The axiom that ‘The police is your friend’ came to life as protesters in Lagos were on Tuesday served with biscuits and drinks by the police authorities.
In protest of the savagely biting hunger in Nigeria, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Tuesday, began their two-day protest.
Protests were held Lagos, Kano, Oyo and Abuja while there have been reports of disruptions in Borno.
The NLC accuses the government of reneging on an agreement to put in place policies to mitigate the suffering of workers due to the removal of petrol subsidies. The government says it is doing its best.
The discontent march which was greeted with a massive turnout of both protesters and the police in Lagos received an unusual positive treatment from the law enforcement agents.
Then in an unusual twist to police – civil society engagements, the police in Lagos provided the protesters with drinks and biscuits, a fact acknowledged by NLC state chairman, Mrs Funmi Sessi.
“Three gbosa to the commissioner of police. They gave us water, they protected us and they gave us drinks,” Mrs Sessi said and her voice was captured on Arise TV as the anti-hunger protest drew to an end near the Lagos State House of Assembly complex as she gave a notice of another protest tomorrow.
The police commissioner in the state reportedly ordered a truck of bottled water and cartons of biscuits which were distributed to refresh the protesters.
The protesters both in Lagos and Abuja called for the return of fuel subsidy among other demands.
