‘You’re unfit for public office’ — Akeredolu hits Bauchi gov over defence of armed herders

Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state, has criticised Bala Mohammed, his Bauchi state counterpart, for defending the use of arms by herders.

On Thursday, Mohammed said herders carry weapons because they need to protect themselves.

Describing the comments as careless and despicable, Akeredolu said his governor colleague has encouraged all other Nigerians to carry arms.

“We read with dismay, the outburst in the purported statement by the Bauchi state governor. We are persuaded to believe he didn’t make that statement,” a statement released by Donald Ojogo, the Ondo state commissioner for information and orientation, read.

“If indeed he made that statement and owns up to its contents, it then means that the Bauchi state governor has declared on behalf of the federal government, an executive order which now allows all Nigerians, herdsmen inclusive, to carry prohibited firearms like assault rifles for self-defence.

“That is exactly what the governor has done and displayed by his conduct which brazenly depicts that whether other Nigerians like it or not, herdsmen must carry AK 47 for self-defence while other non-Fulani herdsmen must remain unarmed to be perpetual victims of arms wielding bandits.

“By that statement, the governor has in one breath, agreed that indeed Fulani herdsmen carry AK 47 and at the same time encouraging all to do likewise.

“The Bauchi governor has by his conduct and attitude, ushered us into the next level on the path to anarchy. He’s not fit for public office, persons of such impecunious disposition and character is not fit for public office.

”As long as Nigeria’s consideration remains unchanged, it is still unlawful for any unauthorised persons to carry prohibited arms. The statement is most despicable, highly recommended for the dust bin of careless talks.”

In January, Akeredolu ordered herders to vacate Ondo forest reserves, saying  “bad elements” had turned the forest reserves into hideouts for keeping victims of kidnapping, negotiating for ransom and carrying out other criminal activities. (TheCable)

Ogun: Paramount ruler alleges armed herdsmen lay siege to Yewaland

The Olu Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, HRM Oba Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, has called the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari and all the security agencies to the continued laying of siege to Yewaland of Ogun State in the last few weeks by armed herdsmen and bandits who are callously killing, including literally slaughtering, and maiming his people.

The paramount ruler, in a statement, said the criminal and dangerous activities of the herdsmen had so far happened in Egua, Oja-Odan, Igan Alade, Gbokoto And Ijoun, Owode-Ketu, Ebute Igbooro, Imeko Afon and other places with reports of plans to attack major towns in Yewaland.

Read Him: “The Federal Government and the Ogun State Government are hereby implored as a matter of extreme urgency to act fast to secure the life and property of our people before it spirals out of control.

“In this situation, it is not out of place that people may resort to self help to defend themselves if the government fails to guarantee their safety as citizen of Nigeria in the face of renewed insurgency by these criminals terrorising our people with arms and dangerous weapons.

“I am issuing this press release as paramount ruler of the region and in close consultation with the entire Yewa Traditional Council, and my people in the high hope that government at both state and federal levels, together with the security agencies, would live up to expectation of their responsibility, as enshrined in the Nigeria constitution, to ensure the security of our life and property in Yewaland.

“Our people should please cooperate with the state government on various security measures already mapped out to curb the activities of these bandits in the days ahead, a stitch in time saves nine,”. (Theconclaveng)

Zulum gives N13.9 million cash, car to Yoruba doctor who worked in Boko Haram- threatened community

By Bode Olushegun

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has approved payment of N13.9 million cash and a car gift to a 65-year old medical doctor from Ogun State, who lived through Boko Haram attack to provide professional services in an insurgency-threatened Borno town.

Dr Isa Akinbode, at the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency, was living within the General Hospital in Monguno and continued to offer healthcare services to patients even when the town was faced with the most severe threats from the terrorist group.

The medical professional, who graduated from the University of Maiduguri, later joined the Borno State Civil Service where he served for 22 years before he retired in 2016 at Monguno General Hospital.

After his retirement, the doctor despite reports that he was once abducted and released by Boko Haram in Monguno, remained at the General hospital in Monguno to offer voluntary medical services.

