Buharocracy: Know ye the concept?

(Part 4)

Prof. Mike A. A. Ozekhome, SAN, CON, OFR, FCIArb, Ph.D., LL.M, LL.D, D.Litt.

Introduction

The behavior of a man becomes his trademark in the long run. I have been discussing Buharocracy in parts 1 to 3 of this treatise. I had stepped it down to mourn the painful and sudden departure of my elder brother, friend, soulmate, kinsman and confidant, High Chief Raymond Ayaoghena Aleogho Dokpesi, Ph.D, OFR, D.Sc. His death pained me. It still pains me. I have not gotten over it. Will I ever? Perhaps, yes, because I am told time heals wounds. But wounds do heal; yet the scars remain. So, will the scars of Dokpesi’s death ever leave me? I do not know. Or, do you?

I have since been put in the quagmire that Macbeth found himself when, in lamenting the assassination of King Duncan, he had wondered if all the oceans in the world would be capable of washing the innocent blood from his hands. He grieved thus: “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine making the green one red” (MACBETH ACT II, SCENE II). Thank you, William Shakespeare.

Let us take a break from mourning and grieving. Let me continue part 4 of how “Buharocracy put Nigeria in throes”.  Today’s outing is simply a continuation of the surfed internet links of my understanding, definition, plenitude and amplitude of this amorphous form of government called “Buharocracy” (a different negative genre of democracy) I had discussed this amoebic system of government since 2014, even before Buhari became president in his first term. Please, enjoy my humble input into societal transformation and regeneration through the internet. Google indeed does not forget. Kindly read on:

In my next outing, I will take a peep into some specific instances of the use, misuse and negative impact of Buharocracy, instead of democracy.

Ladies, this is how to know your man is through with you

By Funke Egbemode

So, how do you know if you are being dumped or if you are the ‘dumpee’ even this minute? First, let us all agree that not all relationships end up in ‘I do’. Many actually end up in ‘I don’t’. If a man no longer wants to ‘do’, you will do well, my sister, to learn to let him go.

When a man is done with a relationship, he’s done. He may not look like he’s even lacing up his boots, yet he might have left you weeks ago. So, a girl needs to know how to read the signs and what to do. Unlike women who are sentimental about such stuff calling it quits with a relationship that is going nowhere, men are logical beings.

If they want out, they head for the door. Some try to be nice about it, not that I think there’s a nice way to dump a girl, but a man who is through with a woman is through. Trying to stop him most of the time is a waste of time and energy. When a man finds himself in a tight corner, the first person he looks out for is his great self. He may not set out to hurt but that is what happens when someone gets dumped. The dumper is more hurt than the ‘dumpee’, if you get my meaning. I guess that is why the stench from all dump sites is always so terrible. Dumping is simply bad business.

Not that you can stop him if he’s eyeing the door anyway but it is easier on the ‘dumpee’ if she holds a meeting with her heart and head and they resolve not to cause a scene over the dumping.

Here’s one way to know you are no longer what you used to be to your man. He will stop asking for elaborate explanations about your movements. If he used to check on you three times between the time you left the office and the time you got home and all he asks these days is ‘how was your day?’and  then he nicely changes the subject when you attempt to give him the full gist, let the romance light in your head move from green to amber. If you tell him you have a dinner to attend after work and all he says is okay without asking who is hosting the dinner, the venue and what you are wearing, you are losing grip. As far as he’s concerned, you can go jump in the acid lake.

He will also stop giving you elaborate explanations about his life and movements too. If you see a girl in his car and stop him, if he is a nice dumper, he will stop, say hello and tell you he is in a hurry. Note: he did not introduce the girl or tell the girl who you are. Count yourself lucky he stopped and keep the amber light on in your head. You are no longer as important as you used to be. Or did you actually believe the I’m-in-a-hurry story?

If you have already met a few members of his family, put your thinking cap on if you sense unease in the air when next you visit. Watch out for the smiles that do not reach their eyes, the pitying looks and the almost audible sigh of relief when you tell them you are leaving. Poor folks, they like you but the dumper has introduced another girl to them and told them he was done with you.

When a man begins to make himself unavailable and unapproachable, he’s telling the woman who thinks she is still in his life the deal is off. If you were spending the weekends together and now there is always something keeping him busy every weekend, don’t ignore the alarm ringing behind your left ear. You want to go to  his apartment and see things for yourself? Great idea, you will most likely find what you are looking for, your replacement.

