After honeymoon, tales of woe, frustration trail Tinubu’s policies

By Eno-Abasi Sunday

His narrow victory in the last presidential election notwithstanding, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, still looked like he enjoyed a tinge of goodwill from those that elected him. That goodwill appeared to have been squandered by a string of unpopular policies, missteps, and outright blunders committed by the administration. In eight months of his administration, hordes of individuals, professionals, and interest groups have either protested or kicked against some policies enunciated by the government. With grinding poverty and hunger ravaging the land, multinationals leaving, dire forex challenges plaguing manufacturers, and the heavily weakened naira being sold in the black market, ENO-ABASI SUNDAY writes that the recent Idumota Market traders and residents waylaying the president and venting their spleen shows how frustrated and impatient the citizenry is getting renewed hopelessness.

In ancient Rome, the phrase, “Hail Ceasar” was a constant greeting, and acclamation that was meant to show respect and homage to Julius Caesar, the famous Roman general, and statesman. That phrase eventually became a popular expression used to acknowledge someone grandly or respectfully.

During the early Imperial era of the Roman Empire, historian, Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, commonly referred to as Suetonius, wrote in De vita Caesarum that on one occasion, captives and criminals sentenced to death (better known as naumachiarii, while fighting during mock naval encounters—addressed Claudius Caesar thus: “Ave Caesar! Morituri te salutant!”  This means, “Hail, Caesar! Those who are about to die salute you!” all in an attempt to be spared a date with the hangman.

De vita Caesarum meaning, “About the Life of the Caesars,” commonly known as The Twelve Caesars, is a set of 12 biographies of Julius Caesar and the first 11 emperors of the Roman Empire.

Decades after Romans regaled Julius Ceasar with chants of “Hail Ceasar,” history is replete with some political leaders across the world who still bask in such vainglorious lifestyles. Such praise singing notwithstanding, when things go south in such jurisdictions, such leaders are promptly handed the short end of the stick by the same subjects that chanted their praises.

Only 10 months ago, then candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Bola Tinubu, took Lagos by storm during his electioneering. He rode the crest and his followers added to the wind in his sail with their intermittent chants of “Jagaban Borgu,” “Asiwaju of the universe,” and “Akanbi,” which appeared to be the newest nickname that his supporters gave to him.

Market women and men abandoned their shops and stalls (even though some alleged compulsion) to facilitate a grand entry of “City Boy,” to Lagos City. Expectedly, major roads turned into a sea of heads, and a morass of colours.

But eight months after he won the presidential election, the scenario is gradually changing and the cheers and praises gradually drying up. The Friday, December 29, 2023, incident, where Tinubu was waylaid and screamed at by traders and residents of the famous Idumota Market, as he glided past them in a more than 20-car convoy lends credence to this.

President Tinubu acknowledged cheers from supporters as Lagosians shout as his convoy drives through Idumota. Photo: angelnetworknews

Yelling at the top of their voices, in Yoruba, the distraught Nigerians repeatedly screamed: “Ebi npa wa o,” meaning “We are hungry.”

In the trending video on X, formerly Twitter, the traders evenly distributed on both sides of the road, even with the presence of fully armed security operatives, shelved the vociferous hailing that they usually shower on Tinubu whenever he drove past in the past.

Besides decrying the pangs of hunger ravaging them, they strongly deplored the hardship and trauma, which they alleged is foisted on them by the policies, and programmes of the eight-month-old APC-led government.

Apart from openly criticising the large convoy of the president, they alleged that Tinubu knew what they had up their sleeves, the reason that the market was flooded with security operatives ahead of his passage.

Tinubu, who was in the state to celebrate the 2023 Christmas was on his way to the Lagos Central Mosque, in Lagos Island, for the Jumat Service.

Interestingly, in the troubling situation that the country has found itself in, Tinubu, his spokespersons, and sundry assigns have intensified trumpeting the supposed dividends that policies so far enunciated have brought to the country. But hard as they try to sell that narrative, evidence on the ground constantly counters their claims.

According to stakeholders, the economic crises that have engulfed the country since Tinubu came on board in May 2023, are beginning to “make the largely horrendous eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure” to look like a child’s play judging from unfolding scenarios.

With headline inflation standing at 28.20 per cent, and food inflation at 32.84% per data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBC), as well as, the World Bank raising Nigerians’ hopes that the economic crises would gradually ease this year, many are still peeved that while citizens are highly impacted by atrocious happenings in government circles, the president, until Tuesday, January 10, appeared unbothered travelling the country and the world with an army of aides.

It was amid widespread insecurity, and shrinking jobs that NBC revealed that the country suffered a 33 per cent investment decline to $1.03 billion in Q2 of 2023 compared to the $1.54 billion recorded in Q2 of 2022. In-country production fared no better as the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), in its half-year economic review said that its members spent over N60.4 billion to ensure the availability of alternative energy between January and June 2023, a development that was 21.25 per cent lower than the N76.7 billion it incurred within the same time in 2022.

The pathetic power situation in the country contributed immensely to the operating loss recorded last year by MultiChoice, a South African broadcasting services provider, which last November announced a $72.4 million operating loss. It blamed the loss largely on exchange constraints and prohibitive energy costs.

The harsh operating environment has not spared the scalp of many outfits, including multinationals that are either lamenting or have packed their baggage to depart the shores of Nigeria. Among those hit by the inclement business environment are telecommunications companies, MTN Nigeria, and Airtel, both of whom have announced $ 232.8 billion, and $247.3 billion setbacks in forex-based transactions in that order.

The ruptured interior of the country’s economic milieu, experts also say, is already costing the country about 6, 000 jobs from the confirmed departures, scaled-down operations, or change of business modules so far announced by the following pharmaceutical outfits- GlaxoSmithKline, and Sanofi-Aventis, as well as, Jumia Food and Bolt Food, which are the food subsidiaries of online ride-hailing outfits. Other outfits that are in this category are consumer goods giants, Procter & Gamble PZ Cussons, and Equinor, a Norwegian oil and gas concern.

Grief, hopelessness, and frustration persist across country
Since taking the reins, ululation has continued to emanate from different parts of the country with individuals and groups wailing over the soaring cost of living, worsening quality of life, in addition to mindless killing of innocent Nigerians by non-state actors.

Barely one week ago, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) told President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that Nigerians are yet to experience the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration, asserting that their hopes have been dampened in the face of the current parlous economy.

The TUC in a 10-point demand from the current administration this year, which was contained in its New Year statement, signed by its president and secretary general, Festus Osifo, and Nuhu Toro, stated that the outgone year was one long, excruciating litany of lost opportunities and dashed hopes.

