Herdsmen and the security challenge, By Dakuku Peterside

In the South West, Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has recently been in the news. The self-styled Yoruba activist gained popularity (or notoriety) recently in the country after he led an attack against a Fulani community leader in Oyo whom he accused of harbouring Fulani herders engaging in criminal activities. Following persistent attacks in Ibarapa area of Oyo State by suspected Fulani herdsmen, Mr Adeyemo issued an ultimatum to the herdsmen to vacate the area.

When the ultimatum expired, he led some youth to the house of the head of the Fulani community in Igangan town, Abdulkadri Saliu, chased him out of the community. The Fulani leader, called the Seriki Fulani has since relocated to Kwara State with his family. Mr Adeyemo subsequently visited Ogun State and ordered herdsmen out in his self-appointed mandate of chasing Fulani herders out of Yorubaland.

In the South East on 12 December 2020, leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, announced the formation of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Eastern Security Network (ESN). He claimed the purpose of the ESN is to protect Igbos against Fulani raiders. Unwilling to countenance the formation of a non-state-sanctioned paramilitary organisation on its territory, the Nigerian government was said to have deployed the army to locate ESN camps.

On 22 January, Nigerian soldiers invaded Orlu in Imo State to search for ESN operatives. The resulting fracas caused the burning of buildings and death and injury of both soldiers and ESN members. On January 28, more than 400 Nigerian soldiers including Nigerian Air Force planes, were deployed to oust the ESN. The state government declared a curfew which caused civilians to flee the city in large numbers.

In the North Central, in a video clip that has gone viral on social media, Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, accused the Federal Government of protecting the interest of armed herders despite the atrocities they commit in different parts of the country worsening the security situation in Nigeria. The governor stated that there is insecurity propelled by armed herdsmen from North West, North East, North Central, South East, South West, and South-South. He argued that the Miyetti Allah leaders must be arrested and prosecuted for the crisis and the government must openly criticise,  arrest,  and prosecute Fulani herdsmen carrying AK-47. He accused the Federal Government of playing Ostrich with the herdsmen crisis.

The above incidents are snapshots of some Nigerians’ security concerns and sentiments in the past few weeks across the country. They are baffling as they are harmful.  Since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, the country has been grappling with various security challenges – insurgency,  kidnapping, and the herder-farmer conflicts. The herdsmen/farmer crises have demonstrated high potential to exacerbate the insecurity in rural and urban communities in Nigeria. Violence between Fulani herdsmen and farmers is one of Nigeria’s most persistent security problems and has left thousands of people dead in the past few years. This is part of the general security challenges in the country and the focus of today’s discourse.

The prevalence of the country’s security crises has become a significant concern for well-meaning Nigerians considering the impact on the nation’s peace, security, and economy. Destruction of lives and properties arising from farmer-herder clashes has almost become an everyday affair in different parts of the country. These crises have led to acute instability, creating a fearful atmosphere that harms the economy as it discourages investors, both domestic and foreign.

In recent times, the herder-farmer clashes have taken a new dimension as host communities accuse the herdsmen of kidnappings, rape, murder, and all manner of criminal activities. They are perceived as a severe security threat in many communities in the North Central and Southern parts of the country. Today, the herdsmen’s actions might be viewed by many as the greatest threat to Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The origins of the farmer-herder imbroglio are well known. Farmer-herder crises in Nigeria occur due to resource scarcity; there is a growing scarcity of arable land, impending desertification of the Sahel-Savannah, and scarcity of water essential to sustain crop cultivation and cattle herds. The increasing desertification and the effects of climate change have further increased the herdsmen’s drive to move further south in search of grazing land and pasture for their livestock.

These southward movements always pitch them against farmers and the host community whose crops are regularly invaded and destroyed by the cattle during this seasonal movement. The result of this is increased conflict, death, displacement, and the destruction of properties. Cattle rustling, the advent of heavily armed criminal herdsmen and the increasing cultural differences among ethnic groups that predominantly farm, or graze cattle further exacerbate the crisis.

The current situation would not have gotten worse if the government did not abandon the grazing reserve system created by the Northern Regional Government in 1965. Then, the government created over 417 grazing reserves in the north. Under the grazing reserve system, the government provided space, water, and vaccinations for the livestock while the herdsmen paid taxes to the government in return.