If the man who, once upon a time, could not keep his hands and eyes off you behind every closed door (office, car and kitchen doors inclusive) suddenly looks at you in lingerie, adjusts his glasses and returns to his laptop or iPad, you are on your way to the dumpsite, most likely. I’m assuming you had a great sex life, of course. Now, he sees you in the shower and he’s still walking normal, not adjusting his zipper or joining you, ah? There is cause for alarm and concern, believe me.

You used to call each other like 10 times a day and now it has dwindled to one call a day or fizzled out altogether, you are a ‘dumpee’ waiting for certification. That man has moved on, I suggest you do too. Yes, in my capacity as the Chairman, National Assembly Joint Committee on Intimate Affairs.

Tales My Patients Told Me: Let Mama do whatever makes her happy!

By Emmanuel Fashakin

Wednesday, July 12, 2023. Bernice, (not her real name) who has been my patient for about twenty-five years, came in for a medical check-up. You could never hope for a better patient than Bernice. Ever smiling and very pleasant, she never gave the doctors or the staff any trouble.

Bernice is eighty years old but unless you were told, you could never guess her age accurately. She is sharp and witty. Walks steadily and straight. She held down a job well into her late seventies until a few years ago.

Bernice came in with her daughter for medical clearance for cataract surgery. In view of her advanced age, the ophthalmologist wanted to make sure that she was in a good enough physical state to tolerate her surgery. They requested a physical exam, blood tests, and an electrocardiogram on her heart.

Bernice is in great shape for her age. She has a little bit of hypertension, adequately controlled on a single medication, and a little bit of osteoarthritis of the knees controlled by painkillers as needed.

The physical examination was unremarkable. I was about to send Bernice to the Medical Assistant for her blood draw and EKG when I discovered some telltale signs of active cigarette smoking. Bernice was an active smoker many years ago, and she had assured me that she had stopped. That was about fifteen years prior. I had no idea when she resumed smoking.

So I was surprised as I removed the stethoscope from my ears: “Bernice are you back actively smoking again?” “Yes Doctor”, she answered gloomily, I smoke a bit. Maybe like three to five cigarettes a day. I cast a glance at the daughter, standing to my left beside the vaccines storage freezer. She looked down at her feet guiltily, avoiding my gaze.

My thoughts went from disbelief to disapproval and then seeming acceptance within ten seconds. “Take it easy Doc,” I cautioned myself. Bernice is eighty years old, in very good shape for her age, and doing very well. A person cannot live forever; we have to die of something. Let Mama have some fun and enjoy herself.

I turned and addressed the daughter directly: “Let Mama do whatever makes her happy. If she wants to smoke, let her do it.” A smile of relief crossed her face. Bernice herself brightened up quickly. Then I told them my own story.

I left my country Nigeria for greener pastures in the UK in May 1989. By that time my dad’s hustling days were over and he had retired to his house in Akure, Ondo State. It took about eighteen months for me to settle down sufficiently to start sending him money, regularly on a monthly basis, to supplement his meager pension from Lagos City Council.

I visited Nigeria in June 1982, and I was surprised that Papa was not being given the money I sent directly. My siblings held the money and released it only at intervals to the caterer adjacent to his house to prepare food for him. When I asked them why he was not given his money, I was told that he loved to play “Pools” (a weekly betting game based on results of British Soccer Games).

I was furious. Why on earth would you not deliver the money I sent to the old man to him? I immediately ordered them to give his money to him as I sent it, to spend as he wished.

My brother Rotimi (may his soul Rest in Peace) interjected: “To spend as he wishes, including playing pools?” “Including playing pools”, I answered quickly. Rotimi almost fainted. “Why would you indulge Papa to be gambling with his feeding money?”, he asked incredulously.

“I am neither indulging nor encouraging him to gamble, I am only allowing him to do whatever makes him happy in his old age”, I calmly explained. Eventually, we struck a compromise: Papa would be given half of the money to spend as he wished, while the other half would be given to the caterer for his feeding. A smile lit up on Papa’s face. I got the impression that he had more pleasure in pools than pounded yam.

Almost exactly a year to the day, Papa was dead. I reckon that he died a happy man; he probably played one or two bets before he was admitted to the hospital, betting that Aldershot and Grimsby Town would battle to a one-all draw.

