to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps Act, 2007?

I look forward to your anticipated prompt and positive response.

Yours faithfully,
Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja.

Blood test could detect Parkinson’s disease before symptoms emerge

Researchers behind test using biomarkers say it could ‘revolutionise’ early diagnosis of disease

Researchers have developed a simple and “cost-effective” blood test capable of detecting Parkinson’s disease long before symptoms emerge, according to a study.

About 153,000 people live with Parkinson’s in the UK, and scientists who undertook the research said the test could “revolutionise” an early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, “paving the way for timely interventions and improved patient outcomes”.

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition in which nerve cells in the brain are lost over time. This leads to a reduction of the chemical dopamine which plays an important part in controlling movement.

This new test, which the Times reports costs £80, analyses small pieces of genetic material known as transfer RNA fragments (tRFs) in the blood, focusing on a repetitive RNA sequence that accumulates in Parkinson’s patients.

It also looks at a parallel decline in mitochondrial RNA, which deteriorates as the disease progresses. Mitochondria exist inside cells and generate energy.

By measuring the ratio between these biomarkers, researchers said the test “offers a highly accurate, non-invasive, rapid and affordable diagnostic tool, providing hope for early interventions and treatments that could change the course of the disease”.

On a scale where a score of 1 indicates a perfect test while 0.5 shows the test is no better than flipping a coin, the test scored 0.86, the Times reported.

The best clinical tests presently used on patients showing early signs of the disease scored 0.73, according to the study published in the journal Nature Aging.

The test uses the same PCR technology used during the pandemic to confirm Covid cases. It works by amplifying the genetic material being targeted, which allows it to be detected.

“This discovery represents a major advancement in our understanding of Parkinson’s disease and offers a simple, minimally invasive blood test as a tool for early diagnosis,” said Prof Hermona Soreq of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who supervised the study. “By focusing on tRFs, we’ve opened a new window into the molecular changes that occur in the earliest stages of the disease.”

Prof David Dexter, director of research at Parkinson’s UK, said: “This research represents a new angle to explore in the search for a biological marker for Parkinson’s. In this case the marker can be identified and measured in the blood which makes it attractive for a future patient-friendly diagnostic test for Parkinson’s.

“More work is needed to continue to test and validate this possible test, especially understanding how it can distinguish between other conditions that have similar early signs to Parkinson’s.”

The study was led by PhD student Nimrod Madrer under the supervision of Prof Soreq at the Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences and the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences, at the Hebrew University, in collaboration with Dr Iddo Paldor from the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, and Dr Eyal Soreq from the University of Surrey and the Imperial College London.

Ubani SAN says, Hartland must appear before Senate over Umuahia-Ikwuano-Ikot Ekpene road contract

By Chidinma Omar

Senior legal practitioner, Dr Monday Ubani, SAN has indicated his intention to drag Hartland Construction Company before the Senate Committee on Public Petitions to answer questions on its failure to fully execute the contract for the reconstruction of the Umuahia – Ikwuano – Ikot Ekpene Road despite an augmentation of N14.37billion by the Federal Executive Council on February 3, to ensure that the construction continues without delays.

The 49-kilometre federal road contract awarded in 2019 at N13 billion is being handled by Hartland Construction Company and Raycon Construction Company. Due to the dilapidated state of road the journey from Umuahia to Ikot Ekpene on the 49 kilometre road during the rainy season, takes over six hours even putting at risk heavy-duty vehicles conveying goods from Akwa Ibom and Cross River States

Proffering reasons why the construction company must appear before the Senate Committee, Ubani argues that despite recently approved additional funding for the road, why is the contractor not on site? He also raises other queries that the company must respond to: Why is the pace of work still alarmingly slow? What happened to the NNPC funds previously announced? How much has been expended so far, and can the work done justify the billions reportedly allocated?

Ubani further maintained that the Hartland must provide a clear timeline when will it will resume full work on the road.

