Following an unlawful restriction placed on its customer’s account, A High of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja on 6 April 2023 ordered OPay, a one-stop mobile-based payments and other essential services platform to pay N12M to the customer in question.
Amarachukwu Oti instituted an action against Opay on discovering that he could no longer access his account for any transaction, notwithstanding that there had been no dispute whatsoever with the financial institution.
After making an order directing Opay to remove the unlawful restriction placed on Oti’s account, the court further awarded damages against them in the sum of N12,000,000.00 (Twelve Million Naira).
Opay was equally ordered to make a public apology to the Applicant in any of the national dailies within 6 weeks from the date of the judgment.