The former Governor Kashim Shettima, during one of his visits to Monguno, was later to direct officials of the state’s ministry of health to engage the doctor as a contract staff but due to bureaucratic procedures the formalization of the process was delayed.

Akinbode’s dedication was never affected as he continued to offer services in the difficult terrain,

Luck finally smiled on him on Friday, five years later, as Governor Zulum directed that he be paid arrears of N13.9m which accrued since the day his predecessor gave an order for his contract employment.

Zulum also directed that going forward contract should be formalized for monthly entitlements, even as he presented him with a gift of Toyota Highlander.

The governor during the presentation at the Government House, Maiduguri, said: “These (people like Dr Akinbode) are the kinds of people that need to be encouraged; he lives in Monguno despite all the security problems. My predecessor had during his visit to Monguno, directed that he should be engaged on contract basis, unfortunately due to some bureaucratic procedures his reengagement has not been formalized.

“In fulfillment of the promise of my boss, I decided to reengage him on contract basis retrospectively. We are paying all his entitlements, salary in arrears. I am giving him a cheque of N13.9m. I have also approved his reengagement from 2016 being the date of his retirement.”

The governor also has approved the recruitment into the Borno State Civil Service of Dr Akinbode’s daughter, who studied Public Administration at the University of Maiduguri. (Theconclaveng)

‘FULANI HERDSMEN: GANDUJE’S CONSISTENCY, BALA’S BAD BALLAD’

It is high time we began to tell the authorities and indeed the big men within the Fulani nation that they urgently need reputation management strategy more than anything else. This may be part of some inconvenient truths they may not like to hear at this moment. Whether they like it or not, we their friends owe them a responsibility to give them a Valentine’s Day precious gift: telling them the truth that will set them free from the public relations tragedies some carelessness has attracted for them. They appear quite arrogant today from the way they shrug shoulders. The elders among them who continue to speak to the nation through the media have no idea what public relations or reputation or perception management is all about. They don’t know that image is everything. They appear too conceited to learn effective communication in conflict management. They continue to portray even killer herders within their nation as victims. They hardly talk about the scoundrels within their nation who have markedly ruined their reputation.

Sadly for them, they don’t learn much about how impurities they celebrate have become little foxes that have been spoiling their vines within this complex federation They swagger along their corridor that they are not only in office, they are also in power in the most populous black nation on earth. They are the constituted authorities everywhere we go now.

They don’t care about the law the nation’s founding fathers have put in place to enable us live peacefully together. They don’t care a hoot about federal character in our organic laws. They have grabbed powers and all the juicy positions therein. They got them so carelessly. The more their neighbours complain about unfairness and injustice, the more they grab. Now they are getting more and more careless: they want to grab lands, everywhere on the mountain, in the valley, in the night, in daytime, in good and bad times. They don’t care. They are wielding their power appurtenances in security and defence sector. They have the police. They possess the armed and even para-military forces: they are in charge of the Customs, Immigration, Correctional Centres (Prisons). They control the intelligence communities. They own the maritime forces. They are in charge of even the petroleum resources. The finance power is in their hand. They are in charge of elections management. They are in charge of public service and even the revenue service. They have seized the telecoms and digital technologies sector. They don’t share even the nation’s capital government with anyone, not to talk of the federal character commission. They also have powers over education. They are in charge of electricity transmission. They call the shot in agriculture and water resources. They are in the presidency. They are in cruise control of the judiciary too. They have the justice system on their fingertips. Even the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Tribunal are in their domain. Even the federal legislature is at their beck and call. Who can battle with these enormous powers? Who therefore has not seen why the Miyetti Allah powers and operatives have been so remarkably haughty and militant?

But this is a time to tell those who are part of the Fulani nation that they need reputation management experts at this time because their neighbours’ perception of who and what they are and where they are going is very bad.

For those who may have been their cheerleaders and public relations consultants, this is a moment of inconvenient truth. The Fulani nationals and indeed public intellectuals need to know that constant appearance on electronic media’s prime time and front pages where they portray the murderous, AK-47 wielding herdsmen as victims cannot improve the other people’s perception, in this regard. Like the ancient children of Issachar, they need to understand the times and therefore know what the Funani nation ought to do. They need to tell and admit the truth about their existential crisis at this time. How many lives did we need to lose before realising the efficacy of what Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has been advocating: ranching in the north, for instance? Did Governor Ganduje need to be in Daura to repeat his age-long sermon that herders should be prevented from migrating to the South where the image of the Fulani nation has been battered?

