What you need to know about ex-Gov Rashidi Ladoja, the next Olubadan-in -waiting

A former Governor of Oyo State, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, is poised to become the next Olubadan of Ibadanland, following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on July 7, 2025.

As the Otun Olubadan, the highest-ranking chief in the civil line, Ladoja is positioned first in line for the throne under the unique rotational system that governs the city’s traditional leadership.

Born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari village near Ibadan, Ladoja’s educational journey took him through Ibadan Boys High School and Olivet Baptist High School, culminating in a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Liège in Belgium.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he started his career at Total before delving into business and politics.

Ladoja first took office as Governor of Oyo State in May 2003 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), serving until his controversial impeachment in January 2006.

He was later reinstated by a Supreme Court ruling in December 2006 and completed his term in May 2007.

Since then, he has remained an active political figure, contesting elections with various parties before joining the Zenith Labour Party in 2018.

In August 2024, Ladoja embraced his role as Otun Olubadan by accepting the ceremonial beaded crown, a requirement for ascending to the Olubadan title under the revised chieftaincy declaration.

He stated on a private radio station in Ibadan then: “By the grace of God, I will become Olubadan. My blood pressure has been stable; anyone God destined to become Olubadan will become Olubadan.”

The updated chieftaincy law mandated that only Beaded Crown Obas are eligible for the throne, a change some perceived as politically motivated by Governor Seyi Makinde.

The state government, however, insisted that the amendment aligned with recommendations from the late Oba Balogun’s review committee, framing it as a necessary cultural reform.

The amendment sparked controversies, as Ladoja initially resisted accepting the crown, unlike his peers.

Critics argued that this clause could jeopardise his claim, while Ladoja and his supporters viewed it as a political manoeuvre by Governor Makinde in retaliation for Ladoja’s opposition to his 2023 re-election bid.

Ibadan’s succession has traditionally alternated between civil (Baale/Otun) and military (Balogun) lines for over 170 years.

As the leading civilian contender, Ladoja is next in line for the throne following the passing of the current Olubadan.

With the throne now vacant, the Olubadan-in-Council and kingmakers are set to formally propose the next Olubadan, a decision that will shape the future of Ibadanland.

Jaja faults Paul Daudu, SAN, says Justice Nyako’s judgment on Natasha same as previous judgments against suspension of Ndume and Omo-Agege

Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja has faulted Paul Daudu, SAN’s letter to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyers, which warned that “she should not force her way into the senate on Tuesday.”

Jaja, in an open letter, stressed that the Kogi Central Senator is no longer under the restrictions imposed on her by the senate and therefore free to resume her legislative duties on Tuesday, 8th July, 2025.

The letter reads:

Open Letter To Paul Dauda, SAN: HON. JUSTICE BINTA NYAKO’S JUDGMENT CLEARLY ORDERED SENATOR NATASHA TO RESUME SITTING ON TUESDAY 8TH JULY 2025 BECAUSE ONE OF THE RELIEFS THAT LED TO THE LAWSUIT WAS TO DECLARE HER SUSPENSION AS ILLEGAL (JUST AS THE PREVIOUS JUDGMENTS AGAINST THE SUSPENSION OF SENATORS NDUME AND OMO-AGEGE ARE SELF-EXECUTORY (THE PROVINCE OF LEGISPRUDENCE AND LEGISLATIVE LAW IS DIFFERENT FROM LITIGATION)

By Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja

Dear Paul Dauda, SAN, Sir,

By way of re-introduction, my name is Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, I was one of the special guests that you invited as a discussant during the 2024 law week of the Nigerian Bar Association-NBA Bwari Branch.

I am writing this open letter to you as part of my public legal education series.

Our Association-ALDRAP is dedicated to promoting professionalism in this area of legal practice known as legislative law.

Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners-ALDRAP are a professional Association of over 1,000 legislative lawyers who are staff and consultants at the National Assembly and other Legislatures within and outside Nigeria, established in the year 2017.

In your open letter to Jubrin Samuel Okutepa, SAN you have alleged that the portion of the judgment that mentioned Section 63 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 is an “OBITER DICTUM” that does not constitute a BINDING AND ENFORCEABLE ORDER!!!