As it is often in Nigeria, this working system was upended by oil discovery in the country. Oil exploration and export made Nigeria an oil economy, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s. Nigeria abandoned the grazing reserve system due to the agricultural sector’s neglect as the mainstay of its economy.

Consequently, grazing reserves which were under a neglected agricultural sector was not sustained. It received little or no attention from succeeding administrations. As a fallback, herdsmen began to resort back to their traditional and seasonal grazing routes, currently interrupted or interfered with by industrialisation, urbanisation, demographic, and other natural factors. This leads to clashes and conflict with farmers and host communities.

The ‘herdsmen crisis’ persists because the government has not demonstrated the much-needed political will to end the crises. For a conflict that has the capacity of tearing the country apart, it is instructive that political leaders have failed to invoke appropriate legislation and executive actions capable of tackling the issue.

Unfortunately, some politicians have sought to capitalise on the crisis. It is indisputable that some local leaders who have been unable to provide good governance to their people resort to ethnic chauvinism by literally pouring fuel on the farmer-herder conflict to ramp up support amongst the local populace enhancing their popularity.

On its part, the Federal Government might not have shown the right political will to enforce laws that can end the crisis. The government is perceived rightly or wrongly from some quarters as sympathetic to the herdsmen’s activities. This perception is likely because the President is Fulani, the same ethnic group that dominates the cattle business. The government must correct this impression and firmly show that it does not link itself to criminality and conflict, regardless of ethnicity.

Many Nigerians are shocked that the Federal Government does not seem to deal with the herdsmen-farmer conflicts in different parts of the country with the same strength and determination it shows in similar internal security issues in other parts of the country. Impunity reigns supreme as some criminal herdsmen, especially those engaged in kidnapping, apprehended by security agencies are allegedly released shortly afterwards. The government must show Nigerians its scorecard on dealing with the herdsmen-farmers conflict. Nigerians should know where the government stands on the issue and must see the government as enforcing law and order, whether on the side of herdsmen or farmers.

The herdsmen crisis is a human security issue. There are four main issues of policy and politics invoked in this problem. The first is the adjusting of the mode of the business of cattle rearing from primordial herding system to the present system of ranching as seen in other climes globally. Roving cattle grazing in the age of industrial ranching and mechanized meat production should be discouraged and the culture modified.  Secondly, herdsmen are carrying sophisticated weapons freely and are posing threat to life and property, especially when there are laws that forbid this. This impunity should be immediately discouraged, and appropriate laws enforced.

Thirdly, if any herdsman would veer away from the escort of their cattle into kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, they should be viewed as outright criminals. Law enforcement should deal with herdsmen criminals according to law.

Fourthly, the clashes between herdsmen and the various communities where they operate poses a challenge of diversity management for the state and federal governments. The government should not allow sentiments and politics to becloud matters of enterprise regulation and crime control.

There is a need to encourage community policing, taking advantage of the already existing vigilante system in most states of the country. Community policing will help intelligence gathering about criminal herdsmen, and other undesirable elements and mischief-makers in our communities while civil police would respond to such threats. This will help address the challenges of waiting for the Federal Government to deploy security to states when there is farmer-herder conflict.

The federal and state governments should strengthen conflict resolution and peacebuilding mechanisms at state and local government levels and within rural communities, particularly in areas most affected by farmer-herder conflict. The idea that some ethnic nationalities in Nigeria are incompatible is a fallacy. What is lacking is the sense of fairness and equity which brings about suspicions, apprehension, frustration and consequently conflicts.

The government should establish grazing reserves in consenting states and improve livestock production and management to minimise contacts and friction between herders and farmers. The government will be able to do this by revisiting the 1965 Northern Regional Government’s Grazing Reserve System and remodelling it to deal with contemporary threats. The grazing reserves will be situated in the northern states where governments have already earmarked lands for this purpose.

In addition to this, the government should also seek the cooperation and support of all parties involved in the ‘herdsmen crisis’ – herdsmen, farmers, state, and local governments, to accept the idea of modern ranching as an alternative to traditional migration of herders which causes friction and other associated threats.