Among the demands, it said all agreements between labour and government, including payment of monthly N35,000 wage award to public servants in local, state, and federal services, must be implemented until a new national minimum wage is implemented.

The union demanded that inflation, which is currently at 28.20 per cent, must be drastically reduced to sub-Saharan Africa’s regional average of 9.4 per cent.

It said government at the state and federal levels should stop the “unnecessary, economically unwise and unpatriotic tradition of taking loans, especially when the loans only end up being used to purchase expensive jeeps for legislators, pamper members of the executive and their spouses, or in building unnecessary offices and purchasing mundane and sundry things, including stationeries.”
The TUC, which urged the government to end “its ill-advised devaluation of the national currency that is the precipitating collapse of local industries, which need foreign exchange to import raw materials,” also advised that the high price of PMS at N617 per litre should be drastically reduced to undo the harm to the national economy.

Before the latest TUC stance, it had alongside other professional groups protested the rising cost of living in the country.

One of the earliest groups of protesters to kick against economic hardship in the country was a group of women in Kano who insisted that their existence was threatened by the alleged Federal Government’s insensitivity to the gnashing of teeth in the country.

‘We’re not politicians, but suffering traders anguished by systemic rot’
Shortly after the Idumota Market ambush, some APC apologists insist that the traders’ actions were politically motivated to embarrass the president, but Ruth Adeyemi, a trader at the market said that hypocritical comments like that explains why the country is today in a quagmire.

She said: “We are not politicians, political appointees or party men or women that take delight in keeping the truth away from the president. Of course, those that were yelling at him are disappointed with his performance in office so far. His appointees, who feed fat at the country’s expense are the ones that are not scandalised by the president’s poor performance, and the proliferation of hunger and hardship.

“I import lace from Switzerland, and I have six shops in this market, but what we are facing in this country is a tragedy. Nigeria charges about the highest amount of money to clear a single 40-foot container, yet you scarcely would find where all these monies are going. How do you encourage businesspeople, especially SMEs? Because of the hunger in the land, the mouths that I need to put food in have quadrupled, while sales have plunged because the populace has been financially emasculated by the government.”

But does Adeyemi believe that the actions of the traders can change anything? Adeyemi said: “It may not, but it will open a new window for Tinubu to view the plight of traders in particular and citizens in general because we the masses bear the brunt of the shenanigans committed by those in government.”

Mr Ejike Ugonna, another trader in the market, who deals on household utensils said that no country should condone the unnecessary display of wastage exhibited over time by past and present Nigerian leaders. “The action of the traders and residents, for the umpteenth time, reechoed the hunger that has continued to afflict the people since Tinubu got into office. During the campaign expressed worries when Tinubu said that he would continue with the legacy of the General Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. How do you say such when you knew what Nigerians were going through, especially in the horrific management of the country’s economy, security, and diversity among others? What is going on should not surprise us all because we all witnessed him make the promise.”

Ugonna continued: “Till today, gunmen are still slaughtering thousands of innocent Nigerians in Kaduna and Plateau states; the Nigeria Air Force, which Buhari commanded bombed innocent Nigerians from time to time. This is still happening with Tinubu as the commander-in-chief. To the shame of the giant of Africa, Nigerians were buying naira in the black market and banks. The situation is the same under Tinubu. So, tell me what exactly has changed. The country endured a largely horrendous eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Sadly, it may not be different under Tinubu. So, for those that are thinking that traders were sponsored to tell Tinubu the truth, many of such scenes could be playing out if the political class continues to take citizens for a ride.”

Adebayo

While the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last general election, Prince Adewole Adebayo, believes that the Federal Government has what it takes to ascertain whether the Idumota incident was sponsored to embarrass the president, he stressed that none of the views expressed by the traders is false.

He stated: “Nothing chanted by the Idumota crowd is false, insulting, or should be strange to Mr. President who ought to know already that people are quite hungry, especially given the economic numbers we see daily, and the long queues of people at the private residence of the president seeking basic nutritional and other help. I’m not the President yet, but I must have received a minimum of 5,000 people in my residence in Ondo who came uninvited for help and nutrition during the holidays. The message has been passed. Those that made up the Idumota crowd are not even the hungriest. Those who came to my home in Ondo and others who sent messages to me would like President Tinubu to know that people are truly hungry. How the President chooses to respond to the message might be a positive turning point or the ultimate embarrassment. There is nothing more embarrassing than a hungry stomach. Saving a presidential face or soothing his ego is secondary.”

For the National Publicity Secretary of Youth Party, Ayodele Adio: “To suggest that traders were paid to express their grievances is to make a mockery of the pain that many of them are coping with. I’m not sure most people in government realise how difficult it is for people to survive with food inflation at over 30 per cent, close to a 300 per cent rise in the cost of transportation, etc. Most people can no longer afford medicines and food and have zero disposable income or savings.

“The future for many appears bleak, and people in government can’t appreciate this reality because the state takes care of their immediate needs. So, it is uncharitable to suggest that they were paid. We are lucky that all they did was cry out because, in many other countries, it would have gone beyond just crying for help especially if their leader appeared insensitive and live in opulence.”

Adio

Most Nigerian politicians, highly venerated, poor in delivery
For the entire period that the country has experienced a downward slide, members of the political class have been living with aplomb. Sadly, their hapless followers are the ones who suffer from the sheer ineptitude displayed, looted resources, and horrible policies that have brought the country to its knees.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, aptly describes the scenario as “a harvest of woes and betrayals for Nigerian workers and people. This is essentially because Nigerian politicians have largely not lived up to expectations. Most of the time, it is more hype and propaganda than effective action to perform and deliver benefits to the citizenry.

“Leadership is about putting the interests and desires of Nigerians at the heart of governance effort. Anything short of this is voodoo. Only very few political officeholders are committed to making the lives of Nigerians better and that is sad. Everything is therefore sacrificed at the altar of politics, propaganda and driven by unfortunate primordial sentiments.”

According to the Youth Party publicity scribe, Adio: “In less than a decade, at least 13 multinationals have folded up, leaving behind job losses across a long value chain because it is not only their direct staff that are usually affected, but several other companies that provide critical services like law firms, tax and audit firms, marketing agencies, security agencies and so on. The job losses are enormous, just as the loss in technical and managerial capabilities. These multinationals often transfer skills and know-how that develop our human capital and expose them to global best practices. Unfortunately, as these organisations leave, a huge capacity void is created that is difficult to replace. These job losses are dangerous for a country with high unemployment and poverty rates, and we must do all we can to reverse this ugly trend.

