Hell hath no fury like a 19 year-old in love spurned, as her fire kills rival and razes lover’s house in Lagos

Mohammed had a lovey-dovey relationship with 19-year-old girl, Jemila Ibrahim, but because she was allegedly unfaithful, he dumped her like a bag of tasteless salt. And then, painful tragedy followed.

His new love was burnt and died three days later in hospital. He also lost his home and property as Jamila and another friend allegedly created hell for him by setting his lover, and humble abode in Monkey village in Festac Town, Lagos ablaze.

Jemila and friend have been arrested, while the Lagos Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu, has asked that the matter be investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Panti, Lagos.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Lagos police spokesperson said in a statement:
“The Lagos State Police has arrested one Jemila Ibrahim, f, 19 year old, and her friend, Fatima Mohammed, f, 21 years, of Monkey Village, Festac Area, Lagos, for setting ablaze the house of one Mohammed Yusuf, m, of Monkey Village, Lagos State, and his girlfriend, Rabi, f, on 18th November, 2020 at 5.30pm….

“Mohammed had alleged his former lover, Jemila Ibrahim, of infidelity before they broke up; he later met and fell in love with his new lover, Rabi, that was caught up in the inferno.

“The duo of Jemila Ibrahim, f, and her friend, Fatimo Mohammed, f, of Monkey Village, who accompanied Jemila to commit the heinous crime, have been arrested by the police operatives attached to Satellite Division of the command,” the statement reads.

24 hours after freedom for ABU students, other kidnappers storm campus

Less than 24 hours after the cheery news that nine students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, kidnapped last week Sunday along the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway, were released by their abductors last Saturday night, the school has announced another incident, this time on the campus.

There were unverified reports that families paid N1 million for each of the students, even as the school’s spokesperson disclosed that of the three persons abducted from a home, two were set free by fleeing abductors.

The Director of Public Affairs of the ABU, Mallam Auwalu Umar, confirmed the incident in a statement titled, ‘Armed kidnappers invade ABU, abduct staff on Monday.

The statement reads: “At about 12:50am on Monday, 23rd November 2020, kidnappers invaded the house of a staff member of the University on Sardauna Crescent, Area BZ, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria. They went away with him along with his wife and daughter.

“The University Security Division quickly informed the operatives of the Police Intelligence Response Team that advanced to the scene following the distress call.

“There was an exchange of fire between the kidnappers and the mobile police operatives.

“When it was clear that they would be overpowered, the kidnappers ran into the bush along with the victims.

“As the police went after them up to Kasuwar Da’a village bordering the University, the kidnappers then released the wife and the daughter and went away with the husband.

“Some empty shells were recovered from the scene.”

#EndSARS Lekki shooting: FG writes CNN, threatens legal action

Lai Mohammed

…says report blatantly irresponsible

Peeved at its #EndSARS Lekki shooting, the Federal Government has lodged a complaint with the headquarters of Cable News Network (CNN), demanding an immediate and exhaustive investigation into the report.

In a petition, the Nigerian Government threatened legal action and urged CNN to determine the authenticity of the report and its conformity to basic standards of journalism.

The government said in the petition addressed to Mr Jonathan Hawkins VP, Communications, CNN Centre Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., that if the international media organisation failed to carry out its demand, it will “take any action within its laws’’ to prevent CNN from aggravating the #EndSARS crisis.

Dated Nov. 23, the petition was signed by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and emailed to Persecondnews.

CNN had in the “investigative’’ report alleged that it ”uncovered that Nigerian security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters” at the Lekki Toll plaza during the #EndSARS protest.

The CBN report entitled, “How a Bloody Night of Bullets Quashed a Young Protest Movement’’, was aired on Nov. 18, 2020.

The petition reads in part: “We write to put on record that the report did not just fall short of journalistic standards; it reinforces the disinformation that is going around on the issue. “It is blatantly irresponsible and it is a poor piece of journalistic work by a reputable international news organization.

“In the first instance, the report did not live up to the most basic of the core principles of journalism – balance and fairness.”

According to the minister, the CNN failed to exhibit the journalism ethic of balance and fairness in the report but slanted the story to favour the reporter’s desired conclusion. “Rushing to air such a momentous story without presenting the government’s side is inexcusable and indefensible.