In other words, your open letter is of the opinion that the 4th July 2025 judgment of Hon. Justice Binta Nyako does not constitute a lifting of the suspension imposed upon Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The said open letter is published here: https://lawandsocietymagazine.com/senates-lawyer-warns-against-senator-natasha-forcing-her-way-into-the-senate-chamber-on-tuesday/

WITH THE GREATEST RESPECT TO YOUR STANDING AS A SENIOR ADVOCATE OF NIGERIA (SAN), THE JUDGMENT OF HON. BINTA NYAKO CATEGORICALLY INVALIDATES THE SUSPENSION OF SENATOR NATASHA AND RESTORES HER AS A SENATOR OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

THEREFORE, SHE AS FROM THE DATE OF THE SAID JUDGMENT, 4TH JULY 2025, SENATOR NATASHA WAS RESTORED AS A SENATOR OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

SENATOR NATASHA IS NO LONGER UNDER OF THE RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED UPON HER BY THE SENATE ON 6TH MARCH 2025, SHE IS THEREFORE FREE TO RESUME HER DUTIES ON TUESDAY 8TH JULY 2025.

The reasons for the foregoing assertions can be found in the court processes filed by Senator Natasha and her lawyers.

As a lawyer for the Senate President, I am 100% confident that you are in possession of the statement of claim(s) files by Senator Natasha and her lawyers!!!

Please kindly examine, the portion of the said documents that contain the statement of claims, you would see clearly that one of RELIEFS sought by Senator Natasha was a declaration that her suspension was both illegal and unconstitutional.

Hon. Justice Binta Nyako categorically stated that the said suspension of Senator Natasha is unconstitutional (violation of Section 63 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999) and illegal (violation of Section 14 (2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers, Privileges and Immunities) Act, 2018.

My question is: what are the natural consequences when a court of law declares that an action of the Senate or a portion of any legislation (primary or secondary) is in conflict with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution?

Section 1 (3) of the Nigerian Constitution states categorically that such action of the Senate or portion of said legislation AUTOMATICALLY becomes NULL AND VOID. In other words, the operation of the “BLUE PENCIL RULE” immediately kicks-in to render it no longer functional because of its inconsistency with the relevant sections of the Nigerian Constitution.

Hon. Justice Binta Nyako categorically stated this in her judgment when she stated that the Standing Orders of the Senate, 2023 ought to be reviewed to bring its provisions into harmony with the Nigerian Constitution.

Therefore, the decision of the Senate of 6th March 2025 which imposed six months suspension upon Senator Natasha, having been declared as unconstitutional and illegal no longer stands as from 4th July 2025.

IT IS SELF-EXECUTORY and requires no further action(s) to implement!!!

Please kindly consider the 2017 decision/judgment of the Court of Appeal in the case of Senator Ali Ndume which declared his suspension as illegal, he returned to his seat at the Senate without any further steps!!!

Also, consider the 2018 judgment that restored Senator Omo-Agege, after the Federal High Court judgment, he returned to his seat at the Senate without any further ado!!!

Let me conclude by using this open letter as an opportunity to invite you to pursue and undertake further qualifications in this specialist and niche area of legal practice and scholarship known as Legislative Law.

You can begin by registering as a member of ALDRAP and enrolling at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for postgraduate programmes in Legislative Drafting.

You can also combine your academic credentials with hands-on PUPILLAGE under Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN and a few other legislative lawyers in Nigeria.

I look forward to your re-advising your client the President of the Senate after this open letter to allow the Nigerian Constitution to prevail.

Yours faithfully,
Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja,
7th July 2025.

DSS arrests father, mother, daughters, family friend over alleged illicit drug distribution

For allegedly running a major illicit drug distribution network in Lagos State, the Department of State Security (DSS) has arrested a businessman, Ajah Johnson Uchenna, and his wife, Rosemary Uchenna, their two daughters – Stella Uchenna and Ngozi Uchenna – as well as their family friend, Okoro Elijah, for drug.

The DSS, after the drug burst, handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who took them into custody.

The four family members and their family friend were arrested after an investigation showed that they were running a major illicit drug distribution network in Lagos State.

The couple was first arrested on June 13, 2025, by operatives of the Department of State Services [DSS] in Ojo area of Lagos State and transferred to NDLEA along with 277.5kg skunk.

According to the DSS, while they were still being investigated in custody, credible intelligence showed that the family business was going on in their house.