“Worth mentioning is that the reason for these job losses is obvious and redeemable. On the one hand, the cost of doing business (especially the cost of energy) is making it difficult to many organisations to remain competitive. Equally, the dwindling purchasing power of citizens has greatly affected consumption, and so these companies are left with unusually high levels of unsold goods. Hence, if we can fix local productivity, then there is a good chance that we would attract more factories and multinationals, create high-paying jobs and grow the economy.”

Incessant outcry by groups, and individuals as telltale signs of poor governance
For the former SDP flag bearer, Adebayo, macroeconomic stabilisation is the most important paradigm that government policies must provide for business growth.

According to him: “The Nigerian economy lacks that because we lack a government that understands the economic landscape enough to recognise the need for stable growth and appreciates the opportunities that are begging to be harnessed. Therefore, factor price instability, hyperinflation, runaway devaluation, and unpredictability will serve businesses and their consumers short. Many companies will be forced to shut down, especially in the absence of robust infrastructure. However, economic cycles and dynamic market realities would still lead to be closure of some businesses as a result of the realities of global market conditions and competition. It appears as if the majority of business difficulties relate to macroeconomic instability whilst a minority is due to global market conditions.”

NLC President, Joe Ajaero

Ajaero aligns with Adebayo in affirming that, “creating the right environment for businesses to thrive is a critical factor that encourages both foreign and local investors to plough more of their resources into the nation’s economy. Any measures, therefore, by the government, which ought to have that as one of its major responsibilities is a step in the right direction and it does not matter whether it is in the short term or the medium term.

Unfortunately, most of the policies of the government negate this principle, which has made it difficult for Nigeria to attract new critical investments, which would have created new workplaces, and new jobs and help reduce unemployment. The creation of an effective and positive business environment is a deliberate and strategic action that ought to be weighed and driven to achieve the desired objectives.”

However, the trio of Adio, Ajaero, and Adebayo, think that Tinubu announcing a 60 per cent reduction in his entourage, that of his vice and the First Lady during local and international trips is a step in the right direction, but not enough to curb the significant wastage in government.

Said Adio: “Anything to save cost, cut waste and make the government be prudent or appear so, is a positive development, and should be commended with a caveat that such modest changes are not enough and more should be done. Government spending needs a holistic overhaul…”

Adebayo said: “I think it is a step in the right direction. Government trips should not be turned into excursions, especially when citizens are bearing the cost. I must also commend the president for listening and demonstrating a willingness to make amends where there’s a genuine public outcry, or in the face of a superior argument. The cost savings from a reduced entourage might not be as significant but the symbolism is important – because if the president says we are in this together, then he must show that we are truly in it together.”

On his part, Ajaero said: “The announcement of the reduction is an admission of the inherent error in making such humongous provisions for travels in the first place. We have talked of the need for the government to take deliberate steps to reduce the cost of governance, which we believe will improve the government’s fiscal position freeing more funds to be used to serve the citizens. Reduction in travel expenses is therefore a welcome development if it is genuinely pursued as it speaks to the quest to lower the cost of governance. However, the worry is that what the government seeks to do amounts to a drop of water in the ocean as it does not make any significant impact. Moreover, these funds have already been appropriated for in this year’s budget so, it may just be the usual hot air that may not be implemented at the end of the day.

Regarded by his followers as the master strategist behind Buhari’s last-ditch success at the polls after a string of failures, Tinubu appears to have dug himself so early into a hole that he is presently gasping for both ideas and breath hence the need to deploy a magic wand before his followers, and indeed Nigerians replace “Hail Ceasar” with “jail Ceasar.”

Federal government cannot escape the consequences of its agents wrong decisions

By Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, SAN

Yesterday, the 12th day of January 2024, the Supreme Court delivered judgments in the governorship involving elections to the offices of the Governors of Plateau and Kano States. There were other appeals whose judgements were delivered also. But that of the Governors of Kano and Plateau States stood out more for obvious reason

In these two states the trial Tribunal nullified the election of the Governor Kano State, and the same was affirmed by the Court of Appeal while that of the Governor of Plateau state the Court of Appeal nullified the election of the Governor after the trial Tribunal dismissed the petition against election of the Governor.

Appeals of these two governors had generated so many passions and anger not so much because these governors were the best, but reasons given by the Court of Appeal in nullify their election did not go down well with the people, as the choices of the people were truncated by the court of Appeal.

Now that the Supreme Court has faulted the decisions of the Court of Appeal regarding these Governors one is tempted to ask if its still reasonable and advisable to make the Court of Appeal the final Court in electoral matters concerning elections to Parliament at both the Federal and state levels.

While it is conceded that the docket of the Supreme Court is too loaded with many cases, I do not think the solution to too many appeals in the Supreme Court does not lie in making the Court of Appeal in appeals arising from Nation Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.

As it stands today apart from presidential and governorship appeal that go to Supreme Court in electoral disputes, all other appeals in election petitions end at the Court of Appeal as provided in section 246 of the 1999 constitution.

As it is today, any member of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly whose election has been nullified on the grounds that the appeal the governor of Plateau State was allowed today stood no chance of immediate remedy as there is no further right of appeal.

The decisions of the Supreme Court today in these two cases call for the judiciary to be very careful in the way and manner the judiciary treats the concept of judicial precedents or stare decisis. Adherent the principles of respecting decisions of the superior court by the Court below the Supreme Court, which is the Court of Appeal, is crucial for the stability and predictable outcome of litigation.

The Supreme Court has done well today. But for me, some decisions of the Court of Appeal and even sometimes those of the Supreme Court that tend to undermine the perceptions of the public who are the ultimate consumers of justice is the reason why people are speculating undercut arrangements in these judgments of our courts.

I think the law limiting the right of appeal in parliamentary election petitions to the Court of Appeal needs to be thoroughly looked into as the Court of Appeal, in some cases, seems to be persuaded by reasons not rooted in justice and loyalty to judicial precedents.
The decisions of the Court of Appeal in the parliamentary election petitions appeal to it, it been, the final court has inflicted monumental injuries to the sovereignty of the people.

Are those who were sacked on the basis of the facts that led to two appeals in these two cases been allowed without any remedy?

I do not think so. Where there is a wrong, there must be a remedy. This is a popular legal jargon. Those lawmakers removed on grounds, which the Supreme Court said is outside the jurisdiction of the trial Tribunal and the Court of Appeal should not go home without remedies given to them by the judiciary which is an arm of the State.

They have remedies. Judges cannot be sued, but the state FGN employed these judges who wrongly removed these lawmakers of Plateau States. These judges worked for FGN pursuant to section 285 of the 1999 constitution. These judges are agents of disclosed principal. The FGN, their principal, cannot escape the consequences of the wrong decisions of its agents who acted without jurisdiction that inflicted injuries on the earned rights of these lawmakers from Plateau State.