As we celebrated thirty years anniversary of Papa’s death two weeks prior to this story, I remembered the above incident, and a smile crossed my face. That decision to let Papa do as he wished, and depart on his own terms, was one of the best things I ever did. You never know how much longer the elderly have.

We cannot live forever. Longevity is good but quality of life is also important. At certain times, when people reach certain ages, you have to let Mama, or Papa, do whatever makes them happy!

Mrs. Olawunmi Nwano is the new Coordinating Partner of the law firm of Alegeh & Co.Alegeh & Co.

Her appointment is a sequel to the exit of the former managing partner, Chief Aikhunegbe Anthony Malik, SAN.

A statement signed by the firm’s founding partner, Augustine O. Alegeh, SAN, dated Friday, July 14, 2023, announced that Mr. Malik, SAN has decided to move on to new challenges in law practice and “there is no doubt that he will excel in all his future endeavours.”

The new Coordinating partner, Nwano is a 2004 graduate of the Faculty of Law, Lagos State University (LASU). She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2005 and joined the Firm in 2013.
She became a Partner in 2019 and has been the Head of the Firm’s Commercial Law Practice Department.

The statement said Mr. Malik left the firm after a period of over 13 years of dedicated service.
“Malik, SAN joined the firm in 2010 shortly after his tour of duty as Special Adviser to the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

“His commitment to hard work led to his appointment firstly as a Partner and subsequently as the Managing Partner of the Firm. In 2019, he was admitted into the inner bar as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

“Malik, SAN contributed immensely to the growth and development of the firm in several ways and will always remain a part of Alegeh & Co. We wish him the very best and the Firm is grateful to him for his years of service,” the statement concludes.

NBA’s alleged indebtedness: We shall not be stampeded, nobody will blackmail us – Maikyau, SAN

  • He does not deny the contents of my letter of resignation – Odinkalu

By Eke Ojim

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, has announced that no person or group of persons will stampede him or the NBA into taking actions that will be detrimental to the Bar.

Maikyau was responding to the allegations made by Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu in his letter of resignation from the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, (ECNBA)

Odinkalu in his 10 July 2023 letter cited integrity issues, NBA’s alleged indebtedness and refusal to pay service providers notwithstanding its solvency, and the several representations the ECNBA made to the Bar President, Mr Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, particularly with regard to the outstanding N5.4 million being owed the company which provided the voting platform (interface) in the 2022 bar elections, as part of the reason for his resignation.

Part of the letter dated 14 July 2023 addressed to Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu reads:

“I acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 10 July 2023 on the above subject. Your resignation will be duly communicated to the National Executive Council (NEC). In the meantime, I thank you for your selfless service to the Bar and wish you success and God’s blessings in all your endeavours.

Please note that the Nigerian Bar Association, which I am privileged to lead at this time and of which you are a member, remains a responsible organization and will always honour its financial and contractual obligations. I will however not allow any person or group of persons to stampede us or in any way blackmail us into compromising our internal mechanisms put in place for verifying claims or requests before payments are made. Our commonwealth which I hold in trust, will to the best of our ability be administered in the best interest of the association.”

Odinkalu’s remarks over the letter were however very crisp. “1 year after the election, the president of the NBA believes he is being ‘stampeded.’ He does not deny the contents of my letter of resignation.”

Here are excerpts from Odinkalu’s letter.

Part of the letter reads;

The integrity of the NBA’s elections is fundamentally dependent on the credibility of two things: the voting platform (interface) and the membership data. The former is outsourced, while the NBA provides the latter to the ECNBA. For the 2022 elections, ECNBA contracted the voting service provision for the sum of N18 million. The organs of the NBA approved this sum as part of the budget for the election.

As I write, N12.6 million of this sum has so far been paid. One year after the elections took place, we still owe the provider N5.4 million, representing 30% of the agreed sum. The Association has not complained about service standards by the provider nor has it declared a contractual dispute. It is not the case that the NBA is insolvent. Yet, despite the best and repeated efforts of the ECNBA, our Association has chosen to not honour this lawful obligation.

Following the failure of any breakthrough in efforts to address this matter with you, my colleague(s) on the ECNBA brought this matter to your attention at the last (virtual) NEC meeting on or about 26 June. But rather than address it in the spirit in which it was raised, you shut it down, complaining that you regretted giving my colleague(s) the floor. That was hardly a vote of confidence on the Committee.