Ubani added that what triggered his recent public intervention was a disturbing report that the reconstruction work will not terminate at the Abia-Akwa Ibom border as earlier envisaged

According to him, the company had told some community leaders that they had only a few more kilometres left before terminating the project and advised that local leaders should “speak out” if those communities hoped to benefit. He described the revelation as both heartbreaking and unacceptable

Earlier, Ubani had written a public letter to President Bola Tinubu lamenting that the people of Ikwuano LGA of Abia State and indeed all road users between Abia and Akwa Ibom, Cross River demand with due respect, immediate government intervention on the road

“This road, which is a major link between Abia and Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, has become a death trap. Accidents have become frequent and fatal. The road is nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season, and the impact on commerce, agriculture, education, and the general well-being of our people is devastating. For over twenty years, our people have endured unbearable suffering on this route.

“We implore Your Excellency to urgently direct the relevant authorities, especially the Minister of Works to investigate and resolve whatever is stalling progress and ensure the immediate resumption and completion of this vital project that of great economic importance to the region and Nigeria generally”, he stated in the letter which was copied the Minister of Works and the Senate President.

Ubani also replied Hon Sam Onuigbo, former member of the House of Representatives and board member of the North East Development Commission, NEDC

In a statement, Ubani states: “My attention has been drawn to the recent rebuttal and attack by Hon. Sam Onuigbo concerning my consistent and unwavering advocacy for the completion of the Ikwuano/Ikot Ekpene federal road project.

“Let me state unequivocally and solemnly: If my advocacy for the completion of this critical road infrastructure is motivated by a selfish political agenda or personal vendetta, may it never be well with me, my family, and my generations. But if my actions are genuinely driven by the desire to see my people enjoy the basic dividends of democracy and to ensure that Ikwuano is connected by a good road for the benefit of all, may the Almighty God whom we all serve bless me and my family beyond measure for generations to come.

“I have deliberately maintained a dignified silence on the state of this road project for a long time, trusting that those who facilitated the award of the contract and the contractor, Hartland Company, would do the needful. Unfortunately, what we have received instead are endless excuses and minimal progress since the project commenced in 2019.

“My people will recall that I vowed that this particular project would not suffer the fate of previous abandoned road contracts in our area. I pledged to pursue its completion vigorously, and that is precisely what I am doing. I shall not be deterred by name-calling, blackmail, or political distractions.

“What triggered my recent public intervention was a disturbing report I received from the President General of Awomukwu and the Mayor of Ikwuano, both of whom I encouraged to engage with Hartland Company for a firsthand update on the project status. According to them, and this can be independently verified, the company stated clearly that their construction works would not extend to Ekebedi, Awomukwu, and Ariam communities. They claimed they had only a few more kilometers left before terminating the project, and advised that local leaders should “speak out” if those communities hoped to benefit.

“This revelation was both heartbreaking and unacceptable.

“First, the pace and quality of the current work are grossly inadequate. Second, to now learn that entire communities may be excluded from the scope of the contract has left me no choice but to take decisive action. I have consequently prepared a formal petition to the Senate Committee on Public Petitions to summon the contractor and their alleged backers to explain to the people of Ikwuano the cause of this delay and the exclusion of critical areas from the project.

“We have also learned that the Federal Executive Council recently approved additional funding for this road. If so, where is the contractor? Why is the pace still alarmingly slow? What happened to the NNPC funds previously announced? How much has been expended so far, and can the work done justify the billions reportedly allocated?

“It is worrisome that Hartland has maintained a conspicuous silence, leaving Hon. Sam Onuigbo, who claims credit for attracting the contract, to speak for them. With due respect, my brother Hon. Onuigbo must understand that this project is not about him; it is about the people of Ikwuano. It is not a matter of political relevance, it is a matter of life, development, and access for our people.

“I am not in any contest with anyone. I, Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, SAN, simply want a functional, durable road from Umuahia to Ikot Ekpene, one that benefits every village along the corridor, including mine.

“My happiness will be complete the day it takes me just 25 minutes to drive from Umuahia to Awomukwu. That is the future I envision, and that is what I am fighting for.

“Therefore, I respectfully urge Hon. Onuigbo, as the self-appointed spokesman of the contractor, to give the people of Ikwuano regular and transparent updates on the project. That would help end these unnecessary confrontations and reassure our people of the sincerity of the entire effort.

“May God judge everyone involved in this matter according to the purity, or otherwise, of their intentions.

“We demand a clear timeline: When will Hartland resume full work? When will the entire stretch from Umuahia to Ikot Ekpene be completed without omitting any Ikwuano community?”