This module on reputation management is not an academic exercise here, after all. It should be seen as a ‘doctrine of necessity’ at this time so that we can live or part peacefully.

There is a need for a blueprint on peace building and reconciliation at this time. They need to reconcile with the people of Middle Belt they have had this ancient grudge with. First, they need public relations strategy to swallow their pride and vanity so that they can tell the nation how Fulani from all over (West) Africa have flooded Nigeria and have become terrorists and bandits. That is why they need to stop spoilers in their midst such as Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State who urgently needs some lessons on decorum and public speaking. The former FCT Minister, Bala needs to note that President Muhammadu Buhari’s mismanagement of the Fulani herders’ crisis has compounded the already battered image of the Fulani nation in Nigeria. They need more Gandujes who understand the times enough to freeze politics at this time, face the truth and tell it to the powers in Abuja.

There is no doubt that the hard truth that the Governor of Kano has been telling will attract some reprisal from the hawks that don’t understand the nexus between justice and peace in any land. They shall know the truth, the morning after what Jimmy Cliff calls ‘foolish pride’ and that truth will set them free as the ancient word tells us.

Let’s go back to the basics of reputation/ perception management context here. Reputation is generally seen as a social construct based on the opinion other people hold about a person or thing. Before the development of the Internet, consumers wanting to learn about a company or even a country or an organisation had few options. They had access to resources such as the Yellow Pages, but mostly relied on word of mouth. A company’s or country’s or organisation’s reputation depended on personal experience. A company for instance, could grow and expand based on the market’s perception of the brand. Reputation management in public relations was developed to manage the image and build the reputation of a company or individual or organisation. The concept was initially created to broaden public relations outside of media relations. Academic studies have identified it (reputation management) as a driving force behind Fortune 500 corporate public relations since the beginning of the 21st century – before Google was founded in 1998, among other giants that have expanded the scope of this social construct.

This is what the managers of the Fulani nation’s reputation need to borrow from the new media: how to shape good opinion of the people who are in the old business of cattle breeding, which is now a big business. It is not new even as money launderers now exploit the very lucrative business, (cattle rearing) to manage their loot or funds. The people who are associated with this big business need a private sector approach to manage their reputation. They should regard and treat other nationalities as markets and even customers to be satisfied, not to be killed. They need a strategic damage control mechanism in public relations management module. They need to do that pronto lest, there will be no market, sorry country with the way the Fulani cattle breeders are going. Their tower of strength, the president-in-council and commander-in-chief has not been helpful with the way he has allowed land grabbing nurtured by brigandage and impunity to govern the business that is one of the oldest in the world.

I would like to reiterate again that it is time for our leader to deal with the Fulani challenge before it is too late. He should deal with a growing allegation of Fulanisation and Islamisation agenda in the country. Perception is growing negatively on this. He needs to talk about the rumble in his house and other weightier matters of lawlessness and even imminent food insecurity that only the governors seem to be handling. If these issues are not addressed, people will be free to conclude that the president who is not capable of managing the home front well should not be expected to be able to manage a complex federation such as this.

As I was writing this last night, I was a newspaper issue of May 30, 2015 and the bold headline and riders were quite revealing: ‘Buhari: I belong to nobody: says economy is in deep trouble; pledges to free Chibok girls, tackle corruption, insecurity, fuel, power crises…’