This lingering debt damages the commercial and organizational credibility of the ECNBA and of its membership. The voting platform providers who administered the 2022 elections cannot now be enthusiastic about further dealings with a chronic debtor. The reputation of the NBA as a chronic debtor or as reluctant to comply with contractual obligations will be well known within the small community of providers of such services in Nigeria. This surely raises the bar of difficulty for the next election, which is a mere one year from now.

This difficulty may not be fatal if it were to be the only issue that the ECNBA could confront with regard to the next election, but it is not. As you are aware, on 1 July, 2022, the NBA entered into a contract with a company to, among other things, provide “innovative technology service and work process automation to the NBA.” The deliverables under this contract included “clean up (of) the database of the NBA for accuracy”. This contractor designed and managed the Bar Practising Fee (BPF) payment portal for 2023 which, however, ran into difficulties over allegations of non-fulfilment of contractual obligations by the NBA with regard to fees owed to the contractor. It is my understanding that relations with this contractor may now have broken down irretrievably, that the portal has been deactivated and that the data collected from this portal are not accessible to the NBA because, being indebted to the contractor, it has been denied access to the encryption keys which the contractor can only release after the debts owed to it have been reconciled and cleared.

These facts have multi-dimensional consequences for all streams of work on which our Association’s next elections depend. First, the credibility of underlying data for the next cycle of elections is at best in question with this situation of breakdown in the relationship with the data management contractor. Second, with its commercial credit shot and goodwill damaged, the capacity of the ECNBA to have access to a credible election service provider for the next election is now questionable. Third, these matters of data credibility and commercial credibility cannot be bridged by the ECNBA alone. But fourth, the manner in which you treated the ECNBA’s good-faith inquiry on this and related matters at the last NEC meeting leaves me with genuine doubts as to whether the Committee in fact enjoys your confidence.

Fifth, I must make clear that I do not wish to be mis-interpreted as saying that these developments are compatible with a design to compromise the 2024 election in our Association. Absent urgent course correction, however, that outcome is foreseeable. All that I am willing to say, therefore, is that with one year to go to our next elections, these deficits cannot be bridged by hope or prayer and I just don’t see any plan in place to address these seriously. If anything, the contrary is the case at this time.

I continue to believe that the credibility of elections in the NBA must be sacrosanct. This is the spirit and service compact that persuaded me to agree to serve on this ECNBA. In the light of all the facts at my disposal, however, my only option, Mr. President, is reconsider my position. This is a matter of conscience. I have come to the reluctant conclusion that I can best advance these goals outside the ECNBA and I hereby resign.  Kindly accept, Mr. President, assurances of my fraternal esteem. I wish you well.

I was sexually abused at six, dealing drugs by age eight – Everton midfielder, Dele Alli

Confident and expressive, he has been described as an artist with the ball at his feet. Between 2015 and 2022, he contributed 67 goals and 61 assists in 269 appearances for Spurs but many did know the demons he was battling with.

Born in Milton Keynes, central England to a Nigerian father who left shortly after his birth and an English mother, the former England international and Everton midfielder Dele Alli in an emotional interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap disclosed how he was sexually abused as a child and dealt drugs before he was adopted by an “amazing” family who helped him to turn his life around.

Alli also revealed that he recently spent six weeks in rehab as a result of an addiction to sleeping pills alluding to the deep trauma his troubled childhood caused him.

The 27-year-old said he was sexually abused by a friend of his mother when he was six years old and was dealing drugs by the age of eight.

“At six, I was molested,” he said. “I was sent to Africa to learn discipline. Then I was sent back. Seven, I started smoking. Eight I started dealing drugs.

“Eleven, I was hung off a bridge by a guy from the next estate.

“At 12, I was adopted. And from then, I was adopted by an amazing family, I couldn’t have asked for better people to do what they’ve done for me.”

Alli joined Everton on a two-and-a-half-year deal in February last year in a bid to revive his career after seven years at Tottenham Hotspur. He moved to Turkish side Besiktas on loan for the 2022-23 season and came out of rehab last month.

“It’s been going on for a long time without me realising it, I was doing (sleeping pills) to numb the feelings I had – I didn’t realise I was doing it for that purpose.

“I’ve definitely abused them too much. It got really bad at some points and I didn’t understand how bad it was but I was never dealing with the root of the problem – when I was growing up the traumas I had, the feelings I had and I tried to deal with it all by myself. I lost myself for a few years,” he said.