FCT authorities allegedly plot five percent tax on students in private schools

A proposal by the authorities in Abuja’s department of education to charge a 5% tax on tuition fees for students in private schools is infuriating proprietors, and promises to set off anger in residents bogged down by the harsh economic terrain, worsened since President Bola Tinubu took over the reins of power seven months ago.

A memo of the meeting between school proprietors and officials of the Department of Education and other stakeholders, according to a report by Everyday.ng, tagged, IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO ALL PRIVATE SCHOOLS, reads thus:

“Good morning, noble colleagues. You might have heard that we have been holding a series of meetings with FCTA Education Secretariat and other Private School Association on a proposed new system of charging DQA annual dues.

“Below is the brief for your information and reactions:

“1. Education Secretariat and DQA (department of quality assurance) are proposing a new system of charging private schools annual dues as against the current system that sees schools of different categories pay fixed amounts to DQA annually between N75,000 and N300,000 per annum.

“The new system is that they will now charge 5% of the tuition fee per child every term. What this means is that if your tuition fee is N200,000 termly, you will pay N10,000 per child multiplied by the number of school children in your school. For instance, if you have 300 pupils, you will pay N10,000 x 300, which gives N3,000,000 per term and N9,000,000 per annum as against N250,000 such school is currently paying as annual DQA levy.

“2. The last meeting we had with the Education Secretary, some of us demanded the total cancellation of such the proposed policy, and the suggestion did not go down well with the Education Secretary.”

He said he had expected us to appeal for a reduction from 5% rather than an outright cancellation of the policy. He then requested that another meeting be held next week between us (Abuja Joint Private School Associations) and Education Secretariat.

3. Before the proposed next meeting, we, the representatives of the Abuja Joint Private Schools Association, met yesterday … and came up with some resolutions as will be posted shortly.

Last night, Everyday.ng could not reach relevant government officials as the proprietors are considering a mobilisation exercise to bring residents into the loop of protests.

Lately, the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) has unleashed a barrage of income generating exercises that have been raising the temperament of residents.

One of such is the increase of official fees to procure land and pay others fees.

The reaction from membership of proprietors association has been fast and furious, as captured below and sent to our reporter last night. They are reproduced below:

● Only wicked, irresponsible, and unreasonable hearts would have this idea in a time like this. It is very unfair and should be resisted, please.

● This is just too much to handle, but God, in his infinite wisdom, will grant our leaders the best possible way to go about it and a successful outcome.

We outrightly reject such an unbelievable and dangerous weapon used only against the private education sector.

It’s high time we stood firm against any form of discrimination and oppression from our supposed education ministry.

May God fight for us?

● “5% per child per term tuition fee as annual FCT Education Secretariat/DQA due”. Pls throw some light on this DQA. Is this an institution of government? Do they receive salaries n subvention from govt? What value does this body add to school owners? Do we need them? The annual dues of #75k we duly pay them are now inadequate. On no condition will a kobo be added to the annual due! Why are these institutions bent on the strangulation of private schools! Why can’t we go to court to stop these?

● These people are just criminals. I want to believe leadership has been changed and the new people are coming with a devise to make money. The dues we have been paying , what have they done with it? What support has DQA given to us?

They want to get 5% from our revenue but what happens to our costs of running the school? Are they now shareholders or what? Even shareholders share from losses! Do they even care about education in Nigeria? Private schools are social enterprises!

To think that we have been struggling to put our schools together amidst this economic situation is worrisome and frustrating! Or do they expect us to transfer the burden on the parents who are already struggling to pay? I still can’t get it. They are government agencies, for God’s sake. They should be more concerned about social benefits!

I think we need to call them out as someone suggested!

● What is the basis of such a charge. They just do things arbitrarily and only end up mismanaging the revenue. I am not sure they have a clue what schools go through each time fees are increased. They should not even go there oo!

Dismissed Inspector of Police earns 30 years jail for shooting teenager to death

A dismissed Police Inspector, Haruna Ocheni has earned himself a 30-years jail term from a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Zuba, for killing a 17-year-old boy.

Having been charged with culpable homicide not punishable by death, Hon. Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya on Friday, January 12, sentenced the murderous Inspector to 30 years imprisonment.

Justice Ogbonnaya in her verdict held that the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, adding that Ocheni had no legitimate reason to be in the deceased’s house at the time of the incident.

Pointing out that as an Inspector of Police of over 29 years in service, Ocheni should know the rules of his profession, Her Lordship noted that:

“He did not deny using the rifle and confirmed the release of two bullets from it. The shots were fired with the knowledge that it could lead to death.”

Earlier, the deceased’s father, Gabriel Chikezie, while being led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Adama Musa, told the court that Ocheni shot and killed his son.

Chikezie said his deceased son stole a generator from his home in Kubwa, Abuja, on March 15, 2020 and he decided to call his neighbour, Pastor Ocheni, to help me with a policeman to recover the generator.

He said he contacted Ocheni whom came to his house with a rope, tied both of his son’s hands and dragged him.

He added that while his son resisted, Ocheni hit him on the head with a weapon and then shot him.

Chikezie further said that he took his son to the Kubwa General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Inside account of how Islamic cleric, Hassan Patigi tortured persons seeking spiritual help (II)

By Yunusa Umar

On July 23, 2023, this reporter travelled to Bukka village, a few kilometres away from the headquarters of Mokwa to meet an old-sick woman who was accused of witchcraft in Central Nursery and Primary School Mokwa (Yeko Rabba).

This reporter and his fixer alighted at the village at exactly 2:56 pm. When inquiring about the location of the Nnaba’s house, an old-sickly woman accused of witchcraft by Hassan Patigi, a middle-aged man selling black market petrol told this reporter that Nnaba had died.

“She died, not long after she returned from Mokwa.”

This reporter requested to speak to the victim’s relatives, but he denied knowing any of them. After persuasion, he directed the reporter to the victim’s brother called Alhaji. The brother didn’t want to narrate his late sister’s ordeal to WikkiTimes. He said he had forgotten about the matter and surrendered the case to God the Almighty.

Before her death, the sick woman battled with infectious diseases over her body. Nnaba visited the faith healer, seeking help over her aged-long disease but was accused of witchcraft and shamed publicly.

“Immediately I learnt that my sister, who went to Mokwa to seek healing for her illness, was accused of witchcraft by Hassan Patigi, I phoned someone in Mokwa, pleading with him to rescue her from the mob and God’s willing, she came home alive,” he said.

Patigi tried to coerce the ailing woman into admitting she was a witch, but she refused to make such a declaration, WikkiTimes learnt.