This led to a raid of their home and a packing store where 231kg of the same substance was recovered on July 1.

Three persons arrested during the raid included their two daughters, Ngozi Uchenna and Blessing Uchenna, as well as their family friend Okoro Elijah, who were running the family business in the absence of the couple.

Police in Anambra arrest man with fresh human breast, rescue kidnapped driver

The operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a suspect found with a fresh human breast in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

They also rescued a kidnapped driver, recovered an abandoned suspected stolen vehicle, and arrested suspects for diversion of goods worth millions of naira.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, July 6, 2025.

Ikenga stated that the 25-year-old suspect, Samuel Eze, was arrested on Sunday by a joint security team attached to Awada Police Station.

The team included police officers and operatives of the Anambra State Vigilance group, who were on routine patrol when they arrested Eze at 3:30 p.m.

“The Joint Security Team patrolling Jude Onyekwere Street, Awada, Obosi, arrested 25-year-old Samuel Eze in possession of a fresh female breast,” Ikenga said.

He stated that the recovered body part was deposited at a morgue, while the suspect was undergoing interrogation for further investigation and prosecution.

He said in another separate operation, police officers attached to the Rapid Response Squad, acting on credible intelligence, successfully rescued a kidnapped driver on July 4, 2025, at about 12:45 p.m. According to him, the driver had been abducted by criminals who diverted his truck, which was loaded with custard powder valued at ₦9.5 million.

The police spokesperson added that the goods, which were originally destined for a warehouse in Asaba, Delta State, were diverted to Enugwu-Ukwu after the abductors tied the driver in a bush. He said the police arrested three suspects in connection with the crime: 38-year-old Udegenyi Ugochukwu, 47-year-old Anayochukwu Okonkwo, and 47-year-old Good Odigili. The suspects confessed to the crime and are currently assisting police investigations.

Furthermore, SP Ikenga reported the recovery of a suspected stolen and abandoned custom-coloured Toyota Sienna with registration number 736 JP and an inscription “Forum of Accountants Delta State” on its body. He explained that vehicle was found by operatives from Obosi Division at about 4:30 p.m. on July 5, 2025, during a patrol along Okpuno-Umuota Village, Obosi. The Command has called on anyone or group seeking the vehicle to present valid proof of ownership for verification and possible collection.

The Police Command, while reiterating its commitment to safety and security in the state, assured residents that joint security surveillance and patrols involving the Police, Military, Civil Defence, Immigration Service, Department of State Services, and the Anambra Vigilante Group will be sustained across the state.

From the North, ‘a storm is coming’

By Lasisi Olagunju

Decades ago, my late mother pointed at a house to me: “Someone in that house once snatched someone’s wife. In the evening, when it was time for husband and wife to sleep, a storm swept into the bedroom and carried off their sleeping mat. Then pandemonium followed…Ó di b’óòlo o yàá mi.”

She described that scene as one of a cyclone of vengeful rage. Wife snatcher fought back strongly, got his mat back, but had to let go of the woman he snatched. He had to.

There was an exchange on Seun Okinbaloye’s ‘Mic On Podcast’ programme on Saturday. The video is trending online. Answering Seun’s questions was beautiful, brainy, bold Zainab Buba Galadima. She is the daughter of fiery opposition politician from the North, Alhaji Buba Galadima.

Zainab is an APC member, a former public servant who served in the Buhari administration while her father was busy throwing darts at that same government.

Zainab is asked some really interesting questions, and she gives very interesting answers and insights. She is an APC member who is scared that the party has frittered away its goodwill and has incurred the people’s anger in indescribable ways. She looks into the belly of time and warns that a hurricane is hurtling towards our complacent country.

“I am really disappointed (with the APC and its government); very disappointed. You know, there are some places I cannot go to. During Buhari’s second term, they (the poor) broke my windscreen. They said ‘oh. You promised us, now you are enjoying. You are inside a car.’ Before, at the traffic light, you saw them begging with outstretched arms, now, they would knock on your window; now they would snatch whatever it is that you have (for them). So, even if you think it doesn’t affect me, it is coming. I am afraid of the storm that is coming”

“There is a storm?”

“Oh. Yeah. There is a storm that is coming. You know, people would think that ‘oh it’s the North, they don’t go to school, there is insecurity’. Look, if it blows up in the North, Nigeria is gone.”