Alli, who was part of the England team that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-final in Russia
He spent two years in Nigeria with his father as a child before returning to England. At the age of 13, he was taken in by Alan and Sally Hickford.

Everton said they had offered Alli their full support.

“The club has been supporting Dele in both his return to fitness and overcoming the personal challenges highlighted in his interview,” the club said in a statement.

“Everyone at Everton respects and applauds Dele’s bravery to speak about the difficulties he has faced, as well as seek the help required.”

Alli, who twice won the PFA Young Player of the Year award while at Tottenham, is injured at present but could feature next season for Sean Dyche’s Everton.

“I’m feeling good in that sense, probably another few weeks (away from returning from injury) and then get back playing and enjoying football which is what I want to do,” he said.

“So, I’m ready for a big season and I’m more prepared to deal with any challenge that comes with it.”

Officers of the Nigeria Police from the Gender Section of the Lagos State Command have appended four 17-year-old boys, for allegedly conspiring and gang-raping a 16-year-old girl, as well as recording their various sex actions and uploading same on social media.

The young men, Taofik Jimoh, Oduyebo Samson, Adegoke Oluwatimileh, and Adesanya Aduragbemi, have been charged before the Court over their alleged conduct.

The quartet allegedly lured the girl into the apartment on 3rd June 2023, at Oshikomaya Street, Ikosi Ketu area of Lagos State, forcefully removed her clothes, and had sex with her one after the other.

While they engaged her in the callous act, they recorded their various actions with their mobile phones and uploaded the same on WhatsApp platforms and tiktok social media.

Having satisfied themselves, they allowed her to go but warned her not to tell anyone about it and threatened to deal with her if she revealed it to anyone.

However, the girl was unable to bear the trauma, and she revealed what happened to her parents. The matter was reported to the Police and they were arrested. They were later transferred to the Gender Section of the Command for interrogation over their alleged conduct.

After thorough interrogation, the Police found them culpable and subsequently charged them before the Ogba Magistrate Court for defilement, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.

The Court did not take their plea when they were arraigned after the prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, asked the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to DPP.

The matter was adjourned for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.

It was gathered that the matter may likely be transferred to the High Court for defilement if the DPP’s report finds them culpable and recommends their trial despite their age in line with the Criminal Laws of the State.

Babalawo power is no ‘powerless power’

By Abimbola Adelakun

Last month, popular Christian gospel singer Tope Alabi ignited some controversy when she appropriated a greeting associated with babalawos, while singing in a church. Several Christians defended her but did not assuage her critics who insisted she was encroaching. There is a reason Christians do not conduct their services in Arabic, they argued. What I found interesting about the exchange that followed her was how the Christians that habitually condemn practices associated with ìsèse also ransack their wardrobe to extract symbols that will enrich Christianity. The irony of the simultaneous diabolisation and covetousness by those in that category is perhaps best expressed in how they sing that “Babalawo power is powerless power” on Sunday and “àború àboyè” on Monday.

The contradiction of attributing power to indigenous African religious practices even while making a show of denouncing is no different from the other Abrahamic religion in Nigeria: Islam. The recent debacle in Ilorin, Kwara State, expresses how even the dominant religions are still haunted by the order of religious knowledge they demonise as “idolatrous.” You must have read about the incident. An Obatala priestess, Yeye Ajesikemi Olokun Omolara, had circulated fliers announcing a three-day event aimed at celebrating Olokun festival. Then some Muslims accosted her saying the festival cannot hold in Ilorin because their culture is “Islam.”

Honestly, when the news was first reported, my thought was that she was harassed by some miscreants who must be lashing out because the strangulating Tinubu economy had robbed them of legitimate employment. When these men added that they were acting upon the orders of their Emir Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, I still did not believe them. A whole emir cannot be that obtuse, I thought.

It was not until the emir’s spokesperson, one Abdulazeez Arowona, penned a rejoinder to the criticism of Wole Soyinka on the issue that it finally occurred to me that I had been overestimating the reasonability of these people. The article, meant to ridicule the laureate’s intervention in the matter, was such a shabbily conceived and poorly scribbled composition of ill-logic and inelegant ramble. For an article written on behalf of an institution like the emirate, it was either belittling of the status of the emirate or a reflection of the vacuity of the so-called “traditional” leaders. You can convincingly argue it both ways.