In conclusion, security is crucial to a nation’s sustainable development. The government’s seeming failure to solve the people’s security needs is what has led to non-state actors such as Sunday Igboho and Nnamdi Kanu/ESN to seize the initiative, which ends up creating more problems than solutions and driving the country to the threshold of disintegration. It is what has led a state governor to engage in ethnic profiling openly. It is what will lead to more mayhem unless something is done to solve the security problem now. The Federal Government must rise to the challenge of bringing an end to the farmer-herder crisis. (sundiatapost)

Please create 100,000 jobs for Nigerian Youth, not another 100,000 sitter cathedral – Nigerian man begs Oyedepo

As the General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel International, Bishop David Oyedepo is getting set to commence work on a 100,000 capacity church building among other projects, a Nigerian man simply identified as Chinedu has called on the Bishop to use funds for the proposed “100,000 capacity Ark” project to benefit Nigerian youths.

Oyedepo recently  disclosed the commencement of the long-awaited megachurch auditorium project to be carried out by the Church during a Sunday service.

He said; “We are commencing the 100,000 Capacity Ark Project very soon. A new campus for Faith academy.”

The project which involves the demolition of the old Faith Academy, as well as Word of Faith Bible Institute among other facilities, will also include the transformation of a 50,000 capacity (former largest world auditorium) Faith Tabernacle into an overflow facility while a 20 storey tower will also be constructed as the headquarters of the church. The 20-floor tower is to replace the initially planned 12-floor building which was to have been built with the initial Faith Theatre Project in 2015.

Reacting to the proposed building, a Nigerian youth, Chinedu begged Oyedepo to convert the funds to building a 100,000 capacity employment value for Nigerian youth.

Chinedu added that the word of prosperity heard so far can last another 100,000 years and more.

“Bishop Oyedepo, this is an appeal, I am on my knees begging. Instead of building another 100,000 capacity church, please, set up 100,000 employment value for Nigerian youths,” he said.

“Honestly, we have heard the word, as a matter of fact, the prosperity we have heard from you can last us another 100,000 years.

“I beg you in the name of almighty God that you serve, instead of the 100,000 capacity church, give us a 100,000 capacity industry and earn on monthly basis.”

Refering to the other properties owned by the church and Oyedepo, he said he expressed appreciation for jobs created in the “ministry” so far, but he wants more.

“You have a school, is it l and several means of earning a livelihood, not as if peoples are not employed under you, working under your ministry but we can not all work under the ministry,” Chinedu added.

“Your school produces a lot of graduates, now the number of people you school produces have you been able to employ all of them? You are building a capacity church so that every Sunday and other days people will come to donate.

“This is not the time for this, Nigerian need better values than the 100,000 capacity church, even Europeans that brought Christianity did not do like this but we still heard the gospel in Africa.”

Chinedu heald that his request was in the interest of all Nigerian youths.

“I am begging you please instead of 100,000 capacity church, create employment for Nigerian youths,” he added.

“I am sure this is the wish of all Nigerian youth, create 100,000 capacity employment value, not 100,000 capacity church”

Desist from attempting to spark off a civil war – Fani-Kayode Blasts Unongo

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has blasted Chief Paul Unongo over a statement credited to him, warning him to desist from attempting to spark off a civil war.

Unongo was quoted as suggesting to President Muhammadu Buhari to deploy soldiers to the South West to “protect northerners in the region.

Fani-Kayode who stated this via his twitter handle, further warned Unongo to stop testing the will of the people of the South West with such absurd suggestions, adding that the same terrorists he wants to be protected are the same terrorists killing his people and people of Benue.

He further stressed that Northerners are not in ANY danger in the South West.

The tweets read:

The suggestion that Buhari should deploy soldiers to the South West to “protect northerners” by Chief Paul Unongo is reckless, irresponsible and dangerous. Fulani terrorists are killing our people all over the South West and now he wants soldiers to kill us too? Unongo is begging for war!

The worst thing is that the man is not even a Fulani. He is a Tiv man and we in the South West love and respect the Tiv people. We know that they are great and courageous warriors but Unongo is not talking like a Tiv man but rather like an old slave who has lost touch with reality.

The same terrorists that are killing your people are the ones that are killing ours and you want them to be protected? Northerners are not in ANY danger in the South West but Fulani terrorists and killer herdsmen who slaughter, rape, torture and kidnap our people most certainly are.

We make no pretence and have no apology for that. If the state refuses to protect us from terror we have no choice but to protect ourselves. That is perfectly lawful. The only reason you need to worry for your safety in the South West is if you are a killer herdsmen or a terrorist.