An evaluation of the promises he made in 2015 may in fact be a compelling need to tackle the menace of Fulani herdsmen in the country. He and he alone can deal with the negative perception that he indeed belongs to the Fulani stock and that is why he has been protecting even the criminals among them.
It is therefore important to tell our leader and his men at this time that they need to invest in strategic reputation management at this time. It is serious and urgent. There have been too many public relations disasters that only Governor Ganduje is managing for them at the moment. He (Ganduje) deserves some plaudit for his wisdom and candour. Governor Nasir el-Rufai needs to be more consistent to be recognised as a Fulani brand ambassador. As I was saying here, this is not about competence of the communications managers in the presidency. It is about the image of Nigeria that President Buhari is leading at this time. They need to recognise first that reputation management is quite critical in today’s governance and leadership process even as disruptive and innovative technologies keep shaping forces of globalisation and its discontents. They don’t need the toxic outburst of Governor Bala Mohammed who should be rebuked for his bad verses at this time. How can a governor claim that all the forests in Nigeria belong to all Nigerians including even Fulani in West Africa who do not require visa to relocate to Nigeria? Besides, Bala’s claim that the herders carry AK-47 for protection is a public relations tragedy for Buhari’s presidency and that should be deftly managed before is too late.

NBA President Flays Nigerian Police, Offers Free Legal Representation To Lekki Toll Gate Protesters

Describes Arrest of Peaceful Protesters As Shocking And Unlawful, Moves To Secure Release of Protesters.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) said it had begun moves to secure the release of protesters who demonstrated at the Lekki toll gate as part of the #EndSARS Season 2 and #OccupyLekkiTollgate movement.

NBA’s President Olumide Akpata condemned what he described as the Police’s “shocking” and “unlawful actions” against protesters and demanded their immediate release.

He offered free legal representation to protesters without a lawyer.

Recall that no fewer than 23 persons, including passersby, have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos Police Command deployed to the Lekki Toll Gate.

The Federal Government and the police had warned youths who planned to protest at the Lekki tollgate to shelve the idea, a directive condemned by lawyers and rights activists.

The protesters said their action was informed by the decision of the panel allowing the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) to reopen the Lekki Toll Gate.

Speaking via a tweet on his verified Twitter handle, Akpata said: “The images & footages of the unlawful actions of the Nigerian Police at the Lekki Tollgate Lagos are truly shocking.

” The @NigBarAssoc condemns the brazen disrespect for the fundamental rights of unarmed citizens who are merely exercising their rights to peaceful protests.

“We are currently working together with members of our Association to ensure the release of those detained.

“At the moment, we understand that the detainees are spread across Panti, Adeniji and Ikeja Police Stations and that they are currently being denied access to their Lawyers.

“This is totally unacceptable and we call on the Police to immediately release them or allow them unhindered access to their lawyers.

“For protesters who do not have legal representation the @NigBarAssoc is setting up a team of volunteer lawyers who will immediately represent them.” (thenigerialawyer)

Miyetti Allah Lists Condition To Stop Herdsmen Killings

The South East chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria MACBAN) has listed some conditions that would stop farmer-herders crises.

Speaking with reporters on Saturday in Awka, Anambra State, Chairman of the association in the Southeast, Alhaji Gidado Sidikki, said the association will support any policy by the government that seeks to stop the clashes between host communities and the herdsmen.

Reacting to the decision of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), on the need for the herders to transit into modern systems of animal husbandry, Sidikki asserted that the majority of its members have no idea about mechanized grazing.

He called on the government to organize training for the cattle breeders which will replace open grazing across the country.

The MACBAN leader also commended the southeast Governors for their continued support to the association in the zone.

He, therefore urged farmers and host communities where his people were residing to always report any disagreement to the security or other relevant authorities for prompt action to avoid the destruction of lives and property.

He said, “The governor’s position is a welcome development, but for the policy to work as expected, the following provisions must be in place for peace and equity.

“They are training and re-training of Fulani herdsmen on Mechanized Grazing, provision of land for Ranching in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT and a continue Town Hall Meetings between Government, Farmers and the Herders in the affected areas.

“I believe with all these, it will bring to an end, the lingering crisis between the farmers and herder in the country“.

Lekki Toll Gate protests: many arrested, NCFront laments alleged assault

One of the arrested activists granting an interview from inside a Black Maria van

Coordinator of the #OccupyLekkiTollgate, Kunle Ajayi, is alleging that some of his people have been arrested amid reports that an unspecified number of the #OcuppyLekkiTollGate arrested by armed policemen stationed at the Lekki Toll Gate on Saturday.