The victim’s brother declined to provide further information, stating that the family had entrusted their concerns to the supreme creator. “I won’t comment on the issue, but we surely belong to Allah, and to Him, we shall return,” he said.

He said the family had moved on since the departure of his sister, asserting that the Creator would ultimately judge everyone’s actions.

Similarly, in the same year, Hajiya Hawau Umar, who suffered from rheumatism in her shoulder, was accused of witchcraft. Patigi’s guards, armed with his healing water, stripped the alleged victim naked and subjected her to beating.

The woman later told WikkiTimes that she sought relief for her constant pain at Patigi’s healing centre. However, she was accused of intending to bewitch and kill the monarch.

The alleged victim’s in-law, Kawu Sadu, who spoke before the victim, explained the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to Sadu, the victim suffered from rheumatism in her left shoulder and had hoped that her sickness would disappear after seeking help from Hassan Patigi.

“When Hassan came to Patigi, the victim travelled to Patigi but couldn’t see the marabout due to the crowd in his centre,” he said. A young man from their community, who worked with Hassan Patigi, witnessed the alleged victim’s struggle to meet the marabout and later facilitated her entry in the presence of their monarch.

A victim

Excited to meet the marabout in the presence of their emir to alleviate her shoulder pain, the victim was instead accused of witchcraft and plotting to kill their monarch.

“Hassan came to the emir’s palace of Etsu Umar Bologi II to attend to royal families only, but Hajiya was at the palace door,” Sadu explained. Hassan’s guard, who promised to facilitate their meeting, ushered her inside the palace.

Unlike other victims who spoke with trepidation, Hajiya Hauwau Umar confidently shared her ordeal with WikkiTimes, stating that she was falsely accused and labelled a witch in the presence of their monarch in Patigi.

Despite her defence, Hassan accused her of being a witch and ordered his guards to detain her.

However, the emir intervened, instructing that she should be set free since she claimed not to be a witch. On her way out of the palace, Hassan’s guards seized her phone, limiting her ability to contact her family. She recounted being stripped naked, while seven guards threw water sachets at her.

She was then dragged to the stage naked where Patigi’s guards continued to pelt her with water.

In addition to Hawau, Hassan Patigi was reported to have subjected numerous accused witches to public nudity, thereby violating their human rights and subjecting them to a series of tortures, as gathered by WikkiTimes. Furthermore, he allegedly compelled the victims to engage in continuous physical combat with each other until they were exhausted. These actions highlight a disturbing pattern of abuse and infringement on the basic rights of those accused of witchcraft under Hassan Patigi’s influence.

On December 20, 2017, the National Assembly enacted a federal law (Anti-torture Act) that criminalised all forms of torture. The act was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Stripping a person naked is described as a torture. The act prescribes punishment for any law enforcement agent that stripes any person naked. It also prescribes punishment for heads of unit/departments where a person was stripped naked as well as for any officer that watches such acts. By federal law, the punishment for stripping any person naked (or any other form of torture) is imprisonment for not more than 25 years without an option of fine.

Subsequently, the victim was returned to her ancestral home. However, she faced ongoing challenges, nearly losing her senses whenever she ventured outside her house. The faith-healer was compelled to publicly seek her forgiveness on his stage in the Mokwa community of Niger State.

Reflecting on her ordeal, she expressed, “My health condition became so critical that it affected my children emotionally.” She has since been undergoing medical checkups regularly since the traumatic incident occurred.

“When I went to the hospital, I was prescribed drugs to reduce rheumatism pain,” she said.

Usman Salihu, a photographer who had previously covered the activities of the self-proclaimed Islamic teacher, confided in WikkiTimes that unhealthy individuals were never healed by the marabout, contradicting the healer’s claims.

“He was not able to heal anyone. Anyone who says he healed or did anything out of the ordinary is a liar,” Salihu stated, describing the marabout as a charlatan. According to Salihu, the marabout was a psychopath and had even claimed to be mad for 25 years. He expressed astonishment that many people did not recognise the madness evident in the marabout’s utterances, behaviour, and mannerisms.

Salihu, who had filmed Patigi’s activities, eventually withdrew his presence from the Patigi centre after witnessing the torture of an elderly woman accused of witchcraft with a stun-gun.

“The old woman who was tortured should have been an octogenarian, and the extent of the torture was unimaginable,” he said, adding that Hassan Patigi had surrounded himself with numerous heartless individuals who appeared normal but actively participated in torturing innocent people, contributing to his perceived invincibility.

According to Salihu, “He was practising as a marabout in Liberia before he came to Mokwa to defraud people and subject innocent people to embarrassment and torture.” This revelation sheds light on the marabout’s dubious history and the extent of the harm inflicted on unsuspecting individuals in the community.

Hassan Patigi, Salihu told this reporter, could not recite Quranic verses coherently yet, he claimed to be a scholar.

“I have not met anyone who lies as much as he does. He lied against me too and almost caused a fight between me and my paternal uncle and his children,” he said.

Checks by WikkiTimes reveal that Hassan Patigi is not actively working as a marabout. His miracle centre was filled with emptiness of unhealthy and healing people when this reporter visited his residence in Patigi on 20th July.

‘Shamed, tortured, human rights violated’

On August 2, this reporter embarked on a journey to Lachin, a suburb village under Enagi of Edati Local Council of Niger State, arriving at exactly 11.19 am in the morning.

The fixer who scheduled time to meet the alleged witches warned this reporter to desist from visiting the village as this reporter had to traverse through a river to meet the victims but our reporter insisted on speaking to the victims.

“We can call him to cross over the river to this place”, he said, fearing that the villagers might react violently when approached over the matter.

With fear, he pointed to where this reporter and his team would later cross to the other part to speak with the victim. A ferry-boat was on the river where a young paddler, Liman, ferried us to the other side.

“When it rains heavily now, the flowing river becomes too much to handle and we charge commuters N100, N200 and above,’’ he said, while paddling the wooden-boat.

He added that the flowing water had damaged plantations in the past.

Mohammed Abubakar, who was accused of witchcraft, had finished praying when this reporter met with him in his parlour. The victim narrated his ordeal that he was wrongly accused of witchcraft.

“I was lied against. I wasn’t the only one accused of witchcraft,” he told this reporter.

When asked whether they were taken to Hassan’s miracle centre in Mokwa, he replied, “Yes, of course, and he persecuted us.”

He feared to disclose many details to this reporter but said their monarch’s son was sick and probably suffering from typhoid fever.

“The village head’s son was sick and was mentioning my name. So, his father said that I was bewitching his son. I wasn’t the only one accused. We were two,” he added.