“CNN said it contacted over 100 protesters and family members, but did not speak to one official of Nigeria’s federal government. “While CNN said there was no response from the army and that officials of Lagos State would not speak in view of the Judicial Panel that is investigating the matter, it did not say what effort it made to speak with any official of the federal government.

“The truth is that CNN did not even attempt to reach the federal government. “Nima Elbagir, who presented the report and most probably led the investigation, is conversant with the Minister of Information and Culture, who is also the Spokesman for the Federal Government of Nigeria, yet did not say that she even tried to reach the Minister.

“It is therefore strange, to say the least, that she would rush to air such an important ‘investigation’ report without getting the government’s side,’’ it said. The minister alleged that the CNN was not present at the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the incident but “relied heavily on unverified footages it harvested from social media.” “Unlike CNN, a reporter from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Pidgin Service, Damilola Banjo, was at the Lekki Toll Gate on the night in question.

“She was quoted as saying soldiers shot sporadically into the air and not at the protesters –  a direct contradiction of the position taken by CNN who relied on second and third-hand information,’’ the petition states.

The minister contended that while CNN obtained footage showing when the vehicles carrying soldiers left their barracks and arrived at the Lekki Toll Gate, it could not obtain any footage showing the bodies of those supposedly killed in the ‘massacre’. He said the government was baffled by the CNN position that it stood by its story and ”our reporting was carefully and meticulously researched” despite all evidence to the contrary.

Mohammed said DJ Switch; one of CNN’s star eyewitnesses in its ‘investigative’ reporting is not credible because her story on the Lekki Toll Gate shooting has changed several times.

“From claiming she counted 78 bodies of protesters who were supposedly killed by soldiers on the night of the Lekki Toll Gate incident, she has twice, at least, changed the casualty figure from 78 to 15 and then to 7, without a shred of evidence.

“In one of social media videos of DJ Switch that was used by CNN (see attached link 1), the lady (DJ Switch) claimed she and some unnamed persons carried dead bodies and dropped them at the feet of the soldiers. “She also claimed she spoke to their Commander before the soldiers threw the bodies into the vans. “Curiously, for someone who was streaming live on Instagram during the Lekki Toll Gate incident, there was not a single video or picture of the dead bodies.

“CNN cannot pretend not to know that for anyone to act as a witness, his or her credibility must be unimpeachable. The minister also faulted another CNN star witness, Godson (Uyi), whose video was also used by the network.

It was shocking that all through its ‘investigation’, CNN did not for once mention the fact that six soldiers and 37 policemen were killed during the #EndSARS crisis, which also left 196 policemen injured, he said.

He said with the monumental destruction of government and private properties across the country, the network is fixated on the massacre that never happened. The petition also recalls: “lt is not the first time that CNN had carried an inaccurate or hoax story about Nigeria.

“In February 2007, Nigeria accused CNN of staging one of its reports from the country’s Niger Delta region, showing gunmen holding 24 Filipinos hostage. “Of course, CNN and it’s then Africa Correspondent Jeff Koinange flatly denied the charge, saying the network did not pay for any part of the report.

“Later, in an email reportedly sent to a friend, Mr Koinange was quoted as saying: “Of course we had to pay certain people to get the story… You do not get such a story without bribing.”  So much for denials! (persecondnews)

NON PDF FORMAT OF FG’S LETTER TO CNN

23 Nov. 2020

Mr. Jonathan Hawkins
VP, Communications
CNN Centre
Atlanta, Georgia
U.S,

RE: HOW A BLOODY NIGHT OF BULLETS QUASHED A YOUNG PROTEST MOVEMENT

Our attention has been drawn to an ‘investigation’ by CNN, entitled ‘How a Bloody Night of Bullets Quashed a Young Protest Movement’ and aired on 18 Nov. 2020, in which the international news organization said it had ”uncovered that Nigerian security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters” at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, Nigeria, during the #EndSARS protest.