One of those arrested is social media comedian, Mr. Macaroni.

One of three suspected protesters arrested in the morning were heard csreaming , ‘what have I done? Can’t I walk in my own country?”

But in a statement the National Concensus Front (NCFront) claims the latest reports received by its Situation Room have confirmed that more youth activists have been arrested at the Lekki Toll Gate by security agents, apart from those earlier arrested in the morning, and that all those arrested by the Police are still being detained under very serious inhuman conditions at both Adeniji and Ikeja Police Stations.

Some of the activists, it said, were earlier arrested are Ayoyinka, Christiana, Prince, Samuel, Waliu, Bolanle, Ganiu, Elvis, Ganiu, Jeffrey, Damilare Adenola who was speaking to a BBC Africa reporter minutes after the protesters gathered as well as a popular music artist, Debo Macaroni. They were all whisked to Adeniji Police Station and later an unknown Police Station in Ikeja after being forced inside Black Maria Vans.

NCFront said the names of the additional Youth Activists, numbering about 25 persons, arrested and detained by the Police will be released later.

It said reports from its agents deployed to monitor the situation on the field and some viral videos circulating the social media have it that those arrested are currently being molested and assaulted in their incarceration as human rights and other public interest lawyers were being prevented by the police from gaining access to them.

“Consequently, NCFront of Leaders of Conscience in Nigeria hereby wish to reaffirm that security agents should exercise civility, restraint and decorum in dealing with the Youth Activists as they have not violated any known extant laws of Nigeria by gathering peacefully to express their concerns about government policies inimical to their wellbeing

“Moreover, every Peaceful Protest and Assembly in Nigeria is a constitutional right of every Nigerian Citizen, therefore arresting and detaining the Youth Activists and Peaceful Protesters is illegal and a clear violation of their human rights. It will however be disastrous for the country, if security agents in their overzealousness and panic turn this planned peaceful Assembly of the Nigerian Youths to another riot of irate mob as done last time.

“In the light of the foregoing, the NCFront wishes to demands for the unconditional release of all those arrested and being currently being detained by the Police within the next 24 hours or we are compelled to mobilise all citizens of conscience nationwide to troop out to help demand for their release,” NCFront added. Adegboruwa threatens to quit #EndSARS Judicial Panel, says ‘Arrest, detention, dehumanisation of protesters at Lekki Toll Gate unacceptable’

My heart is very heavy. I’m saddened and devastated. My soul is sorely troubled at this time.

For decades before the advent of this administration, Nigerians have risked their lives, liberties, their times and their energies, their resources, to win back this country on the side of democracy and good government, from military dictatorship. Some have paid the supreme price with their lives.

I have been monitoring events at the Lekki Toll Gate since morning, and I am totally overwhelmed with the images, videos and sundry evidence of police brutality of armless civilians, who ventured to protest at the Toll Gate. In one particular video, I saw citizens of Nigeria being dehumanized, striped half naked and cramped together in a rickety bus. This is totally unacceptable.

While we are yet to come to terms with the events of October 20, 2020, it becomes worrisome that the security agencies have not learnt any positive lesson from those occurrences. I commend the protesters for their peaceful conduct.

I cannot in good conscience continue to sit at any Panel of Inquiry to heal wounds and end police brutality, when fresh assaults are being perpetrated with impunity. Consequently, I am presently consulting with my constituency within the civil society, as to my continued participation in the EndSARS Judicial Panel.

I hereby demand the immediate release of all those arrested in connection with the peaceful protest at the Lekki Toll Gate today. On no account should anything happen to any of them while in the custody of the police.

I appeal for calm on all sides, in order not to escalate the worsening security situation across the land. I cannot fail to point out the fact that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is a product of protest and civil disobedience. Let history vindicate the just.

Donald Trump acquitted on charge of inciting US Capitol riot – By Steve Chaggaris

Former US President Donald Trump has been acquitted on a charge of “incitement of insurrection” in relation to the January 6 riot at the United States Capitol.

After a five-day impeachment trial in the US Senate, the vote was largely split along party lines with 57 lawmakers voting to convict and 43 voting to acquit.