At Phillipi, Shakespeare’s Cassius sees something exactly like this: “The storm is up, and all is on the hazard.” Zainab does not mince words about what is coming.

What she sees coming is not as portentous as the way she says it. Watch the video – almost 36 minutes long. Watch her; watch her eyes.

She is a foundation member of the APC. But, she is asked to look at the eight years of Buhari, and two years of Tinubu. “Are you proud of the APC?” She is fast in answering that question in the negative. She goes on to explain in ghastly details: “Unless you are in the government, you won’t know the extent of the damage. I am really not happy. I thought APC was ready for victory. But it did not know how to manage victory and I don’t think we were ready for governance. You see people who scream ‘I am for the people, I am for the people’ but once they get into government, you ask, ‘Is this the same person I used to know?”

The lady is asked if she is not proud of the Buhari government she worked for. She says: “There are a lot of regrets”, although she served in the government, not in a capacity where her performance could be assessed. “So, it is hard for someone like me to say, ‘oh I regret.’ But, there are some situations where I said, ‘no, we shouldn’t have done this.’

Who should then be blamed for the failure of the APC government? Her answer isn’t what APC politicians would say: “You know, I can’t single myself out. I was part of the people that actually campaigned and believed in that government. So, any failure on our part, I think I am one of the people that should be held responsible for it.” Compare her answer here to Adams Oshiomhole’s shameful sermon to APC governors at a meeting in Benin last week. The former APC national chairman said the current economic hardship was caused by Buhari’s government. Specifically, he accused that regime of “printing over ₦31 trillion.” Oshiomhole likened the heist to the fiscal suicide of Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe and Idi Amin’s Uganda.

Smooth-talking Oshiomhole spoke the truth to an audience that is complicit. Buhari is APC; the governors listening and nodding to Oshiomhole’s truth are all miserably APC. There are more twists in this tale: The ‘lecturer’, Adams, is an insider recasting himself as a truth teller. Adams was right there, hands on the steering wheel while the vehicle of Nigeria was driven into the ditch.

From 2018 to 2020, Oshiomhole served as national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was not a bystander in the Ways and Means and other heinous acts of the government he put and sustained in power. Check his words, his utterances and interventions during that era. In August 2018 when Nigerians groaned under Buhari’s misrule, Oshiomhole went to Daura and declared there that “Buhari’s critics are saboteurs and thieves.” He was the party’s loudest cheerleader; he was the enforcer, the one who silenced dissent, who abused and mocked critics. He was in the room when the teapot was left at the edge. Now, with the teacup shattered, he blames someone else for the mess.

A proverb for the elder who acts this shameful way: Àgbà tí kò ní’tìjú, ojú kan ni ò bá ní; ojú kan òún, l’ógangan iwájú orí è ni yí o wà (An elder without self-respect might as well have only one eye; that one eye being in the centre of his forehead). Instead of forging a furnace of informed efforts, Oshiomhole is helping his party to mint fake notes of self-indicting excuses. In societies that have consequences for actions, and punishment for crimes, Oshiomhole’s confession is enough to sink the ‘Hispaniola’, the ruling party’s ship with Long John Silver and his gang of pirates.

One day, the volcanic ash of today will clear from the skies. But, if we are not careful and deliberate in refreshing the memory of history, today’s abortionists will write it in our skies that they were midwives of peace and plenty. The complicit must not return, dust ash off their clothes, and then point fingers at the fire they helped ignite and say it is someone else’s misdeed. They cannot stroll into the marketplace, clad in the immaculate innocence of the prophet who warned the people, after the flood.

Zainab is not like Oshiomhole. She asks to be joined among the damned who acted Ali and the Angel; those who burnt the barn and packaged its ash, and labelled the ash as sugar and sold it to Nigeria. Zainab is asked to speak on Tinubu’s cabinet. “There isn’t much they are doing. I think it is just a waste.” I don’t think anyone outside the regime would say she is wrong. Nigeria is in a mess and the Tinubu government is clueless. Can they still fix the broken system? She says they can.

“How?”

“They should get experts; people who can do the job.” The ones there now don’t know Jack? No. They don’t. Or, rather, they know something: how to borrow and spend money on inanities.

