Poem: The Rule of Law (For Lillian)

By Ode Eyeoyibo

The Rule of Law

The Law of Rules

The Law

The Rules

The Law Rules

Just Laws

Just Law.

Justice
blindfolded and even-handed

But not blind and
unhinged

The Rule of Just
Laws encircling the beloved and empowered community— a Magna Carta

A magma carving
new pathways of establishment

A charter
indicating equality of access before the law.

Telling the law
with stories

Telling stories of
the law

Telling Lord
Denning’s family story alongside all the others.

In many cases

The law is a
donkey

Very unlike the
one who heard the cry of Hosanna!

But that ‘rule of
law’ donkey is all we have in the public domain.

Justice is not for
just us

But for all of us

As we submit to
the rule of law

The rule of just
laws!