That fell short of the two-thirds Democrats needed to convict Trump, who is the only US president to ever be impeached twice while in office.

Notably, however, seven Republican senators voted to convict the former president, the largest number of conviction votes from senators in president’s own party for impeachment in US history.

This was Trump’s second impeachment trial, the only time a president has been through this process twice. Trump’s first impeachment trial, which took place in February 2020, ended in an acquittal of charges that he tried to pressure Ukraine to investigate now-President Joe Biden.

The second trial’s outcome was not a surprise as the bar to convict would have required a significant bipartisan vote at a time when the US is extremely partisan – more deeply polarised politically than it has been in decades.

“This trial wasn’t about choosing country over party, even not that this was about choosing country over Donald Trump and 43 Republican members chose Trump. They chose Trump,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said following the vote.

Trump, for his part, released a statement calling the trial “yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country.”

“No president has ever gone through anything like it,” Trump added.

Democrats had hoped that Republicans, who had experienced the riot first-hand and were deliberating at the scene of the crime, would cause them to put politics aside and vote for conviction.

While the vote reflects the deep divisions between Republicans and Democrats, it also magnifies the deep divisions within the GOP between pro-Trump lawmakers and those that feel he should be held accountable.

The arguments

House Democratic impeachment managers framed their argument around the charge that Trump laid the groundwork for violence through his baseless insistence that the presidential election results were fraudulent. They laid out in detail evidence they argued showed he told the mob to come to Washington, DC on January 6, gave them their marching orders and then refrained from calling off the rioters after the violence started.

The Democrats played graphic videos of rioters storming the Capitol mixed with Trump’s remarks he made and tweets he sent throughout. Over the course of two days, Democrats argued that it was plainly obvious that Trump incited the events that transpired on January 6.

“It’s now clear beyond doubt that Trump supported the actions of the mob and so he must be convicted. It’s that simple,” lead House impeachment manager Jamie Raskin said during closing arguments on Saturday.

Trump’s defence team argued his speech was not “incitement” and was allowable under constitutional free-speech protections.

“To claim that the president in any way wished, desired or encouraged lawless or violent behaviour is a preposterous and monstrous lie,” said Michael van der Veen, one of Trump’s lawyers, on Friday.

Trump’s defence lawyers also argued that the Democrats’ presentation was misleading, filled with “doctored evidence” and called the trial “political theatre” driven by Democrats who have had it out for Trump since he announced his first presidential campaign six years ago.

“Since my client stepped in, they have been possessed overwhelming zeal to vanquish an independent-minded outsider … and to shame, demean, silence and demonize his supporters,” van der Veen said during his closing arguments on Saturday.

Speedy trial

Lawmakers from both parties had hoped for a quick trial, and they received their wish. Five days is the fastest presidential impeachment trial, by far, in US history.

Republicans wanted to move on from having to answer questions about Trump’s behaviour surrounding the riot and Democrats, including President Joe Biden want to move on to other business, such as the confirmation of senior Biden administration officials and a $1.9 trillion coronavirus aid package.

The trial was almost prolonged after Republican Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler, who released a statement late on Friday recounting her account of a mid-riot conversation between Trump and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy in which McCarthy was heard pleading with the president to call off the rioters.

Herrera Beutler on Friday night urged “the patriots” who were with Trump during this call to come forward and tell their stories.

That request led to the Senate voting on Saturday to call witnesses, threatening to slow down the trial for days or even weeks. Ultimately, there was an agreement to enter her statement as evidence and not call any witnesses.

Republican fissures

Trump remains popular among conservative voters, and for fear of alienating them or the former president, most of the Republican senators voted against conviction.

Those seven Republican senators – Senators Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney, Ben Sasse, and Pat Toomey – who voted to convict have set themselves up to face the same massive criticism as the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach him last month.

The Friday statement from Herrera Beutler, who was one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach, set off some of Trump’s most ardent supporters.

Pro-Trump Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene threatened that Trump supporters are taking note of Hererra Buetler’s actions.

“First voting to impeach innocent President Trump, then yapping to the press and throwing @GOPLeader under the bus,” she tweeted.

“The Trump loyal 75 million are watching,” Greene added.