The two victims were later told to visit Hassan Patigi in Mokwa to attest whether they bewitched the village head’s son or not.

On reaching the faith-healer’s centre, the faith-healer had said witches and wizards would dance whenever music was played. But the aged father didn’t dance afterwards.

“When we got there, we were told that when music is played witches and wizards dance to it,” he told WikkiTimes in fear with his body shaking. “When music was played, I said to them, “why would I dance when I’m not a wizard.”

Hassan later said those who brought him to the marabout’s healing centre said he was full of pride. The faith-healer later violated the alleged victims’ human rights by subjecting them to inhumane torture and stripping them naked in public.

“Those who brought me to his place were saying that I was full of pride. And then, Hassan started throwing a sachet of water at me,” he said.

“When he was about to ask us to go, he asked me to urinate in my partner’s mouth.

“When I told him that I don’t feel like urinating he asked me to lie down and have my partner urinate in my mouth. Some people there were beating me with sticks. I’m not a wizard,” he said.

The accused has been left to bear the brunt of torture subjected to him by the divine-healer. No organisation or group has been firmly standing for the victims to seek justice for them. The aged victim told this reporter to stop filming him, pleading to record only his words.

In the gripping tale of surviving the grief suffered by Hassan Patigi in Mokwa area, the victim narrated that his health has not been the same. His eye is visionless by the torture caused by the marabout, his body also still gripped in pain.

“My health is in critical condition but what can I do now?” he asked this reporter. “I have left whatever the case may be in the hands of the supreme creator. God has a solution to everything.

“I didn’t expect such a thing would happen to me. Only God knew how I was dehumanised and tortured in Mokwa. I was raised on the shoulder while the other person was stripped naked,” he told WikkiTimes with his eyes filled with tears.

The victim’s son, Jibrin Mohammed Lanchi, said the family spent N160,000 on his father’s health after he was dehumanised by Hassan.

Effort to meet Danjuma, the other victim tormented and accused of witchcraft proved abortive as this reporter was told that he was in his farm working during this reporter’s visit in August.

Kutigi and Patigi monarchs crowned him

WikkiTimes can authoritatively report that he was honoured by some monarchs who were satisfied with his devilish acts of declaring innocent victims as witches.

For instances, in Kutigi community of Niger State, he was honoured with the title of Mukadami (leader of Arabic teachers) in the district by Alhaji Hussaini Abubakar Woncin (Ezonuwan)

Also, the monarch of Patigi, HRH Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi, turbanned him the Sarki Mallami (leader of teachers) but his title was later withdrawn because he was discovered to be a fake healer.

A source in the community said, “The title was recovered because the emir later discovered that he was a fake mallam.”

Dr Leo, witchcraft activist speaks against Hassan’s inhumane actions

In an interview with WikkiTimes, Dr Leo Igwe, an international humanist, human rights activist and advocate against stigmatisation of women as witches, urged that perpetrators to be brought to book, adding that efforts should be made to hold them accountable.

“The abuses were repulsive and should be condemned. Efforts should be made to hold him accountable. Bring him to justice and get him to answer for his crimes,” he said.

He said according to the United Nations, torture is condemned from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings. “Torture is a crime under international law. According to all relevant instruments, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances.

“It is horrible, unconscionable and intolerable witchcraft accusation is a crime under the law,” he told WikkiTimes.

He emphasised that such perpetrators should be brought to book.

Leo further said that it was outrageous, insane and should make any person of conscience shudder or cringe. “It was indicative of the social decadence that is engulfing and choking our society to death,” he said.

He further advised families of any deceased or sick people to visit medical experts to ascertain sickness or the cause of their relatives’ death.

“There should be public health education and awareness programmes. People should take their sick relatives to hospital, follow medical advice and stop patronising faith-healers, diviners and charlatans like Hassan Patigi,” he advised.

Abdullateef Lanre Abdullahi (also known as Ibn Abdillah As-sudaisiy Al-Iloori), an Islmaic Scholar, lawyer, and public affairs analyst, said it is wrong for anyone to claim that he/she heals.

“No one can heal except Allah,” he told WikkiTimes, explaining further that there are ways to cure sicknesses by seeking medical treatments which are produced and prescribed by experts for patients.

Abdullahi added, “When healing through this means, we should note that only Allah can heal while the drugs are just a kind of trying means to cure sickness.”

He noted that there are herbal and orthodox medicines, but he warned followers of the prophet to desist from using magic powers.

“In as much as those medicines do not involve magic powers then they can be used by the Muslims,” he added, saying that it works for some. “Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon) prescribed medicines for one to use by the knowledge Allah gave him. Some of the medicines he prescribed were called “Abbatul_saudah”(purify water),” he said.

“For those that claim they have powers to heal people. If their means of healing above is the kind of power they possess, there is no problem with that. Only Allah can make it work. Now another way is to pray to Allah to wash away the sickness,” he said, citing that Nnabiyullah Ahyub (allaiyin sallatul wasalami ) had been sick for many years and he prayed and his prayer was accepted.”

He however stated that the person would observe prayer and seek from Allah but shouldn’t boast of himself that his prayer will be accepted.

The cleric therefore told WikkiTimes that Islam forbids Muslims from visiting marabouts claiming to have magic power.

“Those who claim that they have some powers or miracles, it is not acceptable in Islam under sharia and no Muslim should go to them because they are imitating the ways of qufahr (Christians).”

According to him, “Islam is not built upon the performance of miracle when talking of miracle that belongs to Allah and the only one that makes a miracle happen in the hands of his prophets and among the few chosen ones and when a miracle is performed by the prophet Muhammad, it is called muhajiza.

“Anyone claiming to perform miracles and doing things that are not in the right way, like the one that doesn’t pray, marrying more than four wives and some other things contrary to the ways of Islam can be easily identified by anyone. Such ones are fake prophets in this modern world.”

“It is not permissible to strip anyone naked, regardless of their offence,” he told WikkiTimes. He said if someone is found guilty of wrongdoing, the proper course of action is to bring them before the appropriate authorities for punishment.

He advised Muslims to stop consulting marabouts and claiming that someone is bewitching them or asking marabouts to predict their future. Instead, he urged Muslims to fervently pray to Allah for assistance in resolving their problems, rather than seeking guidance from soothsayers, as such actions could lead them away from Islam. He cited a Hadith in which the Prophet stated that those who visit soothsayers will have their prayers delayed for 40 days, and believing in what a marabout says can lead them astray.

The cleric further explained that anyone claiming to possess the power to enable a woman to give birth is essentially asserting God-like abilities, which goes against the principles of Islam. He said only Allah has the power to grant the gift of childbirth, and anyone making such claims is, in his view, an unbeliever and not a true Muslim.