We will not tolerate such beasts anymore and we will not allow them to slaughter our people. The overwhelming majority of Fulanis and northerners are not terrorists so they have nothing to fear. Only the wicked run when no-one is pursuing them.

Unongo should know that the Yoruba people are slow to anger but irresistible in battle. Our heads may be bloodied but they can never be bowed. He should stop testing the will of the people of the South West with such absurd suggestions and desist from attempting to spark off a civil war.

He should face his Benue state, help his Governor fight the army of killer Fulani herdsmen that have plagued and overwhelmed the state and leave the South West alone. The Yoruba are not Nigeria’s sacrificial lambs and neither are we slaves. No-one can threaten or intimidate us! (Sundiatapost)

Why Senate must not confirm ex-Service Chiefs as ambassadors – Timi Frank

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Timi Frank, on Sunday, gave reasons the Senate should not confirm ex-Service Chiefs recently nominated as ambassadors.

The nominees by President Buhari are: Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin (rtd), Lt. Gen. Tukur Y. Buratai (rtd), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar (rtd), and Air Vice Marshal Mohammed S. Usman (rtd).

He said that the Senate would be going against its many resolutions when it passed vote of no confidence on the former army commanders over alleged incompetence.

According to him, “the confirmation of the ex-commanders would amount to both chambers of the National Assembly returning to their vomit.”

He listed occasions when the Senate and the House of Representatives had expressly urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the ex-military commanders over “lack of capacity, incompetence and failure to stem the tide of insecurity in the country” to include:

The attack by army personnel on residents of Naka in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State and the beheading of 67 rice farmers by Boko Haram insurgents in Zabarmari community in Jere Local Government Area of Borno State.

Senate’s resolution on a motion sponsored by the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Yahaya Abudullahi, titled: “Nigerian Security Challenges: Urgent Need To Restructure, Review And Reorganize The Current Security Architecture.”

The minority caucus in the House of Representatives again called for the sack of the service chiefs in its reaction to the attack on the convoy of the Governor of Borno State, Baba Gana Zulum, by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, on July 31, 2020.

Frank noted that prominent groups in the country, including the Pan-Yoruba Socio-Political Group, Afenifere, Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development, apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) have, at various times, called or supported calls for the sack of the Service Chiefs over their failure to secure the country – humongous annual defence budgets notwithstanding.

Frank recalled that “President Buhari had passed a vote of no confidence on the ex-military commanders when he told them that their ‘best was not good enough.’”

The Bayelsa-born political activist wondered whose interest the Senate would be serving by confirming what he described as the “failed generals” as ambassadors “in the face of widespread doubt over their competence, capacity and capabilities when they held sway.”

He revealed that “there is a plot to induce each Senator with $100,000.00 each to ensure that the controversial nominees were confirmed” and urged the lawmakers to reject such anti people’s plot.

He said that Nigerians are watching to see how the Senate, especially its opposition lawmakers, will betray the confidence reposed in them by Nigerians “by allowing this potentially egregious confirmation of the ex-military commanders to sail through.”

According to him, “We have it on good authority that they have earmarked funds to the tune of $100,000.00 each per Senator to have their way but the Senators need to show patriotism by rejecting the money and the nominees in the national interest and as true representatives of the people,” he declared. He added that the culprit was incriminated in a leaked video conversation with the bandits.

He said: ’’Yes, he has been arrested and charged to court for conspiracy, aiding and abbetting and terrorism.

‘’But I cannot confirm whether he was the mastermind of Kankara students’ abduction.”

Court temporarily stops re-trial of ex-Gov Kalu in alleged N7.1B fraud, gets leave to challenge re-trial

Orji Uzor Kalu, Sun Publisher.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday ordered that the re-arraignnment of former Abia State governor, Senator Orji Uzo Kalu in an alleged N7.1b money laundering charges be put on hold pending the resolution of the legality of the retrial charges against him.

Justice Ekwo in a ruling in an ex-parte application also granted leave to the Senator representing Abia North, to challenge the legality of the retrial in the same charges.

The Judge agreed that Kalu, Senate Chief Whip, had placed sufficient materials of value before the court to enable him secure permission of court for judicial review of his retrial in charges in which he had been tried, convicted and spent some months in Kuje prison in Abuja.

Justice Ekwo also granted Kalu permission to apply for order of perpetual injunction against the Federal Government through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC to prohibit his retrial so as not to be made to suffer double jeopardy.