  1. We write to put on record that the report did not just fall short
of journalistic standards, it reinforces the disinformation that is
going around on the issue, it is blatantly irresponsible and it is a
poor piece of journalistic work by a reputable international news
    organization.
  2. In the first instance, the report did not live up to the most
basic of the core principles of journalism – balance and fairness.
According to the website www.ethics.journalists.org, ”balance and
fairness are classic buzzwords of journalism ethics: In objective
journalism, stories must be balanced in the sense of attempting to
present all sides of a story. Fairness means that a journalist should
strive for accuracy and truth in reporting, and not slant a story so a
reader draws the reporter’s desired conclusion.”
  3. Rushing to air such a momentous story without presenting the
government’s side is inexcusable and indefensible. CNN said it
contacted over 100 protesters and family members, but did not speak to one official of Nigeria’s federal government. While CNN said there was no response from the army and that officials of Lagos State would not speak in view of the Judicial Panel that is investigating the matter, it did not say what effort it made to speak with any official of the federal government.
  4. The truth is that CNN did not even attempt to reach the federal
government. Nima Elbagir, who presented the report and most probably led the investigation, is conversant with the Minister of Information and Culture, who is also the Spokesman for the Federal Government of Nigeria, yet did not say that she even tried to reach the Minister. It is therefore strange, to say the least, that she would rush to air such an important ‘investigation’ report without getting the government’s side. In other words, Nima, and by extension CNN, breached the most basic of the core principles of journalism – balance and fairness.
  5. Another serious breach by CNN, in its ‘investigation’, is that
the network relied heavily on unverified footages it harvested from
social media. CNN was not present at the Lekki Toll Gate on the night of the incident. Neither its reporter nor cameraman was there, but it relied on eyewitnesses. Well, this is fraught with danger. While experts say eyewitness testimony is a potent form of evidence, it is also subject to unconscious memory distortions and biases, Unlike CNN, a reporter from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Pidgin Service, Damilola Banjo, was at the Lekki Toll Gate on the night in question, and was quoted as saying soldiers shot sporadically into the air and not at the protesters – a direct contradiction of the position taken by CNN who relied on second and third-hand information.
  6. In airing its ‘investigative’ report, CNN conveniently forgot that
on Oct. 23rd 2020, it emphatically tweeted, from its verified twitter
handle, that the military killed 38 people when it opened fire on
peaceful protesters on Tuesday, Oct. 20th 2020. Almost a month later, the same CNN – after a supposedly exhaustive investigation – is now reporting only one death from what the world was made to believe was a massacre. Is CNN not embarrassed by this sharp climbdown? Has CNN owned up to this and apologized for its faux paz?
  7. It is also interesting that while CNN obtained footage showing
when the vehicles carrying soldiers left their barracks and arrived at the Lekki Toll Gate, it could not obtain any footage showing the
bodies of those supposedly killed in the ‘massacre’. After all,
forensic ballistic experts will most likely testify that firing
military grade weapons into a crowd will not leave anyone needing a microscope to look for blood or bodies at the scene.
  8. CNN has said it stands by its story, and that ”our reporting was
carefully and meticulously researched”, This is baffling, considering
that the story lacks fairness and balance, as we have pointed out, and that the organization relied heavily on manipulated social media videos. This resort to an escapist cliche seems more like a
face-saving measure by an otherwise respectable news network caught in the blinding glare of ‘fake news and disinformation’ headlamps. Or how else does one explain the arrogant defence of an international news network that would not even respect the most basic principle of journalism?
  9. One of CNN’s star eyewitnesses in its ‘investigative’ reporting
is DJ Switch. Unknown to CNN, DJ Switch’s story on the Lekki Toll Gate shooting has changed several times. From claiming she counted 78 bodies of protesters who were supposedly killed by soldiers on the night of the Lekki Toll Gate incident, she has twice, at least, changed the casualty figure from 78 to 15 and then to 7, without a shred of evidence. CNN cannot pretend not to know that for anyone to act as a witness, his or her credibility must be unimpeachable. DJ Switch’s credibility does not meet that threshold.
  10. In one of social media videos of DJ Switch that was used by CNN (see attached link 1), the lady (DJ Switch) claimed she and some unnamed persons carried dead bodies and dropped them at the feet of the soldiers. She also claimed she spoke to their Commander before the soldiers threw the bodies into the vans. Curiously, for someone who was streaming live on Instagram during the Lekki Toll Gate incident, there was not a single video or picture of the dead bodies. Not even Godson (Uyi), another CNN star witness whose video was also used by the network, or any of the hundreds of protesters, all armed with smart phones, at the scene recorded a video or shot a picture of dead bodies being carried away by soldiers.
  11. Talking of Godson, despite claiming to have analyzed hours of
footage, it is curious that CNN conveniently left out key parts of
Godson’s 57-minute, 5-second video (see attached link 2). For example,