Zainab’s appearance on Okinbaloye’s Mic On stirred more than foaming content; it dropped an omen: “A storm is coming.” She thinks the storm is coming from the North. I don’t think she is entirely right. I think the storm is coming from everywhere we have the ditched, the stranded. It is coming from the four cardinal points; and they, in their millions, are raring to go; seething.

When I watched the way Zainab announced the coming of the storm, I remembered the old American blues lyric by Richard Hawley:

“There’s a storm a-comin’, you’d better run.

There’s a storm coming, goodbye to the sun…”

Nigeria is in wedlock with storms; it gets tossed from one to the other. This one that is coming, when it comes, how many caps and roofs do you think will stand? No one knows. The year 2027 has been primed by politicians to be a mountain of the heartless (òkè òdájú) which all must climb, the orphans inclusive. From the North, we hear stuff like ‘even if Bola Tinubu’s son is made the INEC chairman, he will hit the canvas (ó máa lu’lè).’

It is scary. The man won’t do what the wife snatcher I started this piece with did. He will demand his furled mat and hold on to the snatched wife. He is wired that way. His pestle pounds in a mortar of brass (omo olódó ide). That is what his oríkì says.

His enemies probably know all these about the man they are raging against. The coalition that will do the pig fight with Tinubu morphed into ADC last week. Its choice of battle-tested David Mark as leader has created enough jitters. The howling of the winds presages what is coming.

I am not done with Zainab and her ultrasound scan of our politics and prospects. She paints the profligate APC with what she believes it truly is: a party that never should have been trusted with power. She is searing in her reflections. Hear her again:

“I am highly disappointed… I thought APC was really ready for victory. They did not know how to manage victory and I don’t think we were ready for governance.”

From the totality of what she is saying, would it be correct to say that APC is a difficult name to bear in public now?

She says “Yes.” And she explains: “Let me tell you. There was a reconciliation meeting at the Women Centre for FCT APC members. I swear to God, I only saw one APC cap. People went there as APC people but they did not go there for the government. People are scared…” They should be.

She says the country is worse now under Tinubu. She hints that the APC is in disarray inside but looks perfect outside. Fish rots from the head. Zainab says in the APC “you can’t vie for positions if you really want to serve the people. (You won’t get the ticket). You have to buy it or steal it and run with it, with your full chest too, proudly.”

While the ruling party misbehaves and misrules, daily the country goes down, progressively. “People are saying Goodluck was better than Buhari; people are saying Buhari is better than Tinubu. That is how it will keep going…We have to fix the system.”

She has reservations about the coalition that was unveiled last week. “Some of them were in government for eight years. What did they do to help the people?” Despite that, however, she says the coalition’s ADC is definitely not good news to (and for) the APC and Tinubu.

Does she think this coalition can remove Tinubu and the APC in 2027? She is asked and she answers “Ah” and smiles, and says “If they are united. And they have to bring all their… army…on board.”

So, looking at 2027, as a Northerner, what is the North saying about Tinubu? She says she honestly does “not have good reviews. It is bad; it is really bad.”

Specifically, does she think the North will vote for Tinubu? She says the man will get, “maybe, 30 percent or less.”

That is to say it is going to be worse for him than in 2023?

“Oh yes. It is going to be.”

And, generally, Tinubu’s chance of winning in 2027?

“It is going to be the toughest battle he will ever see. It is going to be the toughest.”

The president will do well for himself by listening to this lady. He will also help himself by listening to other real human beings like Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar. You remember Umar’s recent advice to Tinubu? I paste it here for emphasis: “The other day, the Senate President was reported to have predicted that President Bola Tinubu will win the 2027 election with 99.9 percent of the votes! Even allowing for the fact that this Senate President is widely known for his humorous incitement, Mr President will do well to shun such oracles.”

Zainab Galadima says there is a storm coming. We wait to see how it lands and who gets swept away. But, before then, we should remind ourselves that in politics, storms don’t just happen. They are caused by choices, by silence and by complicity.

Remember, the wife snatcher in my opening story could not have his furled mat back until he dropped the wife he stole. So, until sinners who provoked and helped create the storm admit their part; until they stop the blame game, make restitutory propitiations, they (and even the innocent) are not safe from the coming rage of the winds. A storm is coming. I will be safe.