Consequently, the Judge gave Kalu seven days within which to file and serve on EFCC all processes he intends to use to challenge the legality of the trial.

The court consequently fixed February 23, 2021 for mention into the matter..

Kalu had asked the Court to prohibit the EFCC from retrying him on the same alleged N7.1B money laundering charges against him.

He contented that having been tried once by EFCC, convicted and sentenced in the same charges FHC/ABJ/CR/56/ 2007, it will amount to double jeopardy for him if he is allowed to be subjected to a fresh trial on the same charges.

In the ex-parte motion moved before Justice Ekwo last Tuesday by his counsel, Profesor Awa Kalu (SAN), Senator Kalu pleaded with the court to rescue him from suffering double jeopardy

He further sought for an order of court prohibiting the Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the EFCC, its officers, servants, others, agents, privies and any other person or bodies deriving authority from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from retrying him on charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007 between FRN vs Orji Kalu & 2 ors or any other charge based on the same facts de novo, there being no extant judgment and ruling of a competent court in Nigeria mandating same.

The ex governor also applied for order prohibiting the Federal Republic of Nigeria, through the EFCC (her agent), her officers, servants, others, agents, privies and any other person or bodies deriving authority from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from retrying, harrassing and intimidating him with respect to the charge as concerns charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/56/2007 between FRN vs Orji Kalu & 2 ors or any other charge based on same facts as he need not suffer double jeopardy.

Kalu further asked that if his application is granted, it should operate as a stay of proceedings until the determination of the application or until the Judge otherwise orders. (Everyday)

Forty Controversial Appointees Into The FCT Magistrates’ Court [FULLL LIST]

— Two Magistrates Allegedly Resigns In Less Than Three Months, Cites Tedious Workload And Inadequate Consent

In order to enhance justice delivery and speedy trials within the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, forty (40) new Magistrates were on December, 2020, appointed and sworn into the FCT magisterium [albeit, under unclear circumstances], thereby bringing the total number of Magistrates at the FCT Judiciary to a total of Eighty-eight [88].

Whilst at the time of their appointment and swearing-in, the names of the supposed magistrates were largely unknown despite calls and attempts to get the full list of the appointed magistrates. TheNigeriaLawyer can however report that it has been able to secure the names of the said Magistrates, and they include:

It is noteworthy that, in less than three [3] months into their Judicial duties, TheNigeriaLawyers have been able to gather from reliable sources that two out of the forty [40] appointed magistrates have allegedly resigned from office citing unfriendly and tedious workload, draining time tasking duties, as well as inadequate consent from [their highly placed] parents before their names were forwarded [by their parents] for recruitment into the FCT Judiciary without an interview.

Recall that sometime in December 2020, TheNigeriaLawyer had reported about the controversial appointment and swearing-in of about forty [40] magistrates into the FCT Judiciary by the then Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Ishaq Usman Bello. A process which has been widely criticized for lacking in transparency, as well as being done outside the known tradition and due process of appointing qualified persons into the Judiciary after subjecting same to public scrutiny.

Fmr NBA Owerri Chair, N.H Nwankwo, Murdered In His Owerri Office

— Personal Driver Still At Large, Together With The Deceased Phones and Car
— Forensic Experts Still Combing For Relevant Evidence And Information, As Earlier Reports Suggests Two Assailants Masterminded The Killing

Former Chairman NBA Owerri branch N.H Nwankwo has been murdered in cold blood by unknown men, TheNigerialawyer, gathered.

According to the information from the Secretary of the branch, Chinedu Agu, the late Nwankwo was killed in his office yesterday.

At the time of the report, his [the deceased] personal driver, who had taken him to the office is still at large, together with the vehicle and some personal belongings of the deceased.

See below the full report:

FROM THE SECRETARIAT OF NBA OWERRI.

N.H NWANKWO, ESQ. MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD!

At about 8.15am today on my way to Church for 8.30am Mass, I received a call from the Chairman of the Bar, J.I Ogamba, Esq. detailing me to liaise with the former Secretary of the Bar, Ishmael Nkwocha Esq., to take Police to N.H Nwankwo & Co. at 43 School Road Owerri, to ascertain the safety of N.H Nwankwo, Esq. who left home for work yesterday Saturday the 6th day of February, 2021 and was yet to return from work.