Abubakar Kpada, a medical practitioner who conducted pregnancy tests for extorted and barren women in the Patigi community of Kwara State, said he was not the head of the medical practitioners at the centre.

“I have superiors, but I was one of the medical practitioners who conducted pregnancy tests,” he said.

When asked how a pregnancy test could yield a positive result immediately after sexual intercourse, he attributed it to the power of God. “God is capable of doing everything and knows everything. Those blessed by God successfully gave birth, while the unlucky ones did not,” he said.

He also claimed that they conducted positive tests for barren women, which then turned negative after leaving their medical facility. However, he could not recall the exact fees charged to these women and ended the call when further questioned by WikkiTimes.

Yaswasu, another medical practitioner who conducts pregnancy tests in the Mokwa community, told WikkiTimes that many of the tests he conducted were positive but provided no further explanation. He attributed the outcomes to the will of God. “It is God’s will. When God creates a path for you, it serves a purpose,” he said. He also claimed that Patigi had not known him prior to their meeting.

He confirmed that they charged N500 from each barren couple as test fees and that some tests yielded positive results while others were negative. However, he did not provide additional details when questioned further.

In response to our findings, Hassan Patigi, the self-proclaimed Islamic teacher, declared that this reporter would soon witness more instances of alleged witches being publicly humiliated and stripped naked.

He said he would fulfill his promise about sending people to Hajj by January.

“The Hajj’s event is still in progress. Inshaa Allahu, I will honour my commitment. Anytime between January and February.”

When pressed for further details regarding the act of stripping alleged witches, he initially scheduled a discussion at 8 pm. However, when contacted as scheduled, he postponed the conversation to 10 pm, citing the presence of guests. “We can have a more extensive discussion during the late hours of the day when my guests are no longer here. Let’s talk at 10 pm. I will be available by then,” and he ended the call.

Upon a second attempt to reach him, Hassan Patigi claimed that the Mecca forms were not being sold but distributed freely.

“When I visited Ogun State, some of my security personnel printed forms similar to mine and sold them to people. I, on the other hand, distributed the forms at no cost. When I learnt of this, I returned to the state and warned people not to pay for them. On that very day, I tore up the forms on stage,” he told WikkiTimes.

Asking him whether he sanctioned his staff for breach of trust, he side-stepped the question. Rather, he said he would fulfill his promise when it is time.

“I will pay by January as I earlier stated.  And about people being stripped naked, it is their fate. You will soon see more than that. Mine is to help in Nupe land.

“When alleged witches come, I point out those with witchcraft and clear those without the spirit,” he said.

When the reporter asked him more questions, he promised to call back, explaining that he had guests. But he failed to call back and also refused to answer several calls and text messages.

Official Responses

When contacted by WikkiTimes, Aliyu Yahaya, the Etsu Nupe’s Mayaki (Emirate minister of defence), claimed ignorance regarding Hassan Patigi’s activities in Nupe land. “I have no idea about that,” he stated, ending the call without further comment.

Aisha Wakaso, the Special Adviser on Print Media to the Niger State Governor, did not respond to multiple calls and ignored text messages from the reporter.

Danmaigoro Zubair Ibrahim, the Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara Governor on Islamic Religion, dismissed the issue of Hassan Patigi as a thing of the past. “Please, find another topic. That is history. We have resolved it. The police have taken the necessary actions and instructed him not to repeat such actions,” he said.

Ibrahim said the Kwara government was unaware of Hassan Patigi’s entry into the state, claiming that he hailed from the Mokwa community, not the Patigi community in Kwara State.

“There is no such person as Hassan Patigi in Kwara State. That individual is from Mokwa. This matter is closed. Please refrain from bringing up this issue. It is a closed chapter,” he said before ending the call.

Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the anti-graft agency, advised the reporter to submit a complaint to the EFCC office in Ilorin.

Despite multiple attempts, the public relations officers for the Niger and Kwara State Police Commands, Wasiu Abidoun and Okasanmi Ajayi, did not respond to calls and text messages from the reporter.

Kaduna Court outlaws custom requiring the refund of bride price

  • Download full judgment

By Lillian Okenwa

In another landmark judgment, an Upper Customary Court Of Kaduna State has held that: “Kagoma marriage custom requiring a woman who initiates a divorce to refund the token paid as her bride price as repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience.”

The court in its verdict delivered by His Worship Emmanuel J. Samaila, Esq. on Wednesday 10 January, 2024 held that: “The respondent’s reliance on the custom has the propensity of inhibiting the petitioner’s decision to seek a release from a marriage which for all intents and purposes has broken down irretrievably as evidenced by her uncontroverted testimony of the respondent’s acts of indignity, cruelty, assaults, grievous bodily harms and psychological hurts.

“The custom, which also violates the petitioner‟s fundamental right to freedom from discrimination  and  gender-based  disabilities,  as  guaranteed  under Section 42(1)(a) of our Constitution, is also unfair to the women married under Kagoma custom as no corresponding liability to pay any kind of compensation  to  a  divorced  wife  is  known  to  exist  under  Kagoma custom against a husband.”

His Worship further held that: “the  custom is unenforceable  because the  Kagoma marriage  custom requiring a woman to refund the token paid as her bride price, as a validation of the divorce she initiated to terminate a union which has broken down irretrievably, is incompatible with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), particularly Sections 1(3), 17(2)(b), 21(a) and 34(1)(a).

“It erodes the dignity of a woman married under Kagoma custom by reducing her to the status of a mere property whose value is determinable and recoverable at any time if she dares to opt out of a broken marriage, even after years of lawful cohabitation and all its concomitants including child bearing…

“Is it fair and in accord with the principles of natural justice to require a woman to refund the token paid as her bride price and return alone and empty-handed to her parents‟ house after investing her life in matrimony she must have desired to last forever? Is it equitable to make and enforce such an order against a woman married under customary law, as in the instant case, when such is not a requirement for either an interim or final decree dissolving a marriage contracted under the Marriage Act?

“Will it be conscionable to blindly and slavishly give effect to and make such an order against the petitioner just because it is the custom of  the  Kagoma  people  as  canvassed  by  the  respondent?

“Is  it conscionable that a woman married under the Marriage Act gets alimony and enjoys the just and equitable right to settlement of property and maintenance but her sister married under customary law gets nothing when she chooses to leave and is even required to refund to her man the token he paid as her bride price?

“Is it conscionable that a woman who was physically and psychologically battered and bruised in the course of discharging her numerous matrimonial responsibilities for eight (8)  years,  including  taking  care  of  their  child  and  the  respondent, especially when he becomes sick, should be ordered to refund her bride price for seeking to leave a broken union?