13 minutes, 40 seconds into the video, there were voices, in street
lingo, in the background telling Godson that the gunshots were not
from the soldiers (na boys dey shoot, that na local gun sound….it’s
boys, meaning touts and hoodlums, who are shooting. That’s local gun). Some 20 minutes,14 seconds into the video, Godson confirmed that the boys had brought out their guns and were shooting (local okah, he called it). Some 23 minutes, 14 seconds into the video, Godson said ‘wait, all these boys dey shoot’ (meaning gunshots rang out from the touts/hoodlums). CNN, in its rush to nail soldiers and tell a ‘radically different story’, conveniently left out these parts of the Godson video, which could have shown that armed hoodlums invaded the Lekki Toll Gate that night, and could have hit any of the protesters as they shot sporadically. This is clearly a ploy by the CNN reporter/presenter to manipulate viewers of its ‘investigative’ report and force them to draw the reporter’s desired conclusion! Another video showing an armed protester at the Lekki Toll Gate (see attached link 3) was apparently not among the footage reviewed by CNN!

  1. It is shocking that all through its ‘investigation’, CNN did not
for once mention the fact that six soldiers and 37 policemen were
killed during the #EndSARS crisis, which also left 196 policemen
injured, not to talk of the monumental destruction of government and private properties across the country. Instead, the network is fixated on the massacre that never happened. Are security agents not human beings too? Are they not entitled to the protection of their human rights?
  2. For the record, this is not the first time that CNN has carried
an inaccurate or hoax story about Nigeria. In February 2007, Nigeria accused CNN of staging one of its reports from the country’s Niger Delta region, showing gunmen holding 24 Filipinos hostage. Of course, CNN and its then Africa Correspondent Jeff Koinange flatly denied the charge, saying the network did not pay for any part of the report. Later, in an email reportedly sent to a friend, Mr. Koinange was quoted as saying: “Of course we had to pay certain people to get the story… You do not get such a story without bribing.” So much for denials!
  3. As a form of remediation, Nigeria’s Federal Government demands an immediate and exhaustive investigation from CNN into its ‘investigative’ report on the Lekki Toll Gate incident to determine, among others, its authenticity, whether or not it met the basic standards of journalism and also the selective use of unverified social media videos to manipulate public opinion. While it is up to CNN to accede or not, please note that the Federal Government reserves the right to take any action within its laws to prevent CNN from aggravating the #EndSARS crisis with unprofessional, irresponsible, one-sided, inciting and sensational reporting that is capable of pitching Nigerians against themselves and setting the country on fire.
  4. Please accept the assurances of my warm regards.

Lai Mohammed
Hon. Minister

Gunmen invade ABU Zaria, abduct lecturer

The gunmen, who invaded ABU, Zaria campus initially abducted the lecturer’s wife, and daughter, but later released them

A day after bandits released nine abducted students of the French Department of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, gunmen have invaded the institution and kidnapped a lecturer.

According to a statement by Auwalu Umar, the institution’s Director of Public Affairs, the incident took place at Sardauna crescent on the main campus.

Although he did not mention the name of the lecturer, an online newspaper, Saheliantimes, simply gave his name as “Dr Bako.”

The university spokesperson said the lecturer was initially kidnapped along with his wife and daughter.

He said the wife and daughter were released “when security agents chased the kidnappers into the bush.”

“At about 12:50 a.m. on Monday, 23rd November, 2020, kidnappers invaded the house of a staff member of the university on Sardauna crescent, area BZ, main campus, Samaru, Zaria. They went away with him along with his wife and daughter.

“The University security division quickly informed the operatives of the police intelligence response team that advanced to the scene following the distress call. There was an exchange of fire between the kidnappers and the mobile police operatives. When it was clear that they would be overpowered, the kidnappers ran into the bush along with the victims.

