Justice Beyond Peace: Why Nnamdi Kanu’s release is a step toward reconciliation and progress

Press Release by Otu Oka-iwu Abuja

The ongoing calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have sparked widespread debate across Nigeria. While some Igbo elders and leaders have framed his release as a condition for peace in the Southeast, this perspective risks oversimplifying the complex dynamics of the region.

While we share the sentiment that his release is a matter of urgency, we respectfully disagree with the notion that peace in the Southeast should be contingent upon his freedom. Ndi Igbo are peace builders by nature, known for their resilience, dialogue driven approaches, and commitment to unity. Peace in the Southeast is not, and should not be, a bargaining chip. It is a fundamental right and responsibility that transcends any single individual. Instead, the release of Nnamdi Kanu should be viewed as a step toward justice, reconciliation, and the restoration of trust between the Federal Government and the people of the Southeast. His prolonged detention has become a symbol of perceived marginalization and systemic inequities, fuelling tensions and mistrust. Releasing him would signify a commitment to addressing these grievances through dialogue and mutual respect.

Moreover, his release would align with Nigeria’s constitutional principles and international human rights obligations. The rule of law demands that every citizen, regardless of their political stance, is treated fairly and afforded due process. Prolonged detention without resolution undermines these principles and erodes public confidence in the justice system.

Otu Oka-Iwu Abuja maintains that the release of Nnamdi Kanu would serve as a gesture of goodwill, signalling the Federal Government’s willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue with Igbo leaders and stakeholders. Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and addressing the concerns of marginalized groups, including Ndi Igbo, is essential for fostering national unity. Releasing Nnamdi Kanu would demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and equity, reinforcing the idea that every Nigerian has a stake in the nation’s future. Reconciliation is a cornerstone of sustainable peace. By releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the Federal Government would create an opportunity for healing and bridge-building, allowing all parties to move forward in a spirit of cooperation and mutual understanding.

While peace in the Southeast is not dependent on any one individual, the release of Nnamdi Kanu could help de-escalate tensions and create an environment conducive to constructive dialogue and development. The release of Nnamdi Kanu would reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law and due process. It would send a strong message that the government is willing to uphold justice and fairness, even in politically sensitive cases. This would enhance Nigeria’s reputation both domestically and internationally as a nation that respects human rights and democratic principles. The release of Nnamdi Kanu would set a precedent for resolving conflicts through dialogue rather than force. It would demonstrate that the government is willing to listen to the concerns of its citizens and address them through peaceful and inclusive means.

We, therefore, once again, urge the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu not as a condition for peace but as a demonstration of its commitment to justice, equity, and reconciliation. At the same time, we call on Igbo leaders, elders, and stakeholders to continue championing peace and unity in the Southeast. Ndi Igbo have always been a people of peace, progress, and resilience, this is not just about one man; it is about the collective aspirations of a people and the promise of a united, prosperous Nigeria.

Sir. Chidiebere Nwabueze Udekwe, KSC