Not once did the article offer itself the courtesy of reflecting on the key issues of rightness and legality. Since they have not thought about it, let me put it to them directly: what gives the emir the right to infringe on a Nigerian citizen’s expression of her religious rights? The rejoinder was so thoughtlessly arrogant that it spared itself no time to contemplate that the emir has neither the constitutional or even moral power to declare Yeye Ajisekemi’s celebration of Olokun festival as going beyond her boundaries. Who drew those boundaries and by which authority? The only person overreaching himself here is the emir who mistakes his ceremonial role for constituted authority.

They tried to pass off the emir’s overstepping of his own boundaries too by stating that the festival had to be stopped in the interest of peace. How often have we not heard that same nonsense of asking people to give up their inalienable rights just so that some maniacs would not descend into their characteristic orgy of violence? Meanwhile, in that same gabble the Emir’s letter writer issued, they stated that Ilorin has been so harmonious that some non-indigenes have made the place a home. Some sentences later, they contradicted themselves by saying Yeye Ajisekemi had to be stopped because the celebration of that festival could lead to an outbreak of violence in different parts of the country. So which one is true? Ilorin people are peace-loving liberals or small-minded bigots searching for a reason to set the city on flames? If they are open-minded enough to live harmoniously with their neighbours as he states, why would there be an outbreak of violence simply because another religion staged their festival?

The emir and his letter writer should stop telling themselves that they live in a state of harmony if they cannot trust their people to be mature enough to mind their own religious business. A place where people will potentially kill each other over a festival is a lawless jungle, a dystopia. That is also an indictment of the state governor, the chief security officer of the state. If he cannot control the fanatics in your domain, then over whom does he have any authority?

When Arowona would spoil his Oga’s paltry case pátápátá, he boasted that the emir was an ex-judge, an incorruptible one to boot. Because Nigerians tend to speak of “corruption” in largely economic terms, people like Arowona reductively think of “incorruptibility” as not accepting bribes rather than its larger import as abuse of power or debasement of processes. That was why he could make that logical somersault that ascribed incorruptibility to a judge (a former one, yes) who stopped a religious festival. If Sulu-Gambari could not respect the fundamental human rights of Yeye Ajisekemi to exercise her freedom of conscience, what does it say about the arc of his career as a judge? On what ethics would a man like that have based his professional judgment when something as basic as freedom of worship eludes him? He did not need to have collected money to pervert justice before he could be termed “corrupt.”

Violating the rights of another is “corruption” in itself. Bringing up the emir’s professional past, unfortunately, only highlighted one of the many tragedies of Nigeria: a judge that lacks the concept of justice and a traditional ruler with no regard for tradition. Sulu-Gambari is proof—if you ever needed one—that not even education, not professional training, or even international exposure are enough to cure willful narrow-mindedness. What a shame!

For the emir to have stooped that low to stop an Olokun festival in his domain, he and his council of advisers must have been rattled by the symbolic power of ìsèse practices. All the drama could not just have been because their religion forbids “idolatory.” If it were, they would look away or lock themselves in their houses while the festival lasts. For the emir to disgrace himself this way, it must be because ìsèse rites carry a seductive force that threatens the political and spiritual power he embodies. Unfortunately, he played himself. If he had left the woman alone to do her thing, the festival would have come and gone by now. But, due to their own indiscretion, they are forced into self-justificatory modes. It will not be surprising if the woman starts getting patronage from the city’s inhabitants. Some of the people they thought they shield from witnessing ìsèse will reason that if the festival could bother the emir that much, there must be something to it.

Since this issue started, I have seen a couple of videos by some alfas vituperating over Yeye Ajisekemi’s choice to stage the festival. They based their contention with her on the idea that their city’s ethos has already been ceded to Islam and they will not allow anyone to pollute it with idols. Looking at them reminded me of the reputation of Ilorin as home to some of the most profound Islamic scholars and mystics. Watching some of these people shaking with rage over the Olokun festival was rather demystifying. So, with all their reputation as devoted practitioners and powerful mystics, they were not even secure enough to wave off an Olokun festival in their city as DOA? More intriguingly, it took only one woman with a flyer to unravel their fragility. At this point, Yeye Ajisekemi should be declared a national hero. Just let me hear anyone sing “Babalawo power, powerless power!’ one more time!
