The nature and blessings of forgiveness

“Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us” (Matt. 6:12, GNB)

By Sam Kputu

Ever heard of this popular saying – “to err is human, to forgive is divine”? We all desire forgiveness, even when we don’t deserve it. On the other hand, we all struggle to forgive, even people that desire it of us.

What exactly does God’s divine forgiveness mean, how far does it reach?

¶ It means REMITTANCE of the penalty for sin or wrong

¶ It means REMOVAL of the guilt and shame the goes with the wrong

¶ It means RESTORATION of broken relationship and fellowship with the offender. That is what it means to forgive and forget.

Forgiveness comes from two words: FORE and GIVE. It is something you give ahead of the offence. Before man ever sinned, the lamb was slained (1Peter 1:19-20)

If that is what forgiveness means to God, it must not mean less to us who are His children.