“As the police went after them up to kasuwar Da’a village bothering the university, the kidnappers then released the wife and daughter and went away with the husband. Some empty shells were recovered from the scene.

“The inspector general of police and other security agencies, as well as all relevant government establishments have been duly informed of the unfortunate incident,” the statement read.

Not new to attacks

ABU Zaria has suffered attacks by kidnappers lately.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported he abduction of nine students who were on their way to Lagos for an academic program.

Their abductors reportedly demanded N270 million as ransom. The students were later released after a ransom was paid.

Kaduna, Katsina , Zamfara and Niger States have seen have seen more frequent attacks from bandits in recent years, despite increased security presence in the area.

PREMIUM TIMES recently reported how police officers on a special assignment were kidnapped in Katsina State.

The officers were on their way to Zamfara State from Borno to carry out a special assignment before they were abducted.

They have been released, according to the police.(Premiumtimesng)

BREAKING: Activist asks judicial panel to summon CNN over Lekki shooting report

Kenechukwu Okeke, a human rights activist, has asked the Lagos state judicial panel to summon CNN over its report on the shooting at Lekki tollgate.

Okeke, who had earlier sued 50 persons for “promoting” the #EndSARS protests, accused CNN of creating tension with its report on the shooting incident.

On Wednesday, CNN published an investigation on the Lekki incident, alleging that soldiers used live rounds on protesters who had converged on Lekki tollgate on October 20.

The report had drawn the ire of the federal government who threatened to sanction CNN over “irresponsible reporting”.

Lai Mohammed, minister of information, described the alleged killings at the tollgate as “massacre without bodies”.

The army also denied the report, saying it only used blank bullets to disperse the crowd.

On Monday, Okeke said he had filed criminal proceedings against the news outlet.

“I filed a contempt petition at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry for criminal contempt summons (Form C) to issue against CNN Africa, CNN International, Messsrs. Obianuju Catherine Udeh, Stephanie Busari, Nima Elbagir, Gianluca Mezzofiore and Katie Polglase, Barbara Arvanitidis, Muhammad Darwish and Oscar Featherstone; and I shall ensure that the criminal contempt proceedings is alleged contemnors are dealt with according to law,” he said in a statement.

“Without mincing words, CNN or any other foreign media organisation must respect the laws of the Federation of Nigeria (including any regulations thereof), and also treat the population with respect, courtesy, and acting with impartiality, integrity and respect for diversity.”

Oyigbo And Cracking Of Rivers Govt Megaphones, By Casmir Igbokwe

Usually, whenever a corporate or government personality is in the eye of a storm, his spokesperson employs all sorts of fallacies to defend him and his actions. If you are not observant, he may lure you to believe that his mother is the only living virgin in the whole world.

This is the case with the media aide to the Chief of Staff, Government House, Rivers State, Mr. Jackson Owhor. He took up a space in the Daily Sun of Tuesday, November 17, 2020, to engage in what I may call leaving the ball to kick my leg. His bold title reads, “Oyigbo: Casmir Igbokwe joining IPOB to spread falsehood”. In his article, he excoriated me for using “Daily Sun to deliberately dish out false narrative about the hijack of #EndSARS protest in Rivers State by hoodlums to unleash mayhem on government institutions, the citizens and their properties.”

Six people were killed in an accident that involved a commercial bus and a truck at the Nkwelle Junction on the Nteje-Onitsha expressway in Anambra.

Mr Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the accident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Awka.

He noted that the accident which occurred at about 5:10.p.m. was caused by excessive speeding which led the bus driver to lose control of his vehicle and rammed into the truck.

“The crash involved a mini white bus belonging to a transport firm (name withheld) with registration number BGT313 XA and a white truck which did not display its registration number.

“Out of the 17 persons involved in crash, 11 male adults sustained some degree of injuries and were rushed to Iyi-Ene Hospital in Ogidi by FRSC rescue team from Nteje Unit Command.

He said the dead were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary. While wishing the injured victims a quick recovery and condoling with the families of the dead, Kumapayi urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits in order to reduce avoidable road accidents during the “Ember months.” (NAN)