“How will the application of this custom encourage and inspire women married under customary law to be committed to their marriages to the point of returning to their husbands‟ houses, as the petitioner did severally in the instant case, even after being maltreated, bruised and battered…”

Ruth Reuben had approached the court seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Reuben Ibrahim which was contracted in 2015 in accordance with Gwantu custom.

The parties were given time to explore reconciliation. However, the matter was heard after reconciliation was reported to have failed.

While Ruth did not dispute the existence of the Kagoma marriage custom requiring a departing wife to refund the token paid as her bride price to her husband., she countered it with a statement of her corresponding right to take custody of their child under Gwantu marriage custom.

Similarly, Reuben Ibrahim did not question the existence or applicability of the Gwantu marriage custom requiring a husband, as a pre-condition for the refund of his bride price, to (a) give up the custody of his child, (b) fix the damage done to a woman’s body as a result of the husband’ s acts of cruelty and (c) return her dowry, the items she brought to his house when they got married. Yet he wanted a refund of the bride price without complying with the custom.

Last year His Worship Samaila, Esq in an unprecedented verdict, upheld the request of a woman who contended that she would only return her bride price if the husband whom she sought to be divorced from could return her body to the condition it was in when he married her.

“The Government has abandoned us”, lament Bwari residents in Abuja as gunmen snatch 23 residents

Although the Federal Government has admitted that most forests in Nigeria has been taken over by bandits and kidnappers, worn and suffering weary Nigerians are still waiting for a decisive action against acts of terror daily carried out on citizens.

This is even as gunmen said to number around 40 stormed the Kawu community in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the early hours of Thursday and abducted 23 people.

Notwithstanding that Bwari is in the FCT, Nigeria’s seat of power, bandits have in past weeks and days operated with abandon carrying people away in droves and killing others.

However, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas, has announced that the federal government will get enough forces to deal with bandits and other criminals who have taken over most of the country’s forests.

Mr Abbas spoke on Thursday at the ministry’s top management retreat at the Fifth Chukker Resort, Maraba-Jost Road, Kaduna.

“It is quite unfortunate that most of our forests have been taken over by bandits, kidnappers and other terrorists that have been unleashing mayhem on innocent Nigerians,” said the minister.

He noted that the issue bothered President Bola Tinubu, and the federal government would soon set up enough forces to beef up security in the forests. We are liaising with the military, SSS, police, and other security agencies to remedy this ugly trend.

Mr Abbas added that the federal government was intensifying efforts to cleanse up the forests of poachers, illegal loggers and other sundry criminals making life miserable in the forests.

According to the minister, the various tree species in the country must be adequately protected, while the government is also doing everything humanly possible to address all environmental challenges.

Mr Abbas said the government was considering introducing coastal guards to boost security in Nigeria’s coastal waters.

“We will also look at other issues like perennial flooding, coastal and gully erosion and other related environmental challenges plaguing parts of Nigeria,” the minister said.

Many are wondering how bandits could freely operate in Bwari which houses the Nigerian Law School, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Defence College Camp as well as Nigerian Navy Ratings’ Barracks and more.

Kawu, the latest target shares boundaries with two states: Niger and Kaduna.

The Councilor representing the area, Abdulmumini Zakari, who is the deputy speaker in the council, said the gunmen arrived around the community on Wednesday from the Kuyeri Forest in Kaduna State.

He explained that “They divided themselves into groups and some went into the palace of the district head, Alhaji Abdurrahman Danjuma Ali, where they abducted his son, Lukman, and his wife, who he married two weeks ago. Others attacked the compound of Alhaji Alhassan Sidi Kawu, the Marafa of Kawu and a former PDP Chairman of Kawu Ward. They abducted him along with his four children.”

The bandits also went into the compound of Sarkin Pawan Kawu, Gambo S Pawa, and abducted him alongside his two wives and some children.

The FCT Police Command spokeswoman, S.P Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a reply to our reporter yesterday.

“Some unknown hoodlums stormed Kawu village, a bordering community with Kagarko LGA, in Kaduna State, and kidnapped people. The truth is that the miscreants raided that general area and escaped into Kaduna State,” she said.

55-year-old man bags life imprisonment for raping 6-year-old girl and infecting her with STD in Niger state

It was Gautama Buddha who said: “Offensive acts come back upon the evil doer, like dust that is thrown against the wind.”

And Yes, he has been sentenced to a life term in jail, but what about the little girl whose life he has brutally altered? The 6-year-old he not only defiled but infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?

55-year-old Yau Ibrahim of Kundu village, Rafi LGA of the state has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Senior Magistrates’ Court 3B, Unguwan-Daji, Minna, Niger State for defiling a 6-year-old girl.

He was standing trial for unlawful sexual intercourse with a child who was equally infected with STDs.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Aliyu Yakubu Kuta, earlier told the court that on August 3, 2023, at about 3:30pm, one Abdullahi Dauda of the same village reported at Kagara Police Division that the suspect lured his 6-year-old daughter who was in primary 1 to his room and had unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

Inspector Yakubu also told the court that the little girl sustained injuries on her private parts leading to severe bleeding.

Two witnesses and two exhibits including the confessional statement of the convict and medical report on the health status of the victim from the Police Clinic, Minna, were taken by the court before the prosecution closed the case for ruling

Yau Ibrahim however, chose not to enter defence, admitting his offence.

Delivering the judgement on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, the judge, Hafsat Abdullahi Bawa Wuse, said though the plea for leniency from the convict was considered by the court, the convict deserved imprisonment for life considering the magnitude of the offence committed and the victim’s present state of health as confessed by the convict who told the court that he had infected the victim with Sexual Transmitted Diseases which was also contained in the victim’s medical report as well as the stigma the victim would carry for life.

She said the convict was sentenced to imprisonment for life at the Minna old correctional centre for the offence of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child, punishable under Section 26 (2) of the Niger State Child Rights Law 2021 as Amended.

After being charged nearly N50,000 for an N8,000 item, Betty Irabor cautions shoppers

Betty Irabor has narrated how she was scammed after shopping at a store in Lagos.

She explained that she picked only a few items and when she got to the checkout counter, she was told her purchase amounts to N65,455.90.

She explained that she was taken aback but didn’t contest it. However, while going home, she looked at the items on the receipt and realised she was charged N49,640 for a salmon fillet which a staff of the store already told her costs 8,000.

She said she went back and the cashier tried to convince her the salmon costs N49,640.

Eventually, they admitted that it cost N8,000 and blamed a system error for the hike in price.

Ms. Irabor urged shoppers to pay extra attention when shopping to avoid being scammed or overcharged.