However, earlier to the call, Ishmael Nkwocha, who shares same office space with him had, in response to frantic calls from his family members over the uncertainty of his whereabouts, gone to his office to meet same locked. On opening the Entrance door, he met Nwankwo’s main office locked and with traces of blood on the door to his (Nwankwo’s) office.

Not very sure of the situation he went to the Homicide Section of the State CID, going with him Forensic Experts from the Police Headquarters to the office to have it properly opened by themselves in order not to contaminate evidential materials.

When the forensic experts arrived at 9:56hrs with their gadgets, they opened the door only for us to find his bulky frame lying lifeless inside his office in a pool of his congealed blood.

On a closer inspection, Nwankwo appeared to have been savagely matchetted by his Assailant, as a very gaping cut was seen on his neck, a monstrous cut of not less than of about 30cm with only about less than 50percent of the flesh in his neck region holding the head.

Blood splashes were seen on the roof, fans, Printer, Computers, table, files, seats, books, bookshelves inside his office suggestive of a ferocious matchetting of his neck.

Nwankwo was suspected to have been busy working as his Printer, Computer, Standing Fan were on while a writing pad containing jottings unrelated to this incident and a Pen were found on his Desk.

A bucket of water was seen in his office, with which the Assailant must have washed his hands and Matchet used in this act.

A search of the office revealed a Matchet abandoned inside the Toilet of his office with which the Assialant was suspected to have used to cut his neck.

When his body which lay half prostrate was turned matchet cuts were seen on his Wrist also and the footprints captured by forensic experts suggested the act was done by two persons as the two footprints were unidentical.

As at the time of this Provisional report, Forensic Experts are still gathering evidential materials for their use accompanied by myself, L.C Ugorji, Uche Osuji, Ishmael Nkwocha, J.I Ogamba, D.O Nosike and a host of other Lawyers.

Meanwhile, his Driver, who reportedly was the only person with him in the office on Saturday, is at the time of this report at large, with Nwankwo’s phones, and Car no where to be found.

Arrangement has just been concluded to take the lifeless body to the Morgue.

This is one death too many; one murder too savage!

Farmer-Herder clash: Group flays Abia police chief over detention of ex-chairman of Abia traditional rulers’ council, 8 others

Abia Commissioner of Police Janet Agbede

From Okey Sampson, Umuahia

A group, Concerned Ozuitem Youths (COY) in Bende Local Government of Abia State has flayed the state Commissioner of Police, Mrs Janet Agbede, over the arrests and detention of the former chairman of Abia traditional rulers council, Eze John Akaliro, another traditional ruler, Eze Sunday Ekebuisi, and seven others over the recent clash in the area between Fulani herdsmen and some unknown persons.

A statement by the leader of the group, Chibuisi Uwa Egwu, claimed that in early January, Fulani herdsmen took their cows to farmlands in Ozuitem and destroyed cash crops.

Egwu said those affected, through their representatives, took the matter to the chairman of Bende local government area, who in turn instructed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to investigate the matter.

He said ever since the villagers made the report, nothing was done until the incident at Onuiyagha last week where some unknown persons clashed with herders and some cows were killed.

The COY leader said last Wednesday, the DPO of Bende allegedly invited those who had earlier reported about the destruction of their farmlands by Fulani herdsmen to Umuahia, including their traditional rulers and president generals, that the commissioner of police wanted to broker peace between them.

Egwu said surprisingly when those invited including the former chairman of the state traditional rulers council, Eze Akaliro and another Eze, Ekebuisi and seven others went to Umuahia, police, in turn, detained them, accusing them of organizing the killings of cows at Onuiyagha near Bende.

COY said it is unfortunate that their people including a first-class traditional ruler are being unjustly detained at state command, Umuahia for no other reason than cows which have been destroying their farms were killed by unknown persons.

‘It is only in this part of the country that a traditional ruler of Eze Akaliro’s standing will be detained by a CP because unknown persons killed some cows. Could a first-class Emir or Oba be detained because of cows?,’ COY queried.

Egwu who said this was a clear case of desecration of the traditional institution, injustice and intimidation against the people of Ozuitem, called on the government to force the herders out of their entire bushes and farmlands so as to assure the safety of their parents as they go to their farms.

CP Agbede could not pick calls put across on her cell phone, neither did she respond to SMS text sent to her. (Sunnewsonline)
